I've never used a seam guide before--I like it! My original plan was to go both ways--a matrix--but I'm kind of liking it like this. It shows movement (doesn't it?). IF I had planned on going only one direction, I think I would have gone the other way...too late for that.

If this was yours--would you leave it as is or add the other lines of quilting so there are squares on there?

Thanks!

PS--now I see neat circles on there I never saw before. How'd that happen? The quilting?

MamaBear61 05-09-2010 08:08 AM

I like it right now. Do you have a leftover block you could try quilting both directions on to see how it impacts the look? It would be awful to add more quilting lines only to decide you liked it better before.

Tippy 05-09-2010 08:19 AM

Quilting can bring out lots of stuff you didn't see before.. It's very nice the way it is.. but I'd do both ways. I'll bet you'll see even more designs coming out.

barnbum 05-09-2010 08:23 AM

Oh gosh-it's a tie. I'll have to wait for more replies, or I could ask my sister when she comes over tonight--it's for her.

MamaBear--I have more blocks, but I'm using them in the next top. Although, I checked wall space and I have no room, so I won't be in a hurry to make the next one.

Candace 05-09-2010 08:28 AM

I like it as is. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". :>

patricej 05-09-2010 08:32 AM

leave it alone. it's fabulous as it is.

Quilter7x 05-09-2010 08:32 AM

I love how quilting it in one direction gives it movement, but I wonder what it would look like if it was quilted in both directions. If the block isn't hard, would it be worth it to use some scrap fabrics to do one up and then quilt it both ways to see what it looks like?

CajunQuilter2 05-09-2010 08:38 AM

I say it is awesome the way it is. Good luck deciding

Maride 05-09-2010 08:40 AM

I like it this way too. Did you use a walking foot to do the quilting? If you go the opposite direction you could get small puckers where the quilting seams meet. It looks great now.

barnbum 05-09-2010 08:51 AM

Oh yay--majority of votes say leave it. Oh--the possible pucker predicament--that's a great reason to skip the other way... and the idea I might not like it if I do. Eeek. So--leaving as it, I am, I am. :-D

Thank you one and all for stopping to give me your opinion!

I did use the regular foot--not a fm foot--because there's no where to put the seam guide thingy on the fm one. Once I got the feed dogs back up and the slippery mat off, I was ready to quilt. Oh the goof-ups I do. They'd make a great comedy.

Now to figure out my binding idea...

RedGarnet222 05-09-2010 08:56 AM

I would go both ways. The washing would distort it unless you even out the quilting. Just use a walking foot and take care to press it before you start the second set of quilting lines.

Yvonne 05-09-2010 08:56 AM

I have to add my two cents.

A few years back I made a fall leaves quilt for my step-daughter. The pattern called for one direction quilting, much like you have here. The idea was to give the impression of the wind blowing through the leaves. I think that's exactly what you have going with your quilting right now. I vote to put a binding on it and call it done!

Beautiful! As always!

nativetexan 05-09-2010 09:08 AM

I would leave it.love the movement look now.

ToucanSam 05-09-2010 09:09 AM

Leave it, it looks great!

Jim's Gem 05-09-2010 09:13 AM

I like it like it is!!!

amma 05-09-2010 10:38 AM

I love the movement in the quilt as it is too :D:D:D
I think I like it better going in this direction... it really makes the quilt flow with the colors, the other way it may look like it is fighting against them, JMHO
Your sister is going to LOVE this!!!!

Pam 05-09-2010 12:33 PM

I have seen the circles all along. Sometimes when you look at it another way, different size, upside down, sideways those interesting seconary designs pop right out. I was suprised you didn't see them in person.

Now if you make one for yourself, you can quilt in the circles and highlight those!

I think I never looked at it from a distance and I was always focused on the color changes... and since that part is done, my head had room for other ideas. I love your circle idea!! When I finish the 2nd--down the road a bit--I'll ask for more on that idea. But--I can only quilt simple stuff...so unless it mean quilting around a dinner plate, it may be beyond my capabilities. :-D

craftybear 05-09-2010 02:03 PM

beautiful, thanks for sharing and love seeing the circles

Pam 05-09-2010 02:41 PM

Barnbum, I would still do the SID quilting, but just along the circle lines, that would make them pop right out.

redquilter 05-09-2010 03:20 PM

I would leave it just the way it is. It's fantastic.

spinnergs 05-09-2010 05:55 PM

The quilting will depend on the batting, if the spacing of the quilting doesnt require more, your set, otherwise you will have to decide.

sewingladydi 05-09-2010 06:34 PM

Looks great to me as is

Kara 05-09-2010 06:56 PM

I like it as is.

But, yea... where'd those circles come from??? I don't remember noticing them in other pictures of this.

It's beautiful!

littlehud 05-09-2010 08:38 PM

I would do it both ways.

gaigai 05-10-2010 02:05 AM

I like it as it is, Karla. I think it looks as if wind is blowing the leaves along. Do the next on the opposite direction, and I think it will look as if the wind is blowing the seasons through! Then you and your sister can fight over who gets which one! LOL

It looks great! Good job! Now, when you get a minute, go smell some lilacs for me, please!!

Sheree from Chicago 05-11-2010 07:14 AM

It is fantastic just the way it is!

bstanbro 05-11-2010 08:17 AM

I like it as is. I generally prefer things to be asymetrical.

ann clare 05-11-2010 11:34 AM

It is beautiful.

kwiltkrazy 05-11-2010 03:40 PM

If it were mine(only in my perfect quilting dreams), I would leave it. Its perfect.

Aww--I'l talk you through making one! It's not hard--and it's small... you can use my EQ6 plan... give it a go.

OH my, you don't have wall space? Well, I'd be glad to let you use some of mine. I have plenty to share

MaryAnna 05-11-2010 03:54 PM

too many cooks spoil the pot, and too much quilting spoils the quilt. It's stunning as it is, leave it as is. It's stunning.
Kind Regards,
MaryAnna

Cute idea!!! I haven't made the second one yet... I think this one will go to sis... if she has wall space. The more I look at it--the more I like it. :-D

No way is another stitch going in there--well, only to hold on the binding. hee hee

Gilla 05-11-2010 04:02 PM

Many times I look at something and decide to fix it. Well, when I get done I messed it up and should have left it alone.

It is nice the way it is.

judygym 05-11-2010 06:06 PM

I vote to leave it. It really is gorgeous and doesn't need any more quilting. It could definitely be overdone.

penski 05-11-2010 09:30 PM

my vote is to leave it the way it is, love the colors you chose !!!may i ask the pattern name of it ?

barnbum 05-12-2010 01:45 AM

It's a Kaleidescope pattern--I cut the pieces using a kalido-ruler--or something like that--I'd have to read it to get it right. I designed the color arrangement myself. The pattern is supposed to have alternating lights/darks to give more circle effects, but I wanted to try something different. If you search for "Kayak" you'll see a quilt I made varying the colors the way it's supposed to be done... this was a different idea.

Quilt4u 05-12-2010 01:46 AM

Leave it. I love it this way. Beautiful.

978gray 05-12-2010 03:48 AM

I like it just as is. It feels like it moving. Love the effect.
