This is a magnetic bowl from the automotive department. They have them at Walmart. They have a smaller version at quilt shops for more money. I have another for my regular quilting needs.

I use them too. My first one DH got from one of those bargain bins at a local hardware store. Ihave 3" and 6" versions. Most of mine come from Harbor Freight.

Yes, these are great! I even have one on the ironing board and it hasn't fallen off yet!!! Love them!

Another, prettier one is the base from Glade oil 'candles'. I'll check out the automotive dep't. That one looks strong.

I got one that came with my LA. I love it. I'll have to check the auto dept. to get more. Can never have too many.

Now why haven't my grown mechanical children given them to their quilting mother?

I to have several different size one...on the smallest one I put velcro on it and wear it around my wrist when pinning my tops to my long arm...never do they fall out....

I got mine from Harbor Freight. The magnet is strong enough that I found a needle laying in my skirt once. And I can pick up pins of the floor as they'll jump a half inch or so to reach the bowl. I'll never use a pin cushion again.

Holds the thimble, too.

I got the set from TSC and it was on clearance. 4.99 for ! large oblong one and 2 small round ones. they are definitely strong magnets. I use all three at the sewing machine. 1 for my seam ripper, scissors, etc. 1 for pins and the other for stuff that I might need like bobbins fully loaded for machine. They hold onto the hinges on my machine table.

I have one from Sears.

I saw these on a quilting website and about died laughing. I've been using one for years when I work on my truck, it holds my bolts screws and tools. My Dh thought it was pretty funny too, and they cost more when you put the quilting label on them. LOL

I have one that came wit my LA guess Ill have to check out the odd dept to get anotherone (you cna never have to many magnetic pin cushions!!!)

I MUST get one for myself. No, I need two of them. One for putting pins in directly and one to attach to a handle so I can 'sweep' them up from the floor.

If there were a competition for dropped pins, I'd be the champion, no doubt about it!

Deb, I have one too and am always recommending them to people. You can pick them up on sale at Harbor Freight quite often. If not they are available at many other stores.
They have a nice rubber gasket on the bottom so they don't scratch your work surface!!!

Cathy, you can sweep across the floor with the bottom of the bowl and it will pick them up too.

I'd love one of these but don't trust myself. I'm afraid I'll forget and put it too close to my machine.

I'm not sure if this is fact or fiction, but I heard that having a magnet close to computerized machine can be detrimental.
That said, I have the magnet and have found it to be a lifesaver when I have spilled all my pins on the floor. To be safe, I keep my magnet a healthy distance from my sewing machine.

Love these things. I have several laying around at different places. Got a couple from Harbor Freight & then found some for $2 at a closeout store. Also got the magnetic telescoping wand for those pins I drop

It's true if you have an electronic machine. Don't get them too close to your machine. I have one of the magnetic wands that I use after I'm done sewing to pick up pins but I keep it in the closet and only bring it out when I use it.

If you have a sewing machine that has lots of electronic programs in it you need to be careful using the magnets close to the machine. Supposedly it can mess up a machine. Other than that those magnetic pin catchers sound like a great idea.

That was the case years ago when computerized machines first came out. They now put protection on machines. Ask you dealer about it.

I got mine from Harbor Freight also. They are perfect when you're taking apart machines and don't want to lose any of those teeny tiny screws. Learned that the hard way...one small 1/4" screw cost me $10+shipping to replace :thumbdown: :thumbdown:
