Well if you knew the way I struggled!! In one I used a thinner fabric and it kept buckleing. I had Dorothy sew sets of two blocks together to save me time and I had already sewn the four corners into sets of 4 and three of the 4's already added to other sets when I decided I couldn't live with all the bumpy lumpy mess! So I had to take all four corner sets down to individual blocks and start over! I was not a happy camper!!!
I was on a time crunch also because the customer wanted them for mother's day gifts!

The third one the bottom panel wouldn't fit with the sides to sew together!
One side I had to tear it out and resew it 4 times before I got it to even come close to fitting right. It still isn't right but it is sewn so it won't come apart anyway!

The last one I thought I was ahead of the game and made the bottom panel the right size but that thing decided to teach me a lesson! The stupid thing still was too short but I made it work!! It is not as good as I would like but due to having to get them into the mail I had to do the best I could and shut my eyes! I just hate to send anything out if it isn't the best i can do.

I am a slob where my house is concerned but a raging perfectionist in my piecing!! Split personality!!

beachlady 05-06-2009 05:46 PM

Love your totes Rhonda. They look perfect from here and I am sure thye will be appreciated!

These are two I made a couple of years ago. They are the only ones I made this same size as the ones above.

This first one makes me think of birds flying up into the air.
This pink one is made with my cut down method. It is a "Star Point Block"

This one is the one I used for my avatar

I totally agree with Harmony ! Today is my birthday and Mother's day is coming too .

Rhonda a question about your template . Does it have the degrees marked on it ? I checked your website , this is an interesting technique ! I plan on trying it out , will have to be later on . Annie

They look nice to me.

Nita 05-07-2009 04:14 AM

Rhonda ~ I love your totes! With everyone going green these days, fabric shopping totes are a very timely gift. I'd like to make some as gifts for friends. Did you use a pattern? I'm squinting my eyes to see what you did and it looks to me as if you put the front and back sides of the tote together, wrong sides facing, and serged the edges? I'd like to line mine, as I don't have a serger. I'm curious, too, about your Boston Blocks technique; Is it similar to the square in a Square method of Jody Barrows?

By degrees are you talking about the angles? I add a plastic grid but no angles. I have another template I make that I use for my Star Point Block that I add a thin line for an angle.

Justquilting 05-07-2009 06:12 AM

They look great! Love the colors

Rhonda 05-07-2009 06:13 AM

No I don't serge mine. I just make the sections like a pillow case and sew them together. This way they have a lining inside.

Very nice tote bags!!

mimee4 05-07-2009 01:56 PM

They turned out much better than just ok. Great patterns and fabric choices.

sewnsewer2 05-07-2009 02:17 PM

Those are really nice!!! What size are they? Do they have linings? Anyone would be proud to have one!

Shemjo 05-07-2009 02:29 PM

Rhonda, we all know all the oopses on all our pieces, but if we shut our face, no one else will ever see them, or if they do, they will be too polite to say anything! Relax, enjoy, and say "Thank You"! They are gorgeous!

O h I know but I just had to share my frustrations!! I was so wishing the third one was my fourth and I would be all done!!! But I got there in the end!

They are 18" x 18" x7" unfinished. I didn't actually measure for the finished size but probably about an inch or so less.

I do them like the hotpads. Lay the top face down onto a backing fabric and sew around the edge. Then turn it right side out and repeat for other pieces (back/sides/bottom etc)
This creates a lining inside.

I am teaching a tote pattern on the Quilt Campus site this fall. But it is using my version of a Drunkard's Path Block.

Carol W 05-11-2009 05:09 AM

You always do great work!!!

The totes are so nice.

Mousie 05-11-2009 04:14 PM

You must be a raging perfectionist, bc they look awesome, Rhonda. I love the pink one with the birds flying up into the air, lol.
Do you have a pattern for that one?

Rhonda 05-11-2009 04:22 PM

I can send you one if you want to pm me your address again. I know I have your addy but I have about 350 addresses and it would be easier if you would just send it again!

It is another one of my "Blocks" I call it the "Star Point Block"
It uses an angle cut and sewing three swatches just like the Boston Block just the swatches are put together in a differant way.
It isn't any harder!

Are you wanting the quilt block or the tote pattern or both?

tnjacke 05-11-2009 05:04 PM

Great totes Rhonda. Love the patchwork designs. Did you do a plain back with the design on only one side or do both sides have the patchwork block.

I love making totes and do a lot of them for gifts.

These have plain backs and no pockets but I used to make purses and I would put a mini quilt on the front and a smaller modified mini quilt on the back as a pocket. I love to do pockets but I have been just doing things a little less involved due to the time it takes to do the extras.
I will probably do some with the extras when and if I get the time and put them on my online store site.

MeginMurphy 05-13-2009 10:06 AM

Oh those are really pretty!

Rhonda 05-13-2009 10:21 AM
