I have a question. Are "layer cakes" always 10" squares?? I am trying to figure out what size layer cakes she used in her video.

I think layer cakes are 10", I am cutting my stash into 9 1/2" squares, using my 9 1/2" square ruler, to make my blocks and the first sewn block is squared up to 12". Have not cut/sewn the final block yet but am pleased with starting with the 9 1/2" fabrics, even numbers to deal with when cutting them into thirds.

Here is what the other version of the Disappearing Pinwheel looks like. I love Missouri Star tutorials.

Love it. Colors are great! Did you have trouble with the bias making HST's?

Maureen 02-06-2014 07:39 AM

I loved the tutorial but IHad trouble cutting it. I did three and one of my cuts keeps coming out too big. O don't know what I'm doing wrong.

no just used spray sizing and be gentle and it works ok-sew carefully

QM 02-06-2014 08:16 AM

That looks like fun.

Shirlrh 02-06-2014 08:53 AM

I really like it also. You did a great job.

purplefiend 02-06-2014 06:14 PM

I tried that block, it was easy. However all of the outside edges throughout the entire block are bias.

We have a group that meets once a month and we did this block at our last meeting. The ladies said they enjoyed bringing their machines and learning a new technique (we don't always). I love helping them learn something new - they aren't always excited about new techniques and run screaming from applique - I am going to have to find something easy to get them hooked! Maybe a wool applique project with just a few pieces - I probably have enough scraps for the few brave enough to try it.

w7sue 02-06-2014 11:49 PM

I am going to do a stay-stitch around the outside edges of the two I made because of all the bias edges.

Looks good! That's one for my 2014 list!
