I started with some Moda charm squares from the Recess line and the Happy Camper line, plus a Happy Camper Honey bun. Then I started adding in a wide array of strips from my stash. The first photo is the blocks with just 2 "logs" -- it felt sparse to me, so I added another round.

Second photo is the queen sized pieced top, ready to be quilted. The arrangement is one that I've seen called crosses and losses, with the predominately red blocks forming crosses, and the yellow blocks creating a box. None of that was planned particularly -- I just played around with the blocks on my design wall until they seemed pretty balanced.

Now to figure out how to quilt it. I'll probably do a loose stipple, but I often get bored with that, and burst into random feathers and flowery things, which I'm not sure will be the best on this quilt. I don't like doing straight line quilting on such a big quilt. Quandry . . .

Do you have a favorite quilting treatment for log cabin blocks? Care to share?

I love how you've rearranged the blocks. It's amazing how much a change that made! I have no clue on the quilting design, but I'm sure it'll be great! Thank you for showing us your quilt.

When I saw the first pic, I said, "um, no too plain needs something".

Then I saw the second pic and what a difference. Nice job.

I am not usually a fan of scrappy quilts, but this is beautiful. I am sorry I have no idea on the quilting but I like you loose stipple suggestion.

Nicely done. I did a log cabin and used just a meandering pattern with hearts all over to quilt together. I had appliqued a small heart at the center of each block. Your is going to be beautiful!

pjustice63 09-11-2010 03:35 AM

This is a beautiful quilt. Log cabins are my favorites.
This is such a busy quilt, no matter how you quilt it the design will be lost. Any curved pattern will work well with all the straight lines. I think a large meander would look good.
Great work.

Beautiful quilt. It definitely looks much better with the changes. I don't have any ideas about quilting it, maybe circles?

PS Mrs Mel that blue log cabin reminds me of the ocean, very pretty.

Looks beautiful! When I was staring at your pieced top, it felt like an optical illusion. Sometimes the yellow blocks/red cross stood out to me, then it would switch and I'd be seeing just dark and light squares.

Beautiful - LOVE the color placement and layout.

I love organized scrappy and that what it looks like to me!

NICE JOB

jlong 09-11-2010 04:29 AM

I love it. It is by far my favorite log cabin!!! The colors and arrangement are beautiful.

Wow! I love the way the light hits the blocks. But, what a difference once they are put together. Beautiful job on this quilt.

Rebecca VLQ 09-11-2010 06:28 AM

That looks like a totally different quilt! How cool!

SueDor 09-11-2010 07:01 AM

Wow, just great!

Ditter43 09-11-2010 07:02 AM

I agree with everyone else....great quilt!! :D

grammyp 09-11-2010 07:03 AM

I have never quilted a log cabin. I sent mine out to a longarmer. But when I look at them, I like to see some curves to contrast with all the straight lines of the logs.

KarenS 09-11-2010 07:24 AM

It is beautiful. Great example of how changing the placement of blocks totally changes the feel of a quilt. Be sure to show us your finished quilt! I agree with some others that some curvy quilting would be great!

harvsstuff 09-11-2010 07:59 AM

Beautiful job its one of my favorite patterns. Very colorful. Love it
