Quilt rescued

5 Attachment(s)
Last week I went to a thrift store looking to see if they had anything
I might find interesting enough to drag home (last time I went it was
a HUGE desk for my sewing room).

It was so sad to see this handmade quilt there, it is machine applique,
and hand quilted not a "tight" hand quilting more like a running stitch
around the appliques and borders.

I sent an email with photos attached to my FIL and Louise (not me, but
the other Louise in the family step-MIL) to see if they wanted this quilt
for the cabin, the theme of this quilt is perfect for what they have in the
cabin. But with Louise you can never tell what she will or will not like.

At any rate I felt compelled to rescue this quilt, and give the original
quilter (wish I knew who it was) the respect they deserve by appreciating
the work they put into the quilt.

I purchased this quilt for $3.00 (50% off day).

This quilt has been cat scanned and approved by my "Mr. Dude" aka Gizmo.

I love it and the kitty seems to also!

nativetexan 12-22-2013 01:50 PM

Oh my, I'm not sure you will get that quilt away from kitty. it is a wonderful quilt, just right for a cabin as you say.

JenniePenny 12-22-2013 02:00 PM

The quilt is very pretty and I'm glad you took it home.

MaryMo 12-22-2013 02:01 PM

Did it have a label? Some quilter may be a bit disgruntled to learn that her/his hard work ended up this way. Thank you for saving it!

grannie cheechee 12-22-2013 02:15 PM

Thank you for saving the quilt. Someone put a lot of work into it.

bjrusty 12-22-2013 02:18 PM

Good for you Barb

MacThayer 12-22-2013 02:32 PM

It doesn't look like a difficult fix, so you got a GREAT buy! However, I don't think you're going to get it away from the cat so anyone else can have it. LOL!

Quilty-Louise 12-22-2013 02:44 PM

Yeah you are correct about me getting the quilt from the dude.
The last picture with him looking at the camera was when I asked
him if he planned to get off the quilt so I can wash it.

I think his reply was no because he proceeded to curl into a ball and
go to sleep. Last time I went to the bedroom he was still sleeping on
the quilt. Or maybe it would be better to say sleeping UNDER it as my
hubs flipped the corner over him and it didn't even disturb him.

Jackie Spencer 12-22-2013 06:28 PM

Great save on the quilt, and your fur baby is beautiful!!

Girlfriend 12-23-2013 03:20 AM

Mr. Dude is darling. I've never seen a black and white cat with a pink nose. i love the way he's looking at you.

Amazing find on the quilt. Makes you wish the quilt could talk.

cowgirlquilter 12-23-2013 03:44 AM

Your quilt inspector has the right idea.......this is a wonderful quilt!!! So glad you rescued it.

Quilty-Louise 12-23-2013 05:16 AM

Actually he is not a black and white cat.
He is a snowshoe (half Siamese), with blue eye that are crossed.

Snowshoe cats if you click on this link will give you more info about
what a snowshoe cats are, and the picture they show is what Gizmo's
colorings looked like a couple years ago (the picture is NOT my cat,
but the coloring of this cat looked exactly like my Gizmo).

Great save.

Wonderful rescue!

quiltstringz 12-23-2013 07:44 AM

Man I would have thought that $5.99 was a steal and no way I would have left it there half price day or not. You got a great bargain.

fred singer 12-23-2013 07:57 AM

awesome find indeed like your inspector ,too

TnBecky 12-23-2013 08:01 AM

So sad that someone would throw out such a beautiful quilt, but lucky that you saved it. People just don't realize the love & thought that goes into a quilt. It is a beautiful quilt. If your In Laws don't want it it looks like Mr. Dude would like you to keep it. :D

Quilty-Louise 12-23-2013 11:55 AM

M FIL loves the quilt, as the theme on the quilt is the same as the
cabins living room decor.

I call it a cabin, but in all honesty it is a 5 bedroom A-frame house
built by my husbands grandfather over 25+ year time span.

feline fanatic 12-23-2013 12:05 PM

Good save on the quilt but I don't think it is a handcrafted quilt. It looks an awful lot like the quilts found in big box chain stores that are made in china. Especially when looking at those big roughly done quilting stitches and the way the edge is finished (no binding that I can see, finished like a "birthed quilt" also known as a pillow case finish). But still very cute and a great bargain at only $3.00.

Floralfab 12-23-2013 12:23 PM

What a wonderful find. Kitty seems happy with it too!

Quilty-Louise 12-23-2013 12:43 PM

I inspected this quilt closely before I purchased it.
It is indeed a handmade quilt.

The applique stitching is not even enough to be a store purchased
quilt. Also the hand stitching around the trees and other appliques
are not evenly spaced.

Plus last night I discovered there is a hanging sleeve pocket on the
back.

Sadly though there is no label on the back.

I think you should have asked Gizmo before you offered to anyone else.

Great save by the way. I have two that I use daily that were being used for wrapping items that they were taking to the flea market to sell. They weren't even for sale. I bought a chair and ottoman and they threw them in for free. THEY were the true treasures. I don't even have the chair and ottoman anymore. I figure they aren't with the original intended owner, but they are loved and used, just as they were intended to be.

nygal 12-23-2013 12:53 PM

It reminds me of when we lived in Alaska!

Jingle 12-23-2013 02:04 PM

Beautiful quilt and cat. I would rather have my quilts end up in a resale shop than in the trash. That way someone that wants them can buy them.

Retired Fire Chief 12-24-2013 03:56 AM

It's a lovely little quilt, how sad for the person who made it. But Gizmo really appreciates it!

callen 12-24-2013 05:47 AM

What a great save & I just love your kitty !!

2manyhobbies 12-24-2013 05:54 AM

What a sweet piece. Great save.

rosiewell 12-24-2013 08:20 AM

Lucky find, it is beautiful and so perfect for a winter day.

tessagin 12-24-2013 08:27 AM

I would certainly look for it. My neighbor taught her niece to quilt when her eyes were better. Now the niece uses French Knots for Braille. But all of their quilts have labels on the front worked along side the binding and throughout the quilt. She has labeled inside a Dresden blade and GFG quilts and even a scrappy on diagonal. She has labeled on paths and flower stems. It's fun just to look for the labels.

Oh what a find for what $3.00?? How could you walk on by. At least its now cat scanned and passed inspection and ready to move on. Does your cat have frequent flyer mile??

twinkie 12-24-2013 02:19 PM

Definitely worth the rescue

caspharm 12-24-2013 04:59 PM
