I have collected old embroidery pillowcases for years wanting to do a quilt. I had one or two loose ideas and like yours too. Will have to play with the ideas. I remember getting these for Christmas from my favorite aunt when I was a little girl many moons/years ago.

quilterlaurie 04-07-2013 02:43 AM

Beautiful --love the idea---I have some that my Mom and husbands grandmother made with crochet edges---hmmm

This is better than the linen closet

texaspam 04-07-2013 03:01 AM

That turned out very nice. I like how you set them and sashed them.

jmoore 04-07-2013 04:23 AM

Such a beautiful treasure!

I absolutely love your quilt. I am a huge fan of old linens and have a collection of embroidered pillow cases that I could use, but none of them are from loved ones. I use old linens for my window valences. I don't have close neighbors, I'm on 25 acres and the closest neighbor is through the woods so I don't need full drapes or curtains. Your quilt will be a great keepsake to pass on through generations to come.

I also had never seen or heard of a quilt made with embroidered pillowcases. I have several pairs - ones done by the lady I am named for and some done by me when I was a teenager. They are tucked away in a cedar chest because I could not think of actually using them as pillowcases. This is a great idea - thank you so much for sharing your quilt and for the inspiration!

Elaine433 04-07-2013 05:06 AM

That is so very special.

Evie 04-07-2013 05:35 AM

Your quilt is beautiful! My late mom embroidered lots of pillow cases, many with hand crocheted lacy edges. But, alas, all of them have been well used so I don't have any to put into a quilt.

cpcarolyn 04-07-2013 05:43 AM

What a great idea. Wonderful quilt. Great job.

jbj137 04-07-2013 05:52 AM

You did a lovely job. What a good idea to use the pillow cases for a quilt.

What a great Idea! Love your quilt. Great Job!

lue 04-07-2013 06:46 AM

How preciously beautiful! What a grand idea! And you're right about linens not lasting long in a linen closet. My grandmother had beautiful handkerchiefs that we gave her but she wouldn't use them because she was "saving them for special occasions." She started using some of them after some dry rotted in the Texas heat of the linen closet. So glad you made such good use of yours.

debcavan 04-07-2013 07:00 AM

That quilt is enough to bring me to tears. It is gorgeous and what a treasure. I'm glad you FMQ'd it instead of using the embroidery machine. It is your art along with your Mother's art.

WMD926 04-07-2013 07:01 AM

What a great idea. I was given a set of pillowcases from each of my great aunts back in the 70's that they had each embroidered. I hadn't thought about making a quilt out of them. I think they may be my next big project! Love your quilt by the way.

Annz 04-07-2013 07:11 AM

Wow!! how special is that. Beautiful quilt.

bibi 04-07-2013 07:23 AM

Incredible lovely and thoughtful. What a treasure!

Your quilt is such a great keepsake and so pretty.

solstice3 04-07-2013 08:33 AM

I have plans for one but need to get the yellow out first

llong0233 04-07-2013 08:46 AM

Oh my gosh. You did a beautiful job and the handwork is lovely. Good for you for honoring all the hand embroidery by not using your machine. These humble, beautiful works of art are to be seen and admired and you will do that now. What a great idea and execution!

I had two pillowcases that weren't as white as the others. It helped to use the back of them both for parts of their blocks as it seemed whiter there (perhaps because they were folded/stored and that helped protect the backs). I really noticed the colour difference between those two blocks and the others before I did the quilting but now I don't notice any differences. The quilting made all the difference! I asked family friends to tell me which blocks looked a different white and they couldn't see any difference. Maybe they're polite but I don't notice the difference either. LOL!

MargeD 04-07-2013 08:51 AM

What a great way to preserve those hand embroidered pillowcases. The ones I have that my Mom made haven't held up well with all the use they got, but they are still a treasure.

Thank you all so much! The people on this board are so supportive! I know I love looking at everyone's wonderful creations but need to spend more time giving feedback to others. Your kind words mean so much! And it's so inspiring to look through all the pictures - we can get so many great ideas from each other. I wish this quilt was my idea but no, I'm a copycat. I'm just so very grateful to have seen a pillowcase quilt that got me started on my project.

luciab 04-07-2013 09:22 AM

Thank you! The white pillowcase part is 18" square made of three sections from a pillowcase.
