Here is a picture of our Group tutorial result on paper piecing. I really enjoyed this one ...WHEN.... I got the hang of it. The penny didnīt drop at first but then got the hang of the concept. Have decided to make this the centre of my next quilt (donīt laugh just another WIP, I have 2 others at the mo).

Thinking on putting flying geese as the next border

I added a border, and am attempting some time this week to have a bash at free hand quilting.....now that should be fun.

This is really beautiful. I must confess, the thought of paper piecing gives me the hives. I've looked and looked at the instructions, and I just DO NOT understand what they are talking about.

I love your piece, just so pretty. Your border is perfect, your points are marvelous, and I think flying geese would be just the ticket. Are you going to make them the assorted colors of the star?

Whooooooo hooooooo!!!!!!!!! Another paper-piecer has been born!!!!! lol Love how you said when the penny dropped lol And absolutely unbelievable, your quilt square is GORGEOUS! :)

Izy 06-28-2008 12:46 AM

It looks even better in real life folks...the colours are simply 'divine'!!!

Elle are you gonna 'free-motion' quilt, is that what you mean??? I hope you get the hang of it, as it is great fun and soooo quick!!!

Look forward to seeing it finished....I won't be at class on tuesday as I have got family coming over next week...lots of jobs to do, you know how it is!!! (Still got some time for my friends on here, and of course abit of sewing too, I have been doing some lovely little seven inch blocks that Cathy M sent over to me, they were pre-cut, but sadly some of the fabric was missing SO I just invented another block to compliment the first one, it will be 12 blocks of about 7.5"!!

Yes the geese are going to echo the colours, think that might work. Thanks for your lovely comments. But its the paper piece tecnique that gives you such great points. Elle

Yes Izy, You have got the hang of me and my names for different quilting, I meant free-motion quilting. Going to have a go at that. Rachel showed me on Tuesday and it looked so easy when she did it, but then practice is the secret.

Our Group leader is so patient and she showed me how she practiced on two pieces of FELT. Instead of wasting your precious batting and material and she just kept going over the felt with different coloured thread. Good tip for you all to help you I hope. Place the felt together to get 2 thicknesses and off you go

Quiltinsolitude 06-28-2008 05:01 AM

Elle, just gorgeous!!!

jacquemoe 06-28-2008 05:10 AM

Absolutely beautiful. Very nice job.

Butterflyspain 06-28-2008 05:30 AM

My thanks to everyone for their kind comments. I know everyone shies away from foundation piecing because it seems too difficult. I for one at the start was very confused and yes I think you need someone to show you the ropes so to speak, but it is just sooooo worth while because the results are so professional (for an amateur like myself).

ccbear66 06-28-2008 05:57 AM

BEAUTIFUL :!: :!:
I have not tried the pp thing yet but I really want to but I'm just afraid that it won't come out. One of these days I will work up the courage.

zyxquilts 06-28-2008 05:59 AM

Gorgeous block Elle! Paper piecing is one of those techniques that when you finally 'get it' ....zoom! You're off & running!! But you only have TWO other UFOs? Oh my! I can see at least 10 from where I'm sitting here! LOL

Moonpi 06-28-2008 06:00 AM

That is beautiful!

mgshaw 06-28-2008 07:30 AM

Butterflyspain 06-28-2008 08:16 AM

OMG you are all so kind. You have got to try this girls. Wish I lived nearer and I could give you a TUTE. Thinks I have to buy a ticket to Dallas where my friend lives. How many of you guys can get there :?: :?: :?:

Melisa (mgshaw) I think its called the Friendship Star, someone has borrowed my pattern envelope and its in there but will confirm later.

Elle

Quiltinsolitude 06-28-2008 08:39 AM

There was a design recently in a quilt magazine that I sooooo wanted to do - so I got out some scraps and followed the directions and all - it's true that the points come out beautifully, but the process is not for me! Soooo much wasted fabric, and in the back of my miserly little mind is the thought that if paper dulls my scissors, what is it doing to my needle??? (like there will never be another needle, right?)

