Peacocky quilt - times 2 - done

A co-worker first asked me to make a quilt for her Army son. It was my first commission, but this is what I made:

She loved it and decided to get one for each of her three adult children for Christmas so I made #2 after showing her a set of batik fat quarters I had on hand. Picture here: http://www.quiltingboard.com/picture...ml#post5553477

The third one got changed - from earth tones to PEACOCK colors! Quite a change! Here are two versions of that idea. I'll show them to her tomorrow and let her choose one. I don't care which one she chooses - I'll use the other for something or other.

The lighter version has feathers quilted in the solid purple blocks. It's backed in flannel with no batting. It's a 5-yard pattern that came with some bundle I purchased a while back. It's called "Basket Weave". The fabrics are a miscellaneous bunch I picked up on sale - two were $4/yd!

The brighter version is a fat quarter bundle from Connecting Threads. The line is called "Tulane" and the pattern is "Cheaper By the Dozen".

I'll be very curious to see which direction she goes. And ... this is it for commissions for me. If I have fabric on hand that someone wants made in my choice of pattern - okay. Or if I make one and someone wants to buy it - okay. But no more - earth tones turn to peacocks and no good direction in what that means - no more no way no how!

I'm charging twice the cost of the materials, but I'm a bargain hunter, didn't spend much for fabric, and am thinking that may not be enough. These are all simple patterns - easy to make, but they still take time. The quilting is mostly very basic meandering. The feather on the purple blocks is my first attempt at that style.

They are both very nice.

I think she will be happy with either one of those or both. They are beautiful!

I like boith of your quilts, but the second one really caught my eye as I was looking at that fabric from Connecting Threads myself. You used it beautifully.

I like them both, but really love the one with purple.

They are both beautiful but the second one is amazing. You should be very proud of both. I remember your post about her changing her mind from earth tone colors.

Wow, they look great. A comment on the 'twice the cost of the materials'. I always use the original retail price in this calculation, not what I paid! remember to include thread.

Well, she took the second one - and was thrilled with it. She loved them both, but when I flipped to show the backing she was sold on the brighter one - said it looked like her daughter. So ... done! Now back to my own projects!

Thanks for the "Twice the price of retail" idea. I'm just not comfortable yet charging what I think they are "worth". These easy, easy patterns go together so quickly and my FMQ is so basic. But ... as I get better and more confident - I'll hike that price up to a more reasonable level.

very nice!!!!

I'm so thankful you shared all of this with the board. You gave me the inspiration and thought of making my son a special quilt if/when he's deployed once again. I never thought of sending him a quilt on his first tour....was too concerned about him getting it...I have the quilt already made and ready, just in case...

I like the second the best. Could it be the first is out of focus?

Mariposa 10-03-2012 08:49 AM

Both are very nice!

They are both beautiful quilts. I am sure she will enjoy them. I can understand what you are saying about commission work.

First, I like the second one. Don't know why as both are beautiful. Second, I love the quilt you did for the soldier.

Both are very pretty, but I love the soft colors of the first quilt. It just looks so relaxing.
