After teaching 6th gr. math for almost 30 yrs., some of the most rewarding lessons my students learned were not things from their textbooks...I taught them how to make alot of projects that used their math lessons; then we held a Christmas craft fair to sell those projects. After the craft fair, I loaded alot of volunteer students into my van to buy groceries with the money were made. Another group of volunteer students helped to make up Christmas food baskets for needy families in our school district. Even now, almost 10 yrs. after I retired, I often see some of my former students...our craft fair and Christmas food baskets are one of the things they remembered most from being one of my students....it's great to hear from others who are teaching more than textbook lessons...

You look like you are having fun. Learning can be fun and you are doing a great job with the children.
|
Learning can be enjoying when you don't REALIZE that is what you are doing. Thank you for taking the time and having the patience with our children. May GOD continue to bless you.
|
Thanks, I have had so many generous offers...

Hats off to you!!! What a wonderful program...it's a win/win!
|
This is the sort of "Good News" that needs to be in the media headlines to show what the "Youth of Today" is all about, instead of all the negative stuff we generally read about. Probably why you got such a big turn - out as well, as they basically want to do good things. Well done to all of you.

What a great program! Thanks for sharing it.

I agree with what all the others before me have said. You are doing a wonderful thing helping the kids learn how to sew and then to give to others. They look like the are really enjoying themselves. You are a positive influence in their lives and they will always remember you for the time and patience you have shown them. Thank you so much for sharing your project with us, it does us all good to be reminded there is goodness out there.

What a wonderful project! It is a win-win situation. Bless you for teaching these kids to do this!
|
What a great thing you are doing- your kids get the benefit of learning how to make something, how it feels to make something for someone else, plus the recipient gets the finished project!
|
How gorgeous these kids are and they look very happy and proud of themselves as they should be.

One of the classes I taught for about 3 years at a small private school made a variety of items for charity. We called the calss "Service Projects." It was an elective. The last year I taught the class my students (three girls -- one was there only one day each week) made 200 small quilts that were donated to pregnancy centers, nursing homes, etc. No, I didn't make a typo. They really did make 200 quilts!!! They set themselves a goal of 200 for the year. They simply cut out two panels of fabric, sandwiched them together, stitched around the edges leaving an opening, and then turned them right side out. They would spend one or two days simply cutting out the quilts. They had quite the little assembly line going! Lots of babies, toddlers and seniors received those quilts, and I'm sure they really appreciated them. The girls felt so honored to be able to make them. Keep up the good work! Your students are amazing! This is an awesome project! I know how this can give confidence to students. And those who may not excel at other activities, can do very good work. I volunteered at my elementary school after retirement working with fifth graders. The first and second years, we did red embroidery and the third year, we did crayon design. The embroidery blocks were made into quilts and with the crayon projects we made pillows. |
I found so much joy in looking at that. Thank you
