Yes, I quilted Kay's masterpiece on my longarm machine. The button plackets were about two inches wide and I did not quilt up close to the buttons so they posed no problem when quilting.

Since Kay prepared the shirts and pieced the top I don't know how she made the borders. But here is how I would have done it.
1.After cutting the sleeves and backs from the front of the shirts, button the shirt fronts and trim 1/2 inch on either side of the placket. Set aside the buttoned plackets for use in the borders.
2. After the quilt body has been pieced, measure for the border lengths. Sew the plackets together to fit the borders, use some spacing fabric between the ends of the plackets if needed to get the correct lengths. Attach the border plackets to the quilt body as you would any other borders. Quilt and bind as usual.

Hope this helps a little.

What a timely thread this one is for me. As I type, I have a shirt on the floor by the coffee table to take apart. I have already anihilated about six of them and faithfully taken off all the buttons and thrown away the button strips . Now, I know better. What a novel idea and wish I had come upon this idea earlier, but now I will save those button rows.

Cute and a great and clever way to repurpose.

Just promised a memory quilt

I just promised a 'shirt' quilt to a friend whose husband just passed two weeks ago. I have been thinking, trying to decide what to do.....thanks to your post, I am closer to a plan. Love the plackets border.

Very clever and nicely done.

Some of the prints in old shirts are wonderful. I have been known to throw in a women's "man tailored" shirt too because they can have a great print design. I just wish I had kept all those work suit blouses from the 80's! Love your quilt.

Elaine433 03-22-2012 04:49 AM

That is a perfect "men's" quilt. I find it so hard to make a quilt that is manly looking. Great job. Love the buttons.

I am so glad that you posted this! Last September a dear member of our church passed. His daughter has approached me about making quilts from his shirts for his family. I did not know where or how to start this project. Now, thanks to you, I do! I think I will use the t-shirts as well in the solid blocks. I know they will have to be stablized before cutting and sewing. Now, I can go forward, I am so happy you posted this! Thank you and I love that quilt!

Who would have thunk it? Great looking quilt.

Thank you for posting this. I am a new quilter and lost my husband in October 2011. I have cut up a few of his shirts and still have a stack to do. I have saved some button plackets and pockets. This gives me some great ideas for later when I tackle this project.

cat2quilt 03-22-2012 11:42 AM

Nicely done!

The Nine Patch and Snowball blocks made up very nicely for a man's quilt. We chose Hobbs 80/20 batting and custom quilted it with continuous curve on the nine patch blocks and echo stitching on the snowball blocks

May I ask what this pattern is called for the main part of the quilt?

Thanks!

Becky, The main part of the quilt is pieced with alternating nine patch and snowball blocks.
