a double bed top is 54 x 75. if the pattern part of the top is 72 . that will give you 9" of over hang of the pattern on each side.

a queen is 60 x 80. if the pattern part is 72 then you get 4" overhang on each side. you may want to add borders to the quilt top. ouch!

doesn't it seem never to end? but, you're right: you're not doing this for nothing! she won't appreciate it until she's at least partly grown, but when she does, she'll want more and more and more. look out! no good deed goes unpunished, right? teach you to be a great mom!

Thanks, butterflywing. I figured I would have to make it wider, but hadn't yet checked sizes for the different mattresses. I figure I will do to the pattern first, and toss the top on her bed to see what to add where. She sleeps like the Princess and the Pea (high bed frame with two mattresses, as we have no where to store the extra one), so a good long drop won't be hanging on the floor.

Yeah, that no good deed goes unpunished thing...this is for the 11 year old. Now our 14 year old daughter is chomping at the bit for hers.

omak, thank you for your comments. I did buy a book called Color Confidence (forget the author), and I try to use the principles I read in it. I've been looking at it so much, I have lost how I first felt about the fabric selection. I often rely on my daughters because, despite their young age, they both have exceptionally good eyes for colour. Must get it from their father, 'cause I painted the front door Big Bird Yellow. Didn't work well.

swimmom 07-13-2009 06:23 PM

totally fascinating!!!

omak 07-13-2009 06:33 PM

Big Bird Yellow - - front door! LOL
That isn't color challenged, that is liking DEFINITE colors! What's not to love?
I don't care for pink, but my FAVORITE color combination is an electric pink with neon apple green ... that is such a happy color ... don't you think?
and, I always imagine what the house color will look like on a gray, rainy day!
That yellow door will be soooo inviting! <G>

i have a queen sized bed and a high rise, 24" off the floor because it's a reproduction. they were high and today's mattresses and boxes are huge.. yours may be bigger. i make my quilts between 96"and 100". that's what i shoot for because my bed has a side rail that allows me to stop there. that gives me a good overhang (up to the rail) and lets me tuck under the pillow with the 100. the 96 not so tucky. i would never get the high mattress again. there's no reason for them and they're much more expensive. i don't have to sleep in the air. besides, i'm short and i have to climb into bed. no joke. the mattress top comes all the way up to my waist almost, so i can't even sit on the darn bed without acrobatics.

]Oh boy is that gorgeous, Venice Rose by Norah McMeeking right? I'm intimidated by paper piecing though. Love your color choices.

Baren*eh*ked_canadian 07-14-2009 06:13 AM

I just ordered the book from chapters bookstore, can't wait to get it!

jacquemoe 07-14-2009 06:44 AM

What a fantastic quilt project. The color combinations are beautiful. I hope you find time to work on it. I'm sure we all want to see more of this baby.

Oh, don't be intimidated by paper piecing, it is soooo easy. If you can follow step by step instructions, and can pay attention to detail (like running your stitch line right along the side of the folded freezer paper) you have it made. It's kind of like paint by number. But easier.

I'm a teach myself kind of person, and trust me, this is one of the easiest things I've ever learned.

xapisgrace 07-14-2009 10:47 AM

that is absolutely amazing. and yes, very very scary for someone who hasn't made any "patterned" quilts. I've only done squares put together for all of mine up till now. I'm trying to find easy patterns to start with, but this one is amazing... maybe in about 20 years or so I might have the confidence.

Jim's Gem 07-14-2009 04:33 PM

WOW Beautiful. I have looked at that pattern and a couple of finished quilts. It may have to go on the "to do" list here someday!!!

Lucky Patsy's 07-14-2009 11:22 PM

Wooooooooooow! That is awesome! I am sure hoping you find more time to work onit and am looking forward to seeing future pictures!

gaigai 07-15-2009 02:22 AM

Thank you so much for posting your WIP! I love it, and the colors you've chosen are awesome. I think because it's a big medallion that it will be much easier than I thought, because I initially thought the whole thing would be about half the size it is! LOL.

I remember walking through Venice and thinking that the tiles would make great patterns. Now I just HAVE to order some for myself. Sigh, another TO DO!

EDIT: i am such a dope. the drop from the top of my mattress to the top of the rail is 24", not to the floor. to the floor is 36". that was why i need the 100". there. that should explain things better. that gives me 20" overhang, which is not so much with a 36" high bed. remember also, that the person in the bed pulls up the overhang and you don't want her/his tush sticking out. LOL!

Uh huh. Having a husband who rolls over and leaves MY tush sticking out in the cold, I'm taking that into account.

butterflywing 07-15-2009 08:19 PM

you're comin' in loud'n'clear, good buddy!

10-4, over'n'out :P

jdavis 07-16-2009 05:46 AM

Mmmmm! Scrumptious!

Zoe 07-16-2009 08:27 AM

This is absolutely spectacular. I would love to see it finished too. What a wonderful work of art you will have.

Sheree from Chicago 07-16-2009 09:27 PM

What a beautiful quilt. I really like the colors. Can't wait to see more. Is there a way you can leave your sewing set up so that you can have a half hour here and there? They all add up (I'm just anxious to see the completed quilt).

wvdek 07-16-2009 09:48 PM

Had to bookmark this to show my friend and quilt teacher. Just scrumpdillyicious.

quiltswithdogs 07-16-2009 10:03 PM

Ye gads... that looks hard to me! Gorgeous colors!

Wish I could, but my sewing room is my dining room, and we don't have an eat-in kitchen. So every evening, I have to clear it away for dinner.

I try to sneak a bit in here and there, but my kids are 11 and 14, so I'm still a pretty busy mom and wife, especially in the summer. Think I'll let the house go for a bit, though, and attack it again this weekend.

 Funny--I most always run color ideas by my daughter and/or Kennedy, my 13 year old barn buddy.

That is a gorgeous quilt--paperpiecing scares me--so I'm REALLY impressed. I hope I don't miss it when you post the finished project.

Marcia 07-17-2009 05:22 AM

WOW!!!!!

ai731 07-17-2009 05:42 AM

That is gorgeous!!!

rb. 07-17-2009 08:19 AM

No, no, NO!!!!! You guys are getting the WRONG idea. It's really, really easy. Seriously. Time consuming? Sure, but really easy. Honestly, you could all do it just as well.

sed823 07-17-2009 03:03 PM

This is beautiful, and I love the colors. You must finished the project and post a picture before March rolls around again! Would love to see it. Thanks for sharing.

kd124 07-18-2009 10:37 PM

heidikins 07-20-2009 07:00 PM

This is a wonderful start to a fantastic quilt. I can't wait to see it when it is finished also. I love this pattern and book. One day I would like to make one too but it will be a very long time though. Your colors are beautiful.

hapytlk 08-05-2009 06:47 AM

This literally takes my breath away. I LOVE the colors.

amma 08-05-2009 01:39 PM

have you had a chance to work anymore on this beauty?? We would all love to see more pictures, if you have  :D :D :D

user3587 08-05-2009 05:00 PM

rb.

Do you purchase the book as well as the foundation papers. I've done paper piece but the pattern and papers came together. Why would you buy a paper piece book without the paper pattern? I found both for 31.80 on softexpression.com. If you are wanting to make a larger quilt do you just buy more papers? I love your pattern and your colors, I want to make one NOW, but that's not possible. I have an addiction and this board supports it. I want one of everything I see on it. To work to work I go, so I can feed my addiction.
