Beautiful work. I am really jealous too!! He is really concentrating on his sewing by the looks of the one picture. Good for him-keep up the great work and be very proud of him.

dunster 05-30-2014 03:34 PM

I think there's a blue ribbon in the making.

Jo M 05-30-2014 03:47 PM

Yep, that kid can really rock a sewing machine! Hmm, must have had a good teacher. You two make a nice team.

SlightlyOffQuilter 05-30-2014 04:01 PM

I just had him read through all your wonderful comments, needless to say his face is VERY red right now from blushing ! He says Thank You and that he will have me post pictures once get gets the top together , we are waiting for the rest of his fabrics to come in the mail, hopefully monday or tuesday so he can finish the top !

Tweety2911 05-30-2014 04:04 PM

He is doing an awesome job! Great teacher too!!

Elisabrat 05-30-2014 04:39 PM

I think he is doing a great job. Better than I am maybe he could teach me these most awful of all blocks to do? I suck at these and Wont do them! I am so wishful he was here to help me! (envy factor 10)

Quilter 65 05-30-2014 05:15 PM

Wow, look at him go! Those are beautifully precise.

This is not the first time his perfect points have made me jealous either . The quilt he made last fall is 98% perfect points too ! Last falls quilt was HST, and this is his FIRST time EVER making geese. He is some sort of quilting prodigy or something !

Here are some of his completed strip sets , awaiting the rest of their colors so he can begin putting it all together.

Here he is busy at the machine, now that I have got up from it myself, he was waiting patiently all day for machine time !

I have a feeling he is going to do very well in the fair this year ! This will be his first time entering a quilt at the fair and he is being VERY precise and wanting to make sure he has it done in time. I told him he has lots of time, it does not need to be finished till August !

Wishing him great success and I hope he places Best of Show. He is only making sure he has everything done in plenty of time without having to rush and stress out over finishing at the last minute. There are those who do not work well under pressure. Now when is he going to get his own machine, so he doesn't have to wait in line to use yours? You now have an idea for a B day or Christmas gift for him. How old is he? Love his work so far, any pictures of quilt he has made or as he made one yet?

Gerbie 05-31-2014 03:32 AM

I have never thought about the fact that yes we do pay for both sides of the fabric, so why not use both sides. I'll have to give this some thought when I start my next quilt which may be today. Great idea- than your nephew.

nwm50 05-31-2014 04:46 AM

Wow..I'm jealous too! But so happy he has conquered the points! I can't make but two out of 15 to be good! Lol
I'm sure he will fare greatly at the upcoming fair. Keep us posted on this please!

coopah 05-31-2014 04:56 AM

Not only are the points perfect, but he has an awesome color sense! Nice job getting him to quilt!

cookiemonster 05-31-2014 05:03 AM

Be proud of his interest, marriage will not be a problem for him in the future. In the meantime, he is concentrating, on doing create things, with his ability... Remember, Physics is all based on angles, triangles, where all the trades are derived. Myself failed Physic 1st time, then came quilting, physic was a breeze 2nd time. My hand/eye coordination, was above average. (all your production jobs).. Sewing has lots to offer!

solstice3 05-31-2014 05:07 AM

Kiddos to him for his attention to detail and realizing that REAL MEN sew! Kudos to you for providing the opportunity and encouragement! I see a blue ribbon in his future.

kydeb 05-31-2014 05:22 AM

WOW!!! He has definitely got talent and skill!! Beautiful work - can't wait to see the finished quilt. It's going to be fabulous!!

jbj137 05-31-2014 05:38 AM

***
*** He is a fro sure winner for the Fair with this quilt or any he makes.
*** They are great.
***
*** I taught both my kids to do the basics of sewing & cooking, but
*** they were not interested in more or deeper sewing.
***
*** Every one needs the basics to survive or have lots of $$$ for alterations.

Boys do go at it differently. My son made a small wallhanging for his 2nd grade teacher, and when he was in 6th grade he wanted to make a Colonial Flag quilt for his bed, so he designed it and cut it and quilted it himself. He came at it more like a design project than a sewing project.

shasta5718 05-31-2014 07:09 AM

Check your local ads or craig's list, you may find an older machine that is at a reasonable price for him. Tell him to keep up the good work. My son is also a quilter and does amazing work.

fayeberry 05-31-2014 07:25 AM

how wonderful your son is sewing, and so good at it! How proud you must be!

oldtnquiltinglady 05-31-2014 07:30 AM

I love that the boy is so into the quilting. I am going to show this posting to my GD, hoping that she will take any kind of interest in a sewing machine. And if she does, I hope you don't live in TN, because anything she makes will be entered in the fair here (and of course I would want her to win).

