Painted rose
 

I was demonstrating at my groups quilt display today. I only managed to get one rose done. Then I brought it home and quilted it tonight. I wanted the effect of the feathers being behind the rose. And also I was trying a new batting. It will be round when it is finished. I have been taking Cindy Needham's class, Design It Quilt it. I love the feathers behind an image or another motif. I painted the rose with doing that in mind.

What did you paint it with, that is a really neat technique, did you paint first or quilt first.

I paint first with fabric paints, acrylic. You can get them at JoAnns, Michaels, etc. The painting washes well after it has cured. That takes 10 days for the least amount of time. I have no problem with that. By the time I get a quilt done it sure is more than 10 days. I have painted shirts where the painting outlasted the shirt.

Deb, that is a work of art. May I ask the name of the batting? Also, it looks as if it has more loft than most batting. I used the extra high loft when I hand quilted. Now when I send one out to be longarmed it is like two layers of fabric sewn together, you can see through it. I am looking for a more puffy batting.

Beautiful, rose, beautiful quilting.

That's simply gorgeous Deb! I love how you painted it. I just finished a wholecloth rose myself and even bought the Tsukineko inks to color it in, but chickened out after I quilted it lol! So, I left it white and added some crystals and called it good. I'll be sure to try the inking next time after seeing how effective it was for you. Your quilting is lovely as well.
I would post a pic of mine but it's been so long since I've posted I don't remember how! Maybe later. Right now I'll just enjoy yours over and over. :)

That painted rose is just beautiful Deb! And the feather looks great behind it too. I just love the tiny circle fill you did on the background of the center.
