Quilted bath mat

1 Attachment(s)
Here is one of the projects that I worked on this week and finished yesterday. I cut up a bunch of 2 1/2 inch squares from my scrap pile, the white squares are from my DH's old shirts. Sewed them together and quilted it to an old bath towel that I cut to size. I then added a scrappy binding. I love my new bath mat!

I love it! Was only thinking today that I need to go through the linen cupboard and pull out the ratty towels. This is a great idea and I really need some practice FMQing so may be just the thing. Thanks for posting your beautiful bathmat and inspiring us to recycle.

I am thinking of making quilted beach towels. I love this bath mat and it was so easy to make. A wonderful way to use up scraps.

very nicely done. i have bath mat on my bucket list... you've inspired me to get going on it.

catladyquilts 02-10-2013 04:18 AM

what a wonderful idea, we all have "those" towels in the linen closet, now we know what to do with them.

lisalovesquilting 02-10-2013 04:20 AM

What a great idea! That's what I call recycling.

I love this idea and will give it a go, surely it would dry faster than a rug....
I saw a great idea for a beach towel in a mag last year, carolaug. I was planning to make that, too. But I think it called for purchasing the terry cloth. Don't see why you couldn't do the same as for this bathmat. Thanks so much for this as I surely could use the practice FMQ, too.

GREAT idea for some of these old towels I have in my linen closet! I love your idea & your bathmat!!

Lisa_wanna_b_quilter 02-10-2013 05:26 AM

I've been thinking about this, too. Thanks for showing up that it works out so well.

My plan has been to try tubmling blocks on a bath mat. If I don't go crazy, I can do an whole quilt. If it's too much work, a bath mat shouldn't kill me.

IngeMK 02-10-2013 05:38 AM

great idea

red-warrior 02-10-2013 06:04 AM

A great idea. I saw a magazine article a couple of years ago that said that making quilted bath mats was very popular in about the fifties. Maybe this is the way can actually get one to fit my odd space.

The towel was already like that - looks like its FMQ'd. I just sewed a decorative stitch on throught the white squares...all flowers - its a long stitch on my machine. Once top was made it took about an hour to stitch, and bind the top to the bath towel. This is a really fast, fun project. My hubby loves it. Feels great on the feet.

carolaug 02-10-2013 06:38 AM

i love how she sewed the feet...that was really cute. Thanks for sharing!

Love this idea! Repurposing and practicing FMQing at the same time. Plus you get a cool new bathmat. Or kitty blanket. Or dog mat. Or ..... GENIUS!

busy fingers 02-10-2013 11:45 AM
