I call this Apple Swirls because both prints have apple slices and apple cores. Forgot the name of this pattern.

Apples Swirls is a great name. I can smell the cinnamon.

Was that the French Twist pattern? I think it was in a Quilter's Newsletter magazine years ago.

It was appliqued not pieced, using freezer paper templates.

(and I see the French Twist name is also used for mini twister quilts)

Here's another variation:
http://www.ddcountryquilts.com/quilts/french-twist.htm
http://barbarabrackman.blogspot.com/...ern-swirl.html

I think it was by a national quilt teacher who used fabrics that she had bought on a trip to France, hence the name of the quilt. I'm drawing a total blank on the quiltmaker's name.

Ah, Susan Briscoe to the rescue with her comments on the brackman blog:

Patricia Logan wrote a pattern using a version of the Swirl block, calling the quilt "French Twist", using up French fabrics bought on a tour to France with Yvonne Porcella. her swirl isn't set in a circle though. It was in the April 2004 issue of "Quilter's Newsletter Magazine" (p 56 & 57)

That's a marvelous pattern. Wish you had the name of it, although I probably would never attempt it myself. Great job, it's beautiful.

Actually this quilt was quite easy. It's from an old book entitled "All Quilt Blocks Are Not Square" by Debra Wagner. This quilt is called Candy Swirl. Believe it or not, there is only 1 pattern piece (using a template) and only 4 pieces in each block. None of my blocks turned out square or anywhere close to the same size -- but you get to square them up at the end.

You can still find the book online -- I bought mine (used) for $5.

About a year and a half ago another QB member posted a quilt made with this pattern. I tracked down the designer and she only taught it in classes (West coast) but recommended I get the "Great American Quilts" book from 2001 (I think ) that the pattern was in there from another quilter. So I now have the pattern. It is all done via an applique method, no peicing, no curved seams but prepared applique using the freezer paper method as MTS said. I have started to prepare pieces for it but applique is not one of my favorite things to do so I think it will be a while before I make it. Though I will make it because I just love the finished quilt so much.

I've never seen it done in applique - sounds interesting. Like I said before, this one is pieced, but there is only 1 piece in the entire quilt. Since the curves are so gentle, it really isn't hard to piece and you have a chance to square things up after all the piecing.

What a great quilt. Love the fabric and colors.

Yooper32 07-25-2011 04:26 AM

Mmmmmmm! Doesn't that just look like fun. I just read your disclaimer, but it still looks pretty complicated to me. Sign me "chicken". Sure made a very interesting and pretty quilt.

meanmom 07-25-2011 04:44 AM

I have loved all the quilts you have posted. They are different which I love. Thanks for the inspiration. I just ordered the book from the library.

Really?!?! That is good news to me. I much prefer peicing over applique and am not afraid of curves. Currently working on an adaptatin of NYB and that has two double curved pieces in it. I bet I can use the template that I have to piece it then as it does have the seam allowance already added for turning under. I would much rather just cut and piece than prep all those applique pieces - all that pressing under and gluing down takes a really long time. The pattern is as you describe, only 4 units and also gives instructions of squaring up the block after it is put together.

I will give it a shot on a sample block. I may just get this thing done sooner then I thought. Thanks so much for your feedback on it.

Hobbyhorse1027 07-25-2011 04:56 AM

Very fancy. I've never seen that block before.
