Quilt from scraps
1 Attachment(s)
I don't do scrap quilts normally, though I have many, many in my stash. Most of the time I am too anxious to begin the next project and am tired of looking at the fabrics I have used in that quilt to turn around and make another. I am also too OCD to just throw random scraps together and usually sew from a pattern exclusively. After finishing my latest, seen here: https://www.quiltingboard.com/pictur...r-t311940.html I had 198 - 2 1/2" HSTs left from doing all the rather large flying geese. I knew if I didn't do something with them immediately, they would remain in a drawer, along with all the remaining scraps of background fabric etc. Out of my comfort zone, I started putting stars together, then pinwheels.
Here is the finished quilt, all scraps except for an additional yard of background that I had earmarked for a pillowcase.....and surprisingly I love it, scrappy and all. It will be backed in Minkee with a gray binding. Attachment 627103 You can see the 5 different background fabrics pretty easily in this picture. It finished at 53" x 61" and is ready to quilt. |
This is beautiful!

That is such an engaging quilt! I like the different sizes of blocks seemingly scattered, and the figures on the background fabrics contribute something intriguing to the whole design. Really nice.

Pretty top!

Did you use a pattern or design it yourself?
If you designed it, it's a pattern I would consider buying. Love it! DH liked it, too. |
Thank you for your compliment bearispray. It is just made with 2" and 4" finished pinwheels, and 8" stars made of the scrap 2 1/2" unfinished HSTs. The stars are laid out in a 3,2,3,2,3,2 layout (or 5 x 6) with the adjoining 8" blocks made of 2 - 4" sqs., 1 - 2" sq. and 1 - 2" x 4" rectangle of background, 1 - 4" pinwheel, and 1 - 2" pinwheel (all finished sizes). By rotating the adjoining blocks you can get the scattered look of the pinwheels.

I love this quilt, pinwheels are a favorite. I never would have guessed this was a pattern made from scraps. Really like the grays you used for background and all the bright colors.
|
Beautiful quilt. Love the design, colours...everything.
Can't wait to see the finished quilt. |
Beautiful quilt, Nana! Love the colors and the different neutral backgrounds.
|
Beautifully done...my favorite kind of quilt with those bright & cheery colors. Great way to use up your scraps Nana.
|
What lovely scraps put to good use in a bonus quilt. The narrow inner border is entrancing and really adds to the theme of color and coordination with the pinwheels. Lovely, lovely use of your leftovers.

https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/heart.gif You created an awesome quilt with your scraps! I love the varied background fabrics. It looks like you had a wonderful time and the quilt will hold fun memories from the original quilt from which the scraps originated.

Beautifully done...So bright and cheerful!

When I 1st started making quilts, scrappy was out of my comfort zone until I tried one of Bonnie Hunter's pattern....Pineapple Blossom. That made a change in how I viewed scrappy. Now most of my quilts are a scrappy version or a controlled scrappy version. Love to see what I can do with leftovers, fat quarters and whatever I can find in my stash as I'm not buying any more fabric till I downsize what I have..................and that won't be for some time to come. Haven't bought fabric since November 2018 except 3 fat quarters to finish a quilt I had started beforehand.
Love your scrappy quilt, so bright and cheerful. Can't wait to see it quilted now. |
what a great bonus quilt!
|
That's a great quilt. I love scrap quilts and that looks like you planned it just right.
|
Lovely quilt.....I love scrappies!
|
Wow, what a striking quilt! And I love the scrappy background fabrics.
|
I love it! This isn't my idea of scrappy - it looks well thought out and planned, just so bright and cheerful. And I don't usually like scrappy. I might just have to borrow your idea.
|
Beautiful top. If you do Facebook look up “scrap Quilt Enthusiasts “. Lots of great scrappy quilts!
|
You did a marvelous job - and it looks very planned out. I love using what I have in my stash. Maybe its the old farmgirl in me that I want to use what I have and save up for a rainy day. And those half squares pieces and triangles are always an issue for me.
Great job |
Very pretty quilt. Well done
|
I love your beautiful quilt! It is a very happy and fun piece! The co-ordination of color and design is pure harmony - You have used such pretty srappy combinations of color along with a well suited and complimentary scrap background.
When I do scrappy projects, I can't let go and really agonize over the decisions of placement to make it all complimentary. Great job! |
Great quilt! Love the bright and cheerful look.
|
It's quite striking with all it's colors. Love it.
|
It is a beautiful quilt and it looks like you planned every detail of this wonder! Even the different background fabrics that you pointed out look like the plan was always that pattern. I am impressed! Thank you for sharing this beautiful quilt.

That is just beautiful! I love the multi-colored border. 👍

Beautiful Quilt Nana. I love the bright colors and use of pinwheels and stars. You did a lovely job using your scraps into a one of a kind quilt.
|
I just love this quilt. I see you have a few directions on how you did the block and then turned it to get the layout. Would you mind showing a drawing with the sizes of blocks that makes up this large block you have turned different ways. This is a very impressive quilt. I have been preparing to make a bunch of HST from my stash. This would just be perfect.
|
Very nice! Great use of those scraps!
|
Your quilt from scraps looks anything but random or like a "leftovers" quilt! That looks great, organized, and well thought out! I think you did wonderful!
|
I love your quilt!
