Practicing

I am taking a Craftsy class called Quilting in Negative Spaces. And I ordered a ruler foot for my Juki...mainly to do SID, because I just can't SID on the frame no matter how I hard I try. My ruler foot came in the mail this morning. So, I took a piece of sheet and started practicing the tiles that are in the class. You are supposed to match your thread to the color of the fabric which will hide your mistakes and where you get out of line, and they say it will then give "texture" to a quilt. I didn't match the thread so I could see where I was going. I used a gold/brown multicolor thread & a dark brown thread in the bobbin, and you can see everywhere I lost my way...lol. But, with lots more practice I may get brave enough to do it on an actual quilt. I have the quilt top made that's for the class, but don't know if I'll do the tiles. I do think I'm going to like using a ruler. Do you think they look like tiles?

Looks great to me!

tessagin 07-01-2013 12:54 PM

Doing good! They say practice makes perfect but I get bored, easy. So I just try to do my best. Yours looks good.

MaryMo 07-01-2013 01:03 PM

I need this .... my SID accurately is impossible! Thanks for sharing.

misspriss 07-01-2013 01:13 PM

Nice! I have found once the quilt is washed (rinsed) the lines will blend. Mine do.

Tartan 07-01-2013 01:31 PM

I think it is time to give up practicing and start quilting a quilt.

Diane007 07-01-2013 01:37 PM

looking very good.... :)

Tartan, You always have words of encouragement to everyone. Thank you! Debbie

looks pretty good to me. I'm impressed that your spacing is so even on each pattern.

Jingle 07-01-2013 02:02 PM

Looks perfect to me. I don't do SID. I quilt about a 1/4" from the ditch and I like that neater look much better. I only use a DSM for quilting.

dcquilter 07-01-2013 02:07 PM

I think it looks very cool!

omacookie 07-01-2013 02:17 PM

I love it. Hugs

barny 07-01-2013 02:35 PM

Yes Ma'am, they sure do look like tiles. You're doing real good. I've gotta get started trying this. No time.

SewExtremeSeams 07-01-2013 02:45 PM

I agree, I think you are ready to quilt. Great job!

debcavan 07-01-2013 02:57 PM

It is looking good. And it is practice practice practice. As you practice, you gain confidence

Barbwork 07-01-2013 04:02 PM

Yes, intricate and great work.

nanacc 07-01-2013 04:08 PM

Save that practice and bind it!! Maybe it is golden, but it leaves me Green with envy!! Great job! I would go for it !

Grandma Peg 07-01-2013 04:15 PM

You did a great job!

GailG 07-01-2013 04:24 PM

Is a ruler foot for a domestic sewing machine? What is the advantage of having one?

catladyquilts 07-01-2013 04:45 PM

You are doing an awesome job!

katier825 07-01-2013 04:45 PM

Looks great!

Can you share a picture of your ruler foot and where you got it? I've never seen one. I'd love to use a ruler as a guide with my Juki. I have the TL 2010...what model do you have?

I have the 98 and would also like to know.

I agree with earlier posts - time to start quilting - lookin good!

bjchad 07-01-2013 06:48 PM

I have also viewed that course and your work seems very good to me! Keep up the good work.

tinker 07-01-2013 07:34 PM

Please show picture of your ruler foot. What type of machine is a DSM?? Tinker

raksmum 07-01-2013 09:51 PM

Looks great! I've viewed the course but haven't tried it yet. This will give me the push to give it a whirl.

QuiltnNan 07-02-2013 03:35 AM

I've gotten a few requests & pm's for pictures. Here are a couple. I held the regular hopping foot to the ruler foot (which is on the machine), so you could see the difference. I use a Juki TL 98 Q on a Little Gracie II frame. I bought the ruler foot off Ebay for $75 with free shipping. I chose this one for the open toe feature. There is a closed toe ruler foot at www.finishingtouchesquiltingstudio.com for $70, but I don't know about the shipping cost. You cannot use a regular quilting ruler with this. It has to be a ruler that is 1/4" thick...about the thickness of two regular quilting rulers together. The ruler foot instructions says it should only be used with a machine on a frame.

It looks really good!!!!!!!!!!!

AZ Cottontail Quilter 07-02-2013 06:58 AM

Bind it and hang it in your sewing room/space. You are doing a fantastic job. In six months make another to replace your first practice piece. I'm sure you will be proud of your new skills and accomplishments.

quiltstringz 07-02-2013 08:08 AM

I think it looks wonderful

grammysharon 07-02-2013 01:01 PM

Looks like you are doing great, practice, practice and more practice!!!!!!!

twinkie 07-03-2013 02:55 AM

Looks like you are learning quickly

Kris P 07-03-2013 03:56 AM

I think your practice looks amazing. I've learned to look at each quilting project as part of the journey. My earlier quilting attempts aren't great, but they are part of my quilting story, and I love them just the same.

Retired Fire Chief 07-03-2013 04:42 AM

Looks great to me too, you're braver than I am. I'm in the middle of a small baby quilt that I will quilt myself and I'm already having anxiety attacks! Stitch in the ditch I can do, but I want to add something special to the quilt.

cpcarolyn 07-03-2013 05:52 AM

Looking good.

MargeD 07-03-2013 06:26 AM

Looks fantastic. Great job.

IBQUILTIN 07-03-2013 08:36 AM

Good student, excellent class and now you should feel ready to start on a quilt. You did really good, and I kind of like the tiles

I've given up on SID and instead just stitch 1/4" from the ditch using the ditch as a guide. I am much happier.

bibi 07-03-2013 10:04 AM

Wow! Very nice!
