My husband had a lab that was boring, no color except at the front. Quilts geared to astronomy and to his interests were the answer.

The first has a photo of Venus in transit across the sun. A lady put a digital camera in front of his telescope lens. She was kind enough to e-mail some of the photos. I chose this one then dyed and over dyed fabrics to go with it and made him this quilt

There is a tiny dot of black on the lower right side of the sun. That is Venus

Because he teaches physics and has engineers, I thought a impossible traingle would be good

This is called an exploding star. Actually it was the first quilt I made for the lab

This last one features a frame that was inspired by Bob Ross. It is a whole piece of cloth underneath. Neon paints were used to highlight the center section so that your eye went right to that area. My husband is a scuba diver.

Love geometric patterns

Those are fabulous quilts. I love the way you incorporated the science aspect of it. The Churn Dash impossible triangle quilt is brilliant.

I have a couple of friends who are professors/Phd's in the mathematics dept at a major university. I've "borrowed" a couple of the images from their work to make quilts (currently WIPs).
Hurts my head to understand the mathematical theories but I can interpret the images into fabric. ;-)

I'm thinking string theory, etc.

Wow. How did you do that impossible triangle? Was it purely your creation or based on something else? I love it (and all the others but especially the impossible triangle)

I have seen an impossible triangle but it was just cubes so I added the patchwork. Nothing like making it harder. it was only placing the colors. Remember we have to have light med and dark in each block then we have to have lights med and dark sides to the cube

drgntatoo 08-29-2011 05:54 PM

All are just great...but I could stare at the impossible triangle all day!!

Quilted Horse 08-29-2011 06:11 PM

Super fantastic. I'm sure all who enter that lab appreciate the new artwork. That first one is awesome, but I am really intrigued by the impossible triangle. I have never seen that before. Very cool!!!
