QR code I can't beleive it

My niece has been living with her boyfriend for 15 years. They have two children and they are well established and have lots of fun projects. A week ago, I was told that they decided to get married and they will invite just a few people and I am invited. Now, what do you get them for a gift.... My brother says: no gift, as they have all they want, guests will only pay for their meal and that's it, just a fun reunion.
After reading all the info I could find here on the board and being inspired by some quilters here who posted pictures of their quilt or /and labels made of QR code I thought it would be a good practice for me and a unique "something" for them. I say "something" as I am not allowed to bring a gift loll

So, I decided I would just make them a bag (tote bag or grocery bag, I don't really know how to call it as my english lacks some vocabulary) and I decided to generate a QR code. It ended up being a 25 square grid. For a bag I thought 12 1/2 inches plus sides, top and bottom would do it. So I was determine to try it with 1/2 inch seam... What a trial for my scant 1/4 inch seam lolll

now I can work on making a bag

I'm jumping with joy right now because it works.

It works great :-) very nice gift, oooops I mean nice something to bring to the wedding.

KwiltyKahy 05-17-2014 03:16 PM

These fascinate me. How do you do that? And what does it say?

Does it say "It's about time", LOL. Seriously, that's a thoughtful gift that will be special to them because you made it. Best wishes to the happy couple.

Maggie_Sue 05-17-2014 03:49 PM

It says the name of the couple and date. Well done!!

Kathy T. 05-17-2014 04:20 PM

What a great idea you had! Well done.

jenOSU 05-17-2014 04:35 PM

KarenR you need a QRreader app to scan the QR and it reads their name and date. I know there is a program to generate the QR from information you put in and then that's the QR you make

QuiltnNan 05-17-2014 04:48 PM

a very nicely done unusual 'not gift'

helou 05-17-2014 05:41 PM

Your comments make me laugh. Yes this is not a gift.... *wink

Right Dunster, I could have written “it’s about time” loll

I know! I don't own a "smart" phone but after reading about it here on the board, I ask myself the same questions: How do you read it, how do you make it Thank you ladies for inspiring me

so here are some links where I learn about it.
In this first topic, there is a link to “how to make a QR code” with (in step one) a link for a QR code generator, it takes an app for your smart phone to be able to read it. I borrowed my husband's phone. I had to see to believe it because otherwise, the 2 color squares and rectangles don't make sense, it is like a "modern" quilt pattern.

Thank you so much ladies for having inspiring me to try something new. Here some of them

This is really a neat idea!

This could be a whole new business for making quilt labels! How fun! Nice job.

I am making one right now with the URL of the Bible camp's website. This is the camp that does an annual quilt auction fundraiser, and I donate a few quilts each year. Justflyingin, a member of this board was helpful to me with tips for the QR quilt. I am about 1/3 done piecing now. My squares are 2" with a 1/4" seam. It should work up to about 40" square. My QR code works on paper, but I am holding my breath that it will be readable when I am finished and that I don't make a mistake somewhere piecing.

helou 05-18-2014 02:32 PM

I know what you mean when you say "I am holding my breath that il will be readable when I am finished" exactly!!!
so much concentration is needed to do this. I was some disappointed when it did not read at first. Then I realised that we need to put that pale border all around and completely finish the QR code block to get rid of that last colored 1/4 inch all around the block. Such a great satisfaction to see it "readable". I must have spent about 15 to 20 hours to make this 12 and 1/2 inches block.

QUILTNMO 05-18-2014 02:41 PM

that is really different idea good job!!!

redquilter 05-18-2014 03:40 PM

Very nice.

twinkie 05-19-2014 03:20 AM

That is a great "I'm not bringing a gift" gift.

solstice3 05-19-2014 04:17 AM

Admire your skill

gabeway 05-19-2014 04:22 AM

Way to go. Nice something.

helou 05-19-2014 04:52 AM

Thank you all
I made a mistake in my first post. I meant to write that it was 1/2 inch wide +the famous 1/4 inch seam. I hope and I guess you understood what I meant...

fangman 05-19-2014 05:43 AM

Very interesting.

quiltin-nannie 05-19-2014 05:51 AM

This just amazes me how this works!

letsquilt 05-19-2014 06:37 AM

VerY cool just read it with my iPhone, also went in and did a bar code with all my grand children's names, but question is how do I turn it into a grid to cut out squares for a quilt?

FabStripper 05-19-2014 09:28 AM

Oh I think they will love this; what a unique gesture (NOT gift). :)

MaryKatherine 05-19-2014 11:14 AM

Nicely done!

If you print it big enough so it fits a printer sheet of paper, you will notice that it is either squares or rectangles. I used a ruler and a pencil and traced a line from top to bottom on this piece of paper to separate it by square, dividing the rectangles into squares and drew lines all over the "pattern". So I could see better if some rectangles measured 1 or 2 or 3 squares in size. One square to me was my basic "value" then I did the same thing for each "line of squares" from one side to the other. It is easier to see and count how many lines you draw and count them and that gave me my "grid" to work from.

here it is on post #30 http://www.quiltingboard.com/picture...t203558-3.html

PS Stitcher 05-20-2014 07:04 AM

That is fantastic!! I think that I am going to have to try it.

helou 05-20-2014 08:02 AM

Thank you
that's it I "had to try it" loll

tessagin 05-20-2014 08:09 AM

This is a great idea.
