Practicing

I am taking a Craftsy class called Quilting in Negative Spaces. And I ordered a ruler foot for my Juki...mainly to do SID, because I just can't SID on the frame no matter how I hard I try. My ruler foot came in the mail this morning. So, I took a piece of sheet and started practicing the tiles that are in the class. You are supposed to match your thread to the color of the fabric which will hide your mistakes and where you get out of line, and they say it will then give "texture" to a quilt. I didn't match the thread so I could see where I was going. I used a gold/brown multicolor thread & a dark brown thread in the bobbin, and you can see everywhere I lost my way...lol. But, with lots more practice I may get brave enough to do it on an actual quilt. I have the quilt top made that's for the class, but don't know if I'll do the tiles. I do think I'm going to like using a ruler. Do you think they look like tiles?

Looks great to me!
Doing good! They say practice makes perfect but I get bored, easy. So I just try to do my best. Yours looks good.
I need this .... my SID accurately is impossible! Thanks for sharing.
Nice! I have found once the quilt is washed (rinsed) the lines will blend. Mine do.
I think it is time to give up practicing and start quilting a quilt.
looking very good.... :)

looks pretty good to me. I'm impressed that your spacing is so even on each pattern.
Looks perfect to me. I don't do SID. I quilt about a 1/4" from the ditch and I like that neater look much better. I only use a DSM for quilting.
I think it looks very cool!
I love it. Hugs
Yes Ma'am, they sure do look like tiles. You're doing real good. I've gotta get started trying this. No time.
I agree, I think you are ready to quilt. Great job!
It is looking good. And it is practice practice practice. As you practice, you gain confidence
Yes, intricate and great work.
Save that practice and bind it!! Maybe it is golden, but it leaves me Green with envy!! Great job! I would go for it !
You did a great job!
Is a ruler foot for a domestic sewing machine? What is the advantage of having one?
You are doing an awesome job!
Looks great!
Can you share a picture of your ruler foot and where you got it? I've never seen one. I'd love to use a ruler as a guide with my Juki. I have the TL 2010...what model do you have? |

I have also viewed that course and your work seems very good to me! Keep up the good work.
Please show picture of your ruler foot. What type of machine is a DSM?? Tinker
Looks great! I've viewed the course but haven't tried it yet. This will give me the push to give it a whirl.
you did a great job

I've gotten a few requests & pm's for pictures. Here are a couple. I held the regular hopping foot to the ruler foot (which is on the machine), so you could see the difference. I use a Juki TL 98 Q on a Little Gracie II frame. I bought the ruler foot off Ebay for $75 with free shipping. I chose this one for the open toe feature. There is a closed toe ruler foot at www.finishingtouchesquiltingstudio.com for $70, but I don't know about the shipping cost. You cannot use a regular quilting ruler with this. It has to be a ruler that is 1/4" thick...about the thickness of two regular quilting rulers together. The ruler foot instructions says it should only be used with a machine on a frame.

It looks really good!!!!!!!!!!!
Bind it and hang it in your sewing room/space. You are doing a fantastic job. In six months make another to replace your first practice piece. I'm sure you will be proud of your new skills and accomplishments.
I think it looks wonderful
Looks like you are doing great, practice, practice and more practice!!!!!!!
Looks like you are learning quickly
I think your practice looks amazing. I've learned to look at each quilting project as part of the journey. My earlier quilting attempts aren't great, but they are part of my quilting story, and I love them just the same.
Looks great to me too, you're braver than I am. I'm in the middle of a small baby quilt that I will quilt myself and I'm already having anxiety attacks! Stitch in the ditch I can do, but I want to add something special to the quilt.
Looking good.
Looks fantastic. Great job.
Good student, excellent class and now you should feel ready to start on a quilt. You did really good, and I kind of like the tiles
