Quilts with doilies

3 Attachment(s)
Someone asked me to post photos of what I`m doing using doilies. I`m not very good at resizing and posting so hope I got a few in. So far I`ve made 4 and am working on my 5th. One is in red and was quilted by Charisma for me. I made a peach one for her. I added doilies to my embroidered ladies . That one is not quilted yet. I`m also working on a new one which is all in blue(well except for the doilies) . If the photos haven t all gone through I will try and post more on this thread. thank you for looking!!

Wow, you have shown me a whole new way too look at crocheted doilies! You really show them off beautifully in your quilts and you have found some really unique and beautiful ones. So how do you adhere them to the quilt? Do you just top stitch around the edge or do you stitch along the insides in strategic places as well? I suspect every application is different, kind of a stitch as needed. Did you also hand embroider all your bonnet ladies too? Beautiful and so very different. Well at least to me. I have seen many bloggers quilting with antique linens so maybe there are a bunch out there that do this as well?

lynnie 09-26-2017 01:04 PM

BEAUTIFUL WORK!! you did an amazing job on these quilts. what a wonderful idea. Love all the handwork in them

huntannette 09-26-2017 01:09 PM

Thank you so much !!! I do top stitch around the edges and a few strategic places as you said but I do glue them down a bit using a glue stick first. The embroidered ladies were done by my mom.....we have been working together to make quilts. She does the handwork and I set them in a quilt after. I do also use vintage embroidery to make other quilts as I`ve seen online. There are so many thrown out embroidered items out there. Hard to believe so many people discard such amazing work. I collect everything I can find and repurpose them in quilts.

Oh my goodness! They are exquisite! I'm in awe of your talent and Charisma's quilting. Look how she echoed the doilies! Amazing quilts.

quiltingshorttimer 09-26-2017 04:30 PM

those are so "stinkin' cute"! What a great, creative idea to use those stacks of doilies that some of our g-mas had everywhere. Thank you so much for posting--I plan to do wallhangings for my sis and bro for Christmas using a picture of our folks (both deceased) as the center and this has got my brain spinning with ideas!

BrendaK 09-26-2017 04:47 PM

They are gorgeous! My favorite is the red/pink one. Makes me wish somebody had kept some of the doilies that my grandmother made. Or my mother-in-law. Thank you for sharing your beautiful work!

All of them are absolutely beautiful. My Mom use to crochet doilies . The ones I had I gave to my Daughter. She will keep them forever.

These are stunning!!

ptquilts 09-27-2017 03:55 AM

Such beautiful work, and lovely quilting as well! Back when I was younger (cough cough - 40 years ago) I would buy hand work like these at the Salvation Army for 10 and 25 cents each. I came across a lot of pastel linen, and tacked some to the linen to make pillows. Also made pillows out of dresser scarves etc. They were very popular.

red-warrior 09-27-2017 04:04 AM

I love your creativity!! Thanks so much for sharing!

pocoellie 09-27-2017 04:14 AM

Beautiful quilts. I was saving some doilies picked up at thrift stores and yard sales, with the intention of making a quilt with them, but decided I would probably never get around to doing it, so, I gave a friend the doilies, maybe I should ask for them back. LOL

Tartan 09-27-2017 04:22 AM

Great quilts and a wonderful to preserve all the lovely work from bygone days!

SusieQOH 09-27-2017 04:27 AM

Someone gave me an idea on using antique hankies, which I've collected and sit in a drawer- thanks for the ideas!!!

pal 09-27-2017 04:40 AM

You have certainly opened up my eyes. You are a true Artist. Amazing. Thank you so much for sharing your talent.
AWESOME!!!!!!!!

countrymaid 09-27-2017 04:42 AM

I am in awe of your work. I too have a box from DH grandmother. She made afghans but many times would test the pattern in a small block first to get her scale and determine what yarn or bedspread cotton to use. Thus pieces that are smaller than 6x6. This is a wonderful way to preserve her work. I have a number of large antique picture frames that would showcase her pieces. I forget you don't need a lot of something to preserve an item of great meaning. I do have one of my grandmothers tatted pieces mounted and framed. Thank you for showing your work.
