Quilt Labels (my way)

1 Attachment(s)
Over in the Main Forum there's a question about Labels. I also use muslin and frame it out in the same backing fabric. Sometimes I trace special meanings out of a label book. I also sew it onto the back "before" quilting. It's almost impossible to remove in case of theft.

Cute label and hopefully theft proof!

Painiacs 07-03-2013 10:22 AM

Thats a great idea! I add the label after! Never thought of that! Love the labels! I also used hankerchiefs! already hemmed!!

QuiltnNan 07-03-2013 11:30 AM

Awesome label!

Very cute label and very good idea to quilt it on.

sandyquilts 07-03-2013 02:45 PM

Thanks everyone. I doubt any of my quilts will ever for stolen. If any should last 100 yrs then someone will know who, what and when. LOL

QUILTNMO 07-03-2013 02:51 PM

very nice i love to make my own labels also

tessagin 07-03-2013 02:54 PM

Love the label. My neighbor asked me to come over to look at the quilt her niece sent her to help her find the label. Alma is 90% blind due to diabetes. When she found she was going blind she studied Braille. God Bless her niece! She labeled the quilt in Braille with French Knots so it could be read. She had a friend help her with the French Knots who also knows Braille. Alma's niece also stitched in German the names of all those who helped work on the quilt. She hand embroidered along the quilt lines echoing the information. It's almost invisible because the thread is only about 2 shades lighter than the material. I thought that was very clever. So if you run across a quilt anytime that feels really nubby, it just might be labeled in Braille!

Diane007 07-03-2013 03:47 PM

good idea..............

Great idea and something I was looking for as I am currently making a baby quilt for a friend of a friend and wondered if I should place the label after the quilting or before. Question answered. Thanks for sharing. Bridget and I think it looks great!

Great idea!

zzmom 07-03-2013 05:41 PM

Creative idea! I like it.

joyce888 07-03-2013 05:43 PM

Very nice label.

MaryMo 07-03-2013 05:47 PM

thanks for the idea and suggestions .... I need them. I've found several quilts from days gone by with no label or an unreadable label, it would be so wonderful to have that part of the quilts story.

gabeway 07-04-2013 04:21 AM

Sounds great.

nice idea for a label. My MIL had over 20 quilts stolen while she was moving. They were locked in a storage shed. Someone broke it and took them. It would have helped if she had put labels on them.

qltgrose 07-04-2013 05:38 AM

I had heard about adding label before quilting. I have never seen one done, this is great! Also had a thought that not only would it deter a possible theft, but it will also SPUR the quiltmaker to actually label their quilt, since many leave that to the last thing and it often doesn't get done. I helped on a quilt registry project and believe me, when you are long gone, those who have your work in their hands would LOVE to have a label for them to know you better!

sandyquilts 07-04-2013 09:39 AM

You do need to plan in advance where to place the label on the back so it doesn't end up in the wrong place. I usually lay the backing down then the quilt top. I lay my label on the quilt top itself sticking pins in each corner which gives me a good idea where to place the label. I then use dots of Elmer's Washable Glue to hold the label in place, press to dry glue. Then I use my sewing machine to sew the label to the backing along the label border edge and then again just inside the muslin part. Hope this makes sense.

Your labels look great!

twinkie 07-05-2013 02:53 AM

That is a great idea

Now THAT is going the extra mile. What a thoughtful niece.

That's the nicest thing I've heard in a long time. What a thoughtful and clever niece!

Great idea. Nice quilt.

AZ Jane 07-05-2013 06:31 AM

I love creative labels, but it does take planning.

Wild8580 07-05-2013 06:51 AM

I love this idea. I have not been good about labeling my quilts. This method would encourage getting it done. Thanks for sharing.

matraina 07-05-2013 08:54 AM

Darling label. I wondered about adding before quilting but I was afraid (I was going to use much closer quilting) that you would not be able to read it.

laceybritt 07-05-2013 09:59 AM

Great idea!!! I still forget to add labels and I love to see everyone elses.

mighty 07-05-2013 01:26 PM

Awesome lable!!!!

shirleyd 07-05-2013 02:01 PM

Very nice label and creative. Thanks for sharing. I usually make my own labels but am always watching for new ideas. I bought a book of iron-on label transfers and am finding I can't seem to find a label in there that works for me.

This is such a tender story of a huge loving gesture. God bless that niece. I hope your neighbor gets to enjoy the quilt for a very long time! Diabetes is such a dreadful disease.

tildiemae 07-05-2013 05:34 PM

How do you figure out where to place the label before you start quilting?

solstice3 07-05-2013 05:56 PM

great idea!!!

QandE2010 07-05-2013 06:38 PM

Good idea for a label. And very cute, too.

CherryPie 07-05-2013 07:11 PM

Thanks for sharing. Love your label...I'd heard about doing your labels that way. I think that's a very smart way of doing it.

Sandi 07-05-2013 09:25 PM

Yes that label is extra special in my book and an inspiration as well. Thanks for showing it to us

sewmom 07-06-2013 05:14 AM

Is there a proper place for labels or is it quilter's choice? I usually try to place mine in the bottom right corner on the back, but sometimes they end up on the left side. Once I put the label part way up the side because the backing had a repair close to the edge and the label covered it nicely. I like the ones I've seen across the corners too. I used my built-in letters to sew the name and date into the binding on my reversible quilt and I have seen the label stitched as a block and pieced in the quilt also. I figure as long as it's labeled. It's good.

rebeljane 07-08-2013 01:40 AM

I machine stitch my quilt labels into the binding on two sides, then hand sew the other two sides