Ricky Tims may be about ready to retire when your son comes into his own. Show him some of RT's work. He is amazing; and a wonderful entertainer to boot.

BrendaK 05-31-2014 08:04 AM

Glad he does have his own machine. In his own time he will use his machine and let you have yours back. Then watch out. When he figures out what all the buttons can do he will fly. Like everyone else I wish him luck at the fair. No matter how he does he is still a winner in my book. Will be looking forward to seeing the finished project. Give him a hug for me and I guess he knows how proud we all are of him. Is his grandmother still alive to share the pride?Where ever she is I am sure that she is smiling. You both did a wonderful job of helping him. Thanks for sharing your son with us for a little while. BrendaK

BrendaK 05-31-2014 08:13 AM

Sorry having trouble with my machine and didn't mean to double post. Looking forward to his next project. BrendaK

joyful1 05-31-2014 08:27 AM

How proud you must be of him. He's doing great!

IBQUILTIN 05-31-2014 09:40 AM

His quilt is beautiful and isn't it wonderful to see a young person with something in his hands besides a cell phone or tablet?

Annz 05-31-2014 09:44 AM

His work is beautiful and he looks so intent on doing a perfect job and it shows.

JuneBillie 05-31-2014 09:58 AM

Wow, he has done some very nice work there. Such nice colors, and great pieces. This young man is doing a wonderful job. You must be very proud.

Luv Quilts and Cats 05-31-2014 10:26 AM

So nice that he can enjoy a hobby with you. I hope he does well in the upcoming show! Imagine how excited he would be if he won a ribbon! I think he needs a machine of his own though, LOL!

Luv Quilts and Cats 05-31-2014 10:33 AM

I also have used the back side of fabrics. My quilting friends laughed at me. Now when I look at fabric, I check the backside too. Sometimes the right side is not right but the backside is a softer color and works great in a quilt.

terri bb 05-31-2014 10:37 AM

this is so heartwarming! i LOVE to see kids interested in things like this! your son is a treasure! i see a future "Lipinski" here!! creativity is wonderful and the ones who are the most free spirited seem to have the most. what a great momma you are!

MargeD 05-31-2014 01:48 PM

I'm happy to see a young man learning to quilt, that's totally awesome. Maybe a sewing machine for Christmas might be nice and greatly appreciated so you aren't "fighting" over the machine. It's easy to see that h learned his lessons from you well, that's why he's doing so well. Good luck to him at the fair this year.

oldquilter 05-31-2014 02:03 PM

Wow, nice job. HE should be proud! Maybe he can teach me!

callen 05-31-2014 02:42 PM

He is doing an amazing job & I too am envious. Best of luck to him at the fair. I can see ribbons in his future, lots & lots of ribbons. You have done a terrific job teaching him sewing skills. Well done Mom.

Cinjossar 05-31-2014 02:51 PM

What an awesome job he is doing. I can't tell you how jealous I am. Neither of my children are interested in sewing, at all... I love your son's work and I hope that he realizes he is being adopted by about 10,000 quilters here on the board that will love to see his work and encourage him to keep sewing! We are family here and will be so proud, right along with you. Love the colors that he chose.

starshine 05-31-2014 03:18 PM

Prodigy indeed, he is doing amazing. Good luck on the fair!

JanieH 05-31-2014 03:55 PM

I am so proud of the great job he is doing and, like you, jealous of his great points.

ccthomas 05-31-2014 06:44 PM

He is so lucky to have you in his life teaching, sharing, and giving him these precious times.

Grandma Peg 05-31-2014 06:48 PM

That's is so cool that he enjoys sewing and he really does do a great job! Bet you are a proud mom!

sewbizgirl 05-31-2014 07:08 PM

Yes, he's pretty danged good! Get him his own sewing machine. A nice vintage Singer can be had for $50 or less. Check your local Craigslist.

danmar 05-31-2014 07:23 PM

It looks like he is a natural quilt maker. Great job on his points.

Vera39760 05-31-2014 08:07 PM

Good luck to your son at the fair. He is doing beautiful work. I enjoy sewing with my grandchildren.

PolkaBabe 06-02-2014 04:45 PM

Looks like he is doing very well. He may need his own sewing machine..... Good luck to him at the fair.
