Hi, For 3 years I have been quilting with the high school kids at school..they earn community hours and help me make quilts and pillows, etc for charity...even the boys love it and they are very proud when they accomplish a project...we get limited funds from different programs and I also get some donations from fabric stores, etc...
We did it... Fleece Pillows |

Awww thank you for sharing these pictures!
How wonderful that these students choose to help you with these items :D:D:D |
Congratulations to all of you for an outstanding job!!!!!
Thanks, as you can see there is plenty of goofing around while they work...will add a few more pics as I go

How fun is that? Kids are always good at amazing us, aren't they. It's great that they are interested in sewing and creating things for someone else. I'm sure some of the brat...um...kids that aren't participating don't think it's all that cool!
Well done to all of you.

As a teacher I thank you for what you are doing!! It is such an important thing. It instills confidence in these children and gives them a chance to reach out to the community. Do they ever get the chance to go with you when you donate the projects? I'm sure they would find that so satisfying and would inspire them to do even more!
One of the classes I taught for about 3 years at a small private school made a variety of items for charity. We called the calss "Service Projects." It was an elective. The last year I taught the class my students (three girls -- one was there only one day each week) made 200 small quilts that were donated to pregnancy centers, nursing homes, etc. No, I didn't make a typo. They really did make 200 quilts!!! They set themselves a goal of 200 for the year. They simply cut out two panels of fabric, sandwiched them together, stitched around the edges leaving an opening, and then turned them right side out. They would spend one or two days simply cutting out the quilts. They had quite the little assembly line going! Lots of babies, toddlers and seniors received those quilts, and I'm sure they really appreciated them. The girls felt so honored to be able to make them. Keep up the good work! Your students are amazing! |

It's so good to see some sewing being done in a school! I think that's something that has gone by the wayside, which is really sad.
And now their moms will be able be to say, "Do it yourself!" when the kid needs a button sewn on or a seam repaired. :O) It's a win/win situation. :O) |

what a happy thread! I love soft and comfy things and teaching is awesome isn't it? I have a little 7 year old sponge (dgd) that makes me smile too. Thanks for sharing!

Wonderful!! This is the best news I have read today. Thank you for all the time you are spending with these children. May you be blessed as the children will be blessed. And is that a Crucifix on the wall? I wish we were allowed to hang one in our schools.

What you are and have done is such a blessing. Love those smiling faces. Warms my heart and this post has given me smiles and lots of pleasure.
They all look so proud as they should.
I think this is great, thank you for sharing the Peace By Piece Quilting Club with us.
Great job with the kids! May God Bless all of you. I also like the idea of turning the quilt inside out. Got to try that one!
What a great thing! Not only do the kids find a sense of self worth and accomplishment, but of giving too! Bless you for doing this!
Do you have FreeCycle where you are? If so, maybe you can get donations of more fabric from them. And service clubs, male and female, they might help some.
There should be regular articles in your local newspaper that might ask for fabric to be given to the school. And since it is a Church school, how about an article every now and then in the Church bulletin? |
looks like some proud and happy students.
What a GREAT way to spread smiles!!! Good Job!!!
Wonderful. You are teaching sewing plus giving. These are the things that many kids miss at home.
Keep up the good work, you are making a difference in someone's life |
Great job of you and the students! They'll make FINE ADULTS real soon!
Wonderful! I'm not a teacher but was thinking exactly what pab said- instilling confidence. I'm a Mom of 3 boys and they all learned to sew. They made things and had a lot of fun as little boys but the main thing for me was learning and doing things together too. In fact, at least 2 of them made projects at school involving sewing and they knew what to do!
Your pics are just awesome!! |
I love a great smile of accomplishment. I am always amazed by what young people can and will do given the opportunity. Food does help because at that age they can eat every hour on the hour for an hour. :-)
Now you can tell your students they are internationally recognized for their work. |
good for you being a positive influence in young children/adult lives!!!! You are making a difference!
That is totally awesome! I'm so glad you're able to get the boys involved. It's good for all of them to do something good for somebody else, and they can have fun while they're doing it!
Thank you for sharing and what you are doing. I see lots of happy faces.
Kudos....to you and them!
Good job!!!
HOW WONDERFUL!!!!
What a great idea. If I had extra fabric, would you want it? If so, what address should I mail it to? I need to clean out my stash as I need the room. You can email me with the answer if that is easiest.
PM me your address and I will donate some fabric. I need to clean a little, LOL.
ooops you are in Canada.... will that cause shipping problems. if so, I can send it my my Canada friend when she goes back in the spring. Her Daughter is in Brampton.
Wonderful!!! Best news I have seen today. Congratulations on a job well done
Good for you!!! And it looks like they're really enjoying it!! Keep up the good work.
what a wonderful project. I love to sew and am hopeful that my granddaughter will want to learn. My daughter doesn't, keep up the good work.
My brother teaches at the local Catholic school, but it's math and sewing. We are Catholics and I make quilts for them to raffle off.... |
