Quilt rescued from flood

When I saw our house on the 24-hour news channel during the 1996 Saguenay flood, the only thing I could think of was “the water is not going in”. That was just hopeful thinking! We were 300 miles away from home that weekend when 9 inches of rain fell on the region. In our basement, was my grandmother’s flower garden quilt I was making for my daughter. I had been working on it for 6 months. A quarter of it was finish with a little bit more than a thousand ¾ inch hexagons joined by hand. When my husband got to the house after the water receded, he went looking for my quilt and finally found it under my ironing board (we can still see a rust stain from it on a yellow flower). He was so happy to bring it to me even if it was ruined. I washed it and worked very hard to get the soil out of every seams. I always kept it as a souvenir. Last year, I showed it to my guild and they convinced me to do something with it. I rearranged some flower, took some out and did a blanket to put over the shoulders when the nights are cold. Because we were away, I had one hundred white hexagons that I basted in the car and I kept them too. Those were still white!! I made some more hexagons from my stash and made a little wall hanging that I call Burst of color. I had one UFO and now thanks to my friends at the guild... no more UFO!
PS you can see from the picture of the basement that I am a knitter too!!
