This is a quilt top I just finnished from a 30's block swap, for some reason my final border is a little wavey?? Any help as to what I did wrong ??
Top came out beautiful!! As far as the wave I am wondering if it has something to do with the difference in the give of the two different materials?

Not sure, was thinking maybe it's the vintage 30's fabric???
You may want to ask your quilt inspector-he seems intent on it :-)

The wave just adds character to your wonderful top.

I'm too inexperienced to be able to help with the border, but I do like your quilt top. Very nice! Looks like someone else likes it, too!
Your quilt top is so pretty!! :D Nice work.
Thanks ladies, yes my yorkie desided he had to walk on it??
Did you measure across the middle of the quilt and not the edge? If you measured the edge instead it could make your border wavy.
Try measuring across the middle and easing in where needed to make it fit. I always heard that's what needed to be done but naturally I had to learn the hard way. lol |
I love your quilt top!!! :D :D :D
I'm way too new to quilting to offer any guesses, but I do think it is very pretty!
Very nice.
With regards to the borders being a bit wavy, try pressing them with steam and starch. They should behave better. I'm going to assume you had the border fabric on top, as you were sewing them on. The extra weight of the quilt top hanging down below your sewing machine created a stretching effect on the quilt top, while the border fabric was not stretched at the same rate. This will cause some slight waviness. Also, check that the edges of both fabrics remained even and the seam is a consistent width. |
It is a beautiful quilt.
Looks good to me.

What a beautiful quilt. Love the layout.
In regards to your border you have received some excellent suggestions. I would only add to divide your quilt side and border both into quarters and then match the divisions so any easing that must be done will be done gently the full length of the quilt. When I cut my borders I usually just lay the quilt out and put my border on top in the middle from side to side and then trim them to fit. Works a charm for me. No measuring tape necessary. But some people recommend that you do measure your quilt top in three places and then average them three measurements for the length of your border. Have I totally confused you yet? Bottom line - just keep practicing. Your next quilt will have fewer waves, I'm sure! |
Very very pretty! Lets just say the waves gives it "movement" :)
I cut either way depending on the length that I need, I never have had wavy borders.

That is beautiful. I love the colors and fabrics. Great job.

Here are 2 links explaining your wavy borders. This has happened to me before.

It's really pretty! And the other suggestions about the wavy border are spot on. Good luck!
Your quilt is beautiful! I want to make one like it.
I do like Yvonne does. But I have a BIG table made just for cutting fabric & pinning borders on. I lay my top out on the table, put my border face down on it & pin A LOT! I trim off the end of the border. And my borders are always cut on the width of the fabric. No problems. We do longarm quilting & get a lot of friendly(wavy) borders. We try to give advice & information, even have the ladies over to show them how I do them. Then, we do our best with the ones we get. LOL Linda |
Beautiful.
i'M NOT SURE ABOUT THE WAVE, BUT THE QUILT TOP SURE IS A BEAUTY
Very pretty
That is SO pretty! I love your color choices!
I love this quilt! I think everyone answered questions about the wave....I think yours is fine and once you get it on the long arm and stretch it out it will be fine.
Very pretty!
Thanks everyone, I appreciate all your help & tips.

All of the advice given all fits together when doing borders. One other thing my grandma taught me was to measure thru the center of the quilt and both sides and average the 3 measurements. Do this for both sides, top and bottom. Your quilt will lay so much better.
Have joyous holidays. :-D |
I love your top!!
Did you measure the border and cut it to size or did you just sew until the border ran out? It does stretch if you don't measure and make it fit rather than just sew border until you get to the end. I use to do that and had wavy borders.
I measure through the middle side to side - mark center and side to center on both sides and mark - match marks and pin - sew on borders top and bottom - press towards border - measure length top to bottom through the center - mark and pin as above - sew borders on and press toward borders. Makes non-wavy borders. I hope it works for you.

The quilt was REALLY wavy ... I measure the middle ever since <g> |
I forgot to say:
It is a beautiful quilt and the waves will quilt out, usually <g> |
I love your Quilt and everyone has givrn good answers for the boarder,..I bet it turns out fine once you quilt it.

I always learn new things here! Great tips on getting borders not to wave. Your quilt top is gorgeous. Do try to fix your friendly (wavy) borders. It shouldn't take too long. I just had one quilted and below is what happens. I'm hoping it won't be too noticeable once the quilt is bound and washed.