I will continue, however, to admire the results and encourage those of you who are loving the process! :D

bj 06-28-2008 08:43 AM

That is just gorgeous. Our quilt shop is offering a pp workshop. Now, I must sign up. Love yours.

Elle,
I can be in Dallas in 8 hours, I'll be waiting too!

That's not the friendship star that I use for my quilts, but could be a variation.

Elle - Hope you don't mind me muscling in here...but I wanted to share a tip on how to paper piece and NOT waste fabric!!

1. Lay fabric for piece one down wrong side up.
2. Lay the pattern over the top, ensuring there is adequate fabric extending beyond all edges by at least 1/4"
3. Place a ruler along the first side, then flip the pattern up and over the ruler being careful not to move it, exposing the fabric.
4. Butt up tight against the ruler a second 1/4" 'add-on' ruler - then draw your line. (This is your seam allowance)
5. Very carefully lay the pattern back down.
6. Now repeat on each side of Piece one.

You now have an identical copy of the pattern but with 1/4" seam allowance added.

Repeat with each part of the foundation pattern.
If you layer up your fabric you can cut multiples at the same time, as alot of patterns are symetrical and usually are made up of four identical blocks, as Elle's is. :D

If you take your time at this stage - then all you have to do is match up the edges of the fabric, making sure if it is on the diagonal that you have it centred correctly!!

Tah dah - Now I figured that out as I am very frugal with fabric!!!!
Plus found it so much easier in placing the fabric in the correct position :D

Is that as clear as mud...if you would like a photo tute....then just shout!!!!  ...........I can already hear you folks tee hee!!!!

ccbear66 06-28-2008 11:13 AM

OK I'M SHOUTING.........I would love to have a photo tute. I've always wanted to try pp but am scared.

I love to paper piece, I am glad you tried it. My first attempt was not as much fun until I had a friend help me and told me about using muslin insteade of paper for the pattern. Now I use the muslin backing almost all the time but do use the paper when I am making the greeting cards or postcards.

Quiltinsolitude 06-28-2008 02:24 PM

Thanks, Izy - that made more sense than the magazine instructions I followed, which called for cutting all these rectangles and trimming the excess after sewing . . .which left a whole lot of itty-bitty oddly shaped triangles that I would never have the patience to make into anything except maybe stuffing for the cat bed

I think the flight to Dallas is only a couple of hours. When do we meet? I have a free companion ticket, I'll bring my sister, she loves to quilt too.

Knot Sew 06-28-2008 02:32 PM

I have read and listened to paper piecing directions.......need the lesson..you did a great job......you'll be able to do such pretty stuff :D

tlrnhi 06-28-2008 05:52 PM

Elle...that is really pretty, but I didn't expect anything less from you. Everything I have seen you do is very pretty.

Purple....try a few of the EASY blocks in PP. You'll get the hang of it. It's actually pretty easy. Like I say....if I can do it, ANYONE can!

ceannastahr 06-28-2008 06:36 PM

That is so pretty I'm still having trouble with pp but getting better. Love to try that pattern

Thats a good idea. That was the only thing that I didnīt like having to pull the paper off the back when I had made it. You donīt have to take the paper off if you are making a wall hanging, but you do if like me you want to make a quilt.

Wow that would be really lovely to meet all you gals :D . If only, if only.
Not only is the Euro not doing well against the Pound but the good old Government has decided in their wisdom to abolish the lowest tax rate, which now means everyone has to pay 20% tax now instead of 10% tax, :( so on my measily pension they now take off 52.50 GBP where it used to be 32.50. Ooooops sorry on my high horse again.

Back to business. :D ...

Butterflyspain 06-28-2008 11:50 PM

Terri, Thank you. Think I will have to a do a photo Tute.
By the time I save up enough to come out to Dallas I will be old and grey.......whats the matter with me..... all I can say good job I can dye my hair
And everything is going south.....who was it said "grow old gracefully" how the heck can you do that when everything is stacked against you.

No, joking apart I am healthy and I thank the Lord for that.

:D

sewnsewer2 06-29-2008 12:39 AM
