I have some gorgeous Kona Bay fabric I purchased to make a OBW, but wanted to make a practice one first. Learned a couple of things. In the book the author states that you should construct the hexes with the straight grain of the fabric to the outside. I was trying to make them all pretty so I didn't do this. You really can't pick out individual hexes in the final product and the ones made like she suggested were easier to work with, so that's what I'll do in the 'real' one. Also, it really does help to put the hexes on a vertical display board. Duh. I used a table and as soon as I was done piecing the top and hung it up, I saw that I should have moved a couple. Need to figure out how to get a work surface up somewhere.
The back of the quilt was made from left over hexes. I have posted this before, but if you do OBWs or just like kalidescope quilts, see if you can locate a copy of Sara Nephews "Doubledipity: more serendipity quilts" she has dozens of patterns you can make from your left over hexes. The quilt is 36 X 42. Thanks for looking. Front Back |

Great job, they are beautiful!

I finally gave in and ordered the OBW book. Along with some rulers. I got one ruler yesterday, now patiently waiting for the book. Your quilt is georgous, and I can't wait to try it. I just need to find a fabric. Any suggestions or tips for picking one out?
Beautiful work. Love the fabric that you used and love the back side too.
Did you state "PRACTICE" quilt? Pardon my astonishment as I am new. You put together whole quilts, not just blocks, but whole quilts for practice or for auditioning fabric? I am totally amazed. That quilt would be done and ready to be wrapped for it's intended if it was at my house. And now you'll make another just like it?
I will never be good at this. I do not have time or patience for practice quilts, much less blocks. |
Wow...How cool is that!

Beautiful! I really like what you've done on the back of the quilt, this quilt could easily be reversible or made into two quilts, nice work!!

thanks for the info, I have one on my list, I think your quilt turned out fantastic!
This is just beautiful!!
So beautiful. The colors I love. The back is almost a pretty as the front. Thanks for sharing
Nice Job! It is very pretty. My only suggestion for the next one would be to use a large print with lots more colors and contrast. It was such a good idea to have a small practice piece. Your work is very lovely.
I always bite off something bed sized. I do have a few that will never get quilted and finished because I don't like them. You probably waste less time and fabric. |
Wow!!! It's beautiful!!!
OMG your OBW is awesome.. If this is a practice one I can't wait to see the really one...
I think I like the back as much, maybe more, than the front! Great work!
Pretty! Wonderful back too!

This quilt is lovely - it's interesting to see one oriented with the half hexes top and bottom - I usually put mine along the sides, no reason, just habit! |
I really like this and what you did on the back is very nice too.
Looks like a quilt to me. My practice work usually ends up in the rag bag.:)
Really beautiful! The back is stunning as well. Great "practice" quilt; I can only hope my first one comes out as well. lol
