Performance anxiety conquered!

1 Attachment(s)
Lol. I have had FMQ performance anxiety for months....just couldn't make myself lower those feed dogs! This is a 72". Long table runner for DS and family....I just did a loopy pattern and it's no where close to perfect, but I now have the courage to try an actual quilt! I think I need gloves- I have some weakness in my right hand and I had trouble guiding the fabric. Guess what-the quilting police didn't show up! ;). Question.... I used brown thread on the bobbin to blend with the backing fabric. There are places on the top where a little pop of brown shows-is that just from moving the fabric too quickly, or is it a tension issue? Thanks for the lovely inspiration you all post!

Beautiful table runner. Great quilting job.

very unique' ,looks great

craftynell 09-27-2013 12:36 PM

Very nice table runner. I love it.

Tartan 09-27-2013 12:41 PM

Well done! You probably needed a little less tension on your top thread but a perfectly balanced stitch for FMQ is tough. I usually just use the same colour in the bobbin as the spool. The gloves help tremendously! My favourites are Machingers.

QuiltnNan 09-27-2013 12:45 PM

nicely done... if you just a few pokies, they may disappear in the wash. if you have a lot, do as tartan suggested

Diane007 09-27-2013 01:14 PM

nice table runner

DogHouseMom 09-27-2013 03:24 PM

If I see just one or two places where the top or bottom thread is showing on the opposite side I blame the operator (me), not the tension. Moving the sandwich too fast for the machine.

Lovely topper!

jillmc 09-27-2013 04:14 PM

Thanks for the tips-quiltnnan was right-after washing it and drying, the thread pops have mostly disappeared! Yay!

mighty 09-27-2013 04:43 PM

Great job!

Lilrain 09-27-2013 05:44 PM

Yay! You have conquered it

GailG 09-27-2013 05:44 PM

Awesome! I wish I could work up enough courage to try FMQ.

About the gloves. They do make a difference. I use them for SITD and crosshatching. I don't have actual quilting gloves, but I had a pair of CLEAN ladies' gardeners' gloves with the little plastic dots. They work well.

DebraK 09-27-2013 05:51 PM

that looks great!

Toni-in-Texas 09-27-2013 06:22 PM

Great job. I tried FMQ one time and it was a disaster. Haven't tried it in several years. Maybe one day. :-)

AngeliaNR 09-27-2013 06:22 PM

Good for you! I have the same anxiety. :)

I made the pattern up based on one I found when I googled pumpkin table runner. There is a pattern available to purchase-it had smaller squares and no borders. Basically, sew patches together then cut out pumpkin shape with the squares on point.....easy!

jillmc 09-28-2013 05:57 AM

Forgot to add-I simply appliqued the pumpkins by machine using a blanket stitch and free handed a twirly little vine at the top after adding stem and leaf! :)

WTxRed 09-28-2013 10:04 AM

this is really really cute!

I agree with Tartan. I use same thread in both bobbin and top. I also use Bottom Line which seems to disappear in the fabric once washed. And I couldn't FMQ without my Machingers, either. Kudos for making a beautiful quilt and great FMQing!

justflyingin 09-28-2013 11:34 AM

The gloves really do help hang onto the quilt better. And Leah Day suggested always using the same color in the top and bottom to alleviate that problem. I don't always, but I can see the advantages of it.

I'm no expert (did my first FMQ last summer) but enjoy it. I'm starting to learn to enjoy doing it and hopefully some day I'll actually get "good". :) I long to be able to try some flowers and something other than just stippling. I found myself almost doing something like that the other day, but not quite. I still don't have the control I need yet--but just keep practicing, mostly on charity quilts. I feel like it's a perfect place to learn to be "good" at this thing called FMQ.

And I think your table runner looks really nice!

Joy Higdon 09-28-2013 11:41 AM

GOOD FOR YOU!!!! Great job. Please post your next quilt.

dilyn 09-28-2013 04:19 PM

Oh, you are gonna get seeeww addicted to FMQ! What you did looks lovely (Nice table runner, buy the way) and, trust me, you won't be able to stop!

solstice3 09-29-2013 03:41 AM

What a beautiful runner! Where did you find the pattern?

kyquiltlover1942 09-29-2013 04:55 AM

Instead of gloves, I tried two VERY large erasers I got from the dollar tree. I think I like them better. I was only doing a baby size quilt, but if I do any more on my SW, I think I will keep on using them.

klgls 09-29-2013 05:44 AM

I purchased the Machingers gloves and the SewSlip sheet and they have made a tremendous difference in my FMQ. Wish I had purchased them when I started FMQ. Especially helpful when quilting bigger quilts! Yours looks great by the way!

cpcarolyn 09-29-2013 06:22 AM

Great table runner.

twinkie 09-29-2013 06:45 AM

I think you did just great. Can't wait to see the next project.

Cecelia363 09-29-2013 07:41 AM

Congratulations, your runner is beautiful! I so get the feeling of accomplishment when facing the challenge of FMQ, I am still worried about ruining my beautiful pieced top with bad quilting, but it always turns out just fine. I use gloves I found at an auto parts store, they are very stretchy fabric with the palms and fingers coated with a rubbery coating. Excellent fit and the snug wrist band gives soothing support and my hands feel moisturized when I remove them.
