poor unloved irises

I bought this paper pieced wall hanging this morning at a garage sale. Price? $2. Poor thing was made by the seller's Mom and was hanging beside the furnace! I think I will wash it, give it a new hanger and hang it in my sewing room. The picture quality is not good, the fabrics are quite nice.

I have one of those I made many years ago too...kind of ran out of wall space..... I called mine "Stilted Iris" I think it's an Eileen Sullivan pattern ( foundations) Enjoy your new treasure!

Mariposa 05-04-2013 08:26 AM

Terrific find! It will make a great addition to your sewing room! :)

Those Siberian Iris look so light and graceful compared to the 'regular' iris.

Sewfine 05-04-2013 09:00 AM

That is beautiful find.

Tartan 05-04-2013 09:05 AM

If she only knew how much work went into that paper pieced wall hanging! Great find for you at $2.

I hope Mom is not a member on here- can you imagine! Well done saving it.

cathyvv 05-04-2013 09:24 AM

I always wonder if the folks selling these "made by Mom" treasures realize that they are selling a little piece of their Moms heart.

It's beautiful and I know YOU will enjoy it. Good save!

Chasing Hawk 05-04-2013 09:26 AM

What a complicated pp project. So glad you have rescued it, since it wasn't appreciated in it's old home.

solstice3 05-06-2013 03:42 AM

lovely piece

LindaJR 05-06-2013 04:43 AM

I buy counter cross stich pieces I find at yard sales and thrift shops. I feel so bad for the person who did the work and it was not appreciated for the work involved. I plan to make a quilt with the pieces I am collecting into a quilt. Ithink I will call it something like A new life for hard work. I used to do counted cross stitch and embrodiery, so I know the work put into these pieces. Same with the quilts, although I have only done wall hangings so far.

Krystyna 05-06-2013 04:45 AM

Poor irises! Why on earth would it hang next to a furnace? I take that back. After years of estate sales, I've seen much stranger things. Enjoy your new treasure!

quiltmom04 05-06-2013 05:59 AM

Looks like it could use a bit more quilting, too!

quilt queen 05-06-2013 06:21 AM

It's a wonderful thing to save this treasure...so ,many hours of work...$2.00?

tessagin 05-06-2013 06:59 AM

I would be anxious to see a better photo because this really isn't bad. Trying to imagine brighter photo. Amazing what one can find at a garage sale.

Daisy Dew 05-06-2013 08:20 AM

Those Iris are a sturdy lot - I love their smell - good find. See you can't keep a good iris down!

klgls 05-06-2013 09:06 AM

Great rescue!

cpcarolyn 05-06-2013 12:49 PM

So glad you rescued it. Very pretty

MargeD 05-06-2013 12:53 PM

What a fantastic find and I'm glad you rescued it. Sometimes people don't appreciate what goes into making quilts and equate them with cheap knockoffs from China. We need to keep educating people about the importance of older quilts, wall or bed.

JanieH 05-06-2013 01:46 PM

So glad you found it, rescued it, and will now give it a loving home!

ccthomas 05-06-2013 05:26 PM

..wouldn't we all feel blessed to have our Mother's sewing/quilting treasures? especially with Mother's Day so close.

sewdamncute 05-06-2013 05:28 PM

Great find!

travlr99 05-06-2013 06:04 PM

Sewbeeit2 05-06-2013 08:12 PM

Just finished stippling and mctavishing one of these treasures that I bought at a thrift store for 2$ also...I really cherish who ever spent all the time making the georgeous irises.
So glad to be able to put Eileen Sullivan's name on the back for the pattern credit...
......it will stay on my wall.
It's called , "this is why I go to thrift stores!"
