I would love to see you all post some pictures as you begin your process of choosing and making the Quilt Blocks for this Swap.

Show us your fabric choices and your colors!!

Anything related to the thinking process and the sewing of your Quilt Block would be terrific!

But of course we want all those gorgeous pictures of the finished quilt blocks too!!

Hope you all have fun making these!!

Thanks, Rhonda, for giving us a place to share photos. This is my inspiration fabric. I don't have enough of it to use for sashing, but I like the way these colors play and hope my partners will use them for my blocks.

beige, butterscotch, caramel, black

Jupiter - that is awesome fabric! Will have to check my stash to see what will work with it. Pretty sure I have ones that will coordinate (one a bit lighter than the butterscotch and one maybe more towards rust than the caramel). Will post pictures later so you can see what you think.

To Marcias -

Here is the picture of the spring blender colors I have to coordinate with. Any springy color will work.

Jupiter 03-03-2011 12:45 PM

Hi mom-6,

The colors don't have to match exactly. I am just showing this fabric to give you a feel for what I'd like to shoot for.

Have you decided what you want your blocks to look like? color, pattern, etc

hugs, Jup

Here are some fabrics with spring colors. I know the butterfly would not show but a small portion of it, but that brings them all tog. I have a hard time deciding what fabrics to use. I need some help. I love the wings block so want to do either Grace wk 23, or Elvira wk 21 or Lila wk 16. If I use the blue, I need to throw out the pink, I think. I really think it is better w/o the blue, but not sure.
If I do Grace, I thought use the butterfly for pink and yellow inside it. Use lilac or lacy light green with pink inside it. HELP! I have never been good at picking colors.
If I do Elvira, I thought butterfly in bkgrd. and lilac and pink for the blue and black.
If Lila, I thought butterfly or pink for blue and lilac and yellow for pink and yellow. What do ya'll think?

Also, should I put all the above writing in the original place and just the pics here?

I'm totally loving this fabric...where can I get it?
Do you have a name or designer?
Thanks,
Mikki

You're doing it just right! We need to see the writing and pictures together. Love your colors!

Marcias, Where did you get the butterfly material? I just love it. Haven't seen anything like that in Florida.

The only concern I would have with the last pic is will this one retain any pattern when you put it in the "Block"? You are working with a 2 1/2" template which will then be seperated into sections within the Block. By the time you have the fabrics sewn together in the one Block you will only have a small section of each fabric showing. You may end up with some Blocks only showing a solid color instead of a pattern when you work with something which such a large print.
Actually the dark chocolate one is the one that might be a problem. Not to interfere but just to give you something to think about. I do realize bits and pieces in a whole will show the pattern overall. But if you end up with nothing but solids for a fabric you need to be aware you may lose your pattern unless you fussy cut it.

OraLee, I bought this fabric bak in the 90s (that's 1990s, not 1890s) and can't remember where I bought it. I have slept way too many times since then. Oops, I stand corrected, This is Chester Field Alley Collection 2000 Design by Auntie Nan for Fabrics by Spectrix

OraLee 03-04-2011 05:52 PM

Thanks for the info on the material. Will see if anyone might still have some where.

mom-6 03-04-2011 06:43 PM

Rhonda - The big tropical print is one I was showing Jupiter because it did have all her colors in it and thought she might want to consider it as a possibility for backing her finished quilt as there are about 8 yds on the bolt of it that I have.

I hadn't figured out a way to successfully fussy cut it to focus on any particular color (except the chocolate which she's not featuring). So I'm still looking for something with the caramel color in it. The two pieces I have that come close colorwise are not suitable (sorta silky home decor fabrics) so still searching. Guess I'll just 'hafta go shoppin'.

Didn't mean to interfere but I just wanted to point out something most don't think about. The pattern can get lost when cut down.

I am sure you will all make wonderful quilt blocks and quilts.

Jupiter 03-05-2011 09:35 AM

Hi Mikki,

The fabric is a Robert Kaufman print. I found the link for it.

http://www.robertkaufman.com/fabrics...ng_collections

I hope you find some. In real life, my photo shows the colors better than the www. link. Their photo looks drab compared to what it really is.

hugs, Jupiter

Hi Mom-6,

Those are all nice colors. Thanks for showing me the backing fabric. I don't think it is quite what I want to use. I am more of a small print or geometric pattern kind of person.

I am ready to begin on a block for you.

