Really spectacular quilt. Someone put a lot of work into that one.

Becka 07-19-2011 08:24 AM

Imagine the hours and hours. I wish I could see the back - I can't make out much quilting from the top. It does make me queasy as well. I'd need a steady diet of Dramamine and a safety harness to sleep under it. Is it my imagination, or do the pieces get smaller toward the middle, giving it that vortex illusion? Remind me never to do that on any of my quilts :) But the hours of work that went into this leaves me breathless.

I'm not educated in fabrics, and am super curious what doesn't look authentic about those used in this quilt. How can you tell? What do you look for?

Thanks, mtspools :) I found some similar for 1830 fabrics as well, both of North American and European origin. Since this was on a Swedish site (if I remember correctly?) perhaps the maker had access to more "modern" fabrics and patterns than those on this side of "the pond."

Now that I'm looking that much closer, there are some really gorgeous fabric patterns in this quilt.

blossom808 07-19-2011 08:47 AM

nice quilt..

FERSID 07-19-2011 09:23 AM

Quite a work of art - wonder how long it took her/him/them to complete.

Really, when you think of the material and time it took to do, perhaps $7200.00 is not too much to ask - but not in my piggy bank right now. LOL

katyquilter 07-19-2011 09:24 AM

I would! I'm surprised that's all it's going for considering the subject of it.

Thanks for posting the picture...it's beautiful!

bjnicholson 07-19-2011 12:42 PM

Beautiful quilt. I'm thinking that it was all pieced by hand and hand quilted if it's that old. It's worth every penny IMO.

The auction ended without a bit and I will keep an eye on it whether they will put it on again.
It only said 82 x 75", dated 1840 (?) and that it came from Todd county K.Y. USA

seems like it shouldbe in a museum

Carol in Colorado 07-19-2011 01:25 PM

Makes me want to put my imperfect quilts in a time capsule. Who knows that they would be worth some day. haha

It's a beautiful quilt, but it is not in my price range.

Barb44 07-19-2011 01:47 PM

Looking at the closeup, the fabrics in the stars look like they could be 1800's, but the blue border doesn't fit IMO. But I am no quilt historian, have just looked at a lot of repro fabric. I have not seen any blues that are that bright.

nstitchs 07-19-2011 02:31 PM

Imagine all the hours of hand sewing that probably went into that.

jljack 07-19-2011 02:32 PM

That's a gorgeous antique quilt! I love it! :-) Don't know what that would be in US$, but probably too much for me!! :-)

luce321 07-19-2011 03:08 PM

Beautiful, but way to expensive for me.

I think the price is set too high. Sometimes ebay sellers aren't very knowledgeable.

But I like it. She must have been a really good piecer. Can you imagine cutting out all those little pieces with scissors and even getting close to making the seams match and it not getting all puffy in the middle? I don't think I would have been so adventurous--I started one but didn't get it finished--just strip piecing.

I wonder if it really IS a Swiss quilt, or possibly it came from the U.S. somehow. The reason I wonder is I'm not sure the Swiss were into quilting back then. Part of my family is Swiss, and I think that accounts for the fact that even though they married into a family from West Virginia that I don't know of anyone in the family that has quilted in the past. (The Swiss girl would have been the one that married my g-g-grandfather and passed on her domestic skills to the next generation.)

BobbiSue2009 07-19-2011 04:16 PM

Absolutely stunning...and to think this quilt had to be hand stitched... I agree with grammiepamie. I also see a great depth to the star. I love working with the different star patterns but this one is well beyond my abilities! Whoever this lady may have been, my hat is off to her. She was a first class stitcher /quilter...

BobbiSue2009 07-19-2011 04:18 PM

Think I would rather enjoy mine here and now... LOL

hmmmm... I just realized that out side the major star pattern and especially on the outer sides of the quilt, she has done the block pattern. Interesting and beautiful to say the least.

ktmo815 07-19-2011 04:48 PM

OH !! WOW!! - can't afford it but it's really awesome!

Rainbow 07-19-2011 05:47 PM

Here I am struggling with a basic quilt like that ... CANNOT imagine the time and effort to make THIS ONE !!

Pam B 07-19-2011 05:53 PM

Well, it certainly is beautiful! I am wondering exactly what kind of verification there is that it is from 1840? I guess I just think the fabric colors would not still be quite so vibrant. I have a quilt (family heirloom) that does date back to 1876....ugliest quilt I have ever seen...but it is MINE!!! The fabrics in it are just not as vibrant as these. I think (as with lots of things on ebay) it is 'buyer beware'.

desertrose 07-19-2011 06:04 PM

It's a gorgeous quilt and I love the pattern. What surprises me is that the colors are still so vibrant and there's no sign of ware. Amazing! Have they offered any certificate of prove it's that old???