Rhonda, Does it matter what color we make the block in? Did we already get a partner? I am having a senior moment.

mom-6 03-06-2011 11:47 AM

Jupiter - after I realized how much brown was in there along with your colors I figured you'd probably want something else so no problem. But I was so surprised to find it at all. May end up using it for an OBW.

My colors for most things are blues greens and purples. Here's a picture using one set of blocks that I will most likely use some of the same fabrics in this project. It is my favorite combination so far.

Picture not cooperating. Will try again later

Looks like you did a good job of that wings block. If it helps any I posted paper templates you can try. It might take some of the pressure off and simplify the process abit for you.

I think it is looking gorgeous - but don't drive yourself crazy. Take a break and then go back to it. No hurry - I got a busy week this week and won't get to work on yours until end of the week.

Marcia: Now I am scared!!!! I love the colors!! Rhonda: I printed out the paper template you posted for Marcia while your real templates are on the way to me. Suzi: I might need to start with something easier????? I am going to try to make a sample wing block before I attempt the real one for Suzi. (I hope, I hope, I hope!!!!) If it kicks my b......., I'll will let you know. Carole

Carole, don't get scared because of my bloops. In the past month, I have messed up on two blocks of the month and one should have been a walk in the park. Maybe it is old timers disease but my brain doesn't seem to be clicking on all cylinders. It is probably something really simple that I just can't see now. The lilac should have been on both top halves with the pink and green on the bottom. I would definately try it on some old fabric you don't like first to be sure you get it right, or maybe on some paper. Or use the paper templates Rhonda posted today. I think I will try them next time. Thank you, Rhonda. And thank you, Dee. We still have plenty of time to get these blocks done.

Jupiter 03-07-2011 11:09 AM

Hi Mom-6,

So its more of a teal/blue/green and purple? Also, do you have a certain block you want me to make? I am ready to start, but not sure what I am doing! lol

hugs, Jup

ps... pretty doll quilt!

Hi Mikki,

I was at Joann's Fabric store to day and ran across a bolt of this fabric. I bought 3 more yards so now I have enough for it to be a player in my quilt!... or at least the backing side. Anyway, just to let you know it is still out there...

hugs, Jup

Hi everyone! I'm excited for this swap! I just finished all of my sections for the star point block I made for Carsey this month. I don't have a 60 degree ruler so can't make the wings block this time, I'm sorry Carsey :( . My DH said he'd help me try to figure the 60 degrees out on my ruler, but is really unsure about it. Rhonda, do you have a template for this one?? I received all the other templates you sent, thank you so much!!

I'm almost done Carsey, just have to sew the pieces together. My DH said the block layout is beautiful so I hope you like it too!

Rhonda, do I post a pics of my finished blocks here or do my partners post the block when they receive them???

Just go and print off the paper templates I posted and you can cut out the swatch part without having to have a template or ruler for that angle cut. Besides I think it is a 30 degree anyway. I confuse myself on that all the time but I am pretty sure it is 30. I think I originally posted it as 60 but it isn't.

As for posting your pics I think just like the Doll Quilt Swap I will leave that up to you and your partner. If your partner would like you to post it by all means post it but if you partner would rather it be a surprise then wait til she gets it first.

Iluv2quilt 03-09-2011 05:44 AM

Okay, thanks Rhonda!

marcias 03-09-2011 09:46 AM

Oh, I am so excited for you and all of us, Iluv2quilt. The 1st finished block. Pls. hurry and send it to Carsey so we can see it. That is so inspiring.

I just finished making my first ever "Rhonda Style" block. I used the "Claudia" pattern. I made it in my own colors for a tester, before making anything for anyone else. I think it turned out really nice! I don't have enough contrast between the black and dark brown fabrics, but thats not too bad. I was impressed that almost all my points came together. I was really impressed when, after it was finished and I took a look at it... I made a 12" block out of 36 little-pieced 2" blocks! I would have told you before, that I couldn't do anything like that and have it turn out!

Rhonda, YOU ROCK !!!!!

hugs, Jupiter

That turned out terrific! You did an excellent job on it. Laying it on your inspiration fabric makes it look even better. I keep saying and I'll say it again. Dramatic looks with easy steps. I am so glad the Lord led me in this direction and has given me this method to share with you all. I love helping others find easy ways to quilt!

Jupiter 03-09-2011 05:52 PM

Well you just moved me from basic 9-patch to something wonderful! Thanks... God is good, isn't He!

dream56 03-09-2011 06:26 PM

Beautiful job Jupiter - that is one of my favorite blocks.
