Quilts You Don't Love

2 Attachment(s)
Javin22 posted a thread to the board http://www.quiltingboard.com/picture...e-t253315.html and it made me think about quilts I've made that the vision of what I had in mind, didn't work out. A couple of years ago, I did the Bonnie Hunter Mystery Quilt "Easy Street." I can't say I hate it, but something about it doesn't work for me. My fabric choices are off and too close to the same tone. I love Most of Bonnies's quilts because I like scrappy, but I don't think I will do another mystery. I need to see a finished quilt to pick fabric. Bonnie gives paint chips as clues to her color choices, but most time her choices are way too bright for me. Here's my I don't love quilt. I would love to see some pictures from my friends on the Quilting Board of your quilts you didn't love when they were finished.

Helene Knott spoke at our guild meeting this week on this very subject. Her theme was "color theory" and she showed some very interesting examples of taking the same colors and the same block and rearranging them. The results were so interesting. She showed an Amish quilt that had gazillion little squares, all the same pattern, but with different colors. The variance in color value (mostly) made a huge difference in the overall effect of the pattern. We can lay out our colors/swatches and say, "Oh. . I like those together." But then we must decide how to distribute them to get the desired effect.

I love the deep, rich colors of your Easy Street.

I really like your quilt but yes, I have had made quilts that I wasn't real crazy about....seems someone would come along that did like one and then they ended up with it. Thankfully tastes aren't all the same.

pojo 09-11-2014 08:34 AM

I think your quilt is beautiful.
I love the colors.

Susanna10 09-11-2014 08:38 AM

I think it is a beautiful quilt. Maybe it just isn't the colors you like.

QuiltnNan 09-11-2014 08:44 AM

it's a great quilt... nicely done

Homemother 09-11-2014 08:59 AM

I think this is a testament to our personal tastes. Your quilt is not one of your favorites, but I, along with others, really find the colors in your quilt beautiful and satisfying. I am making Bonnie's Celtic Solstice right now and I am not thrilled with my color choices at all. Someone else will think it stunning!

I understand why you wouldn't make another mystery quilt. I always wait to see what they look like before investing the time and fabric into a project, since both of those resources are limited. I also go way too slow to keep up with them!

i like it sometimes we are too critical of our own work!!

I think your quilt is GORGEOUS! You want to see something not to love. A green Trip Around the World that I named "Peace" (made a red one calle "Passion") Did not care for either one when they were done. Actually they never got done. I gave both tops to my sister and she recently donated them to the Salvation Army. I wasted a lot of time and fabric on them.

cathyvv 09-11-2014 02:48 PM

It's very pretty! However, I agree too many darks together keep it from being outstanding. But someday someone will fall in love with it and treasure it.

cathyvv 09-11-2014 02:49 PM

I love the red one! So sorry that these wound up in the Salvation Army. I hope they made some quilter happy, though.

boston1954 I feel your pain. I laughed when you named your unloved quilts peace and passion. Someone may take these home and quilt them and love them. Thanks for sharing.

Boston1954 09-11-2014 04:22 PM

I am hoping that they will each find a person who loves those colors.

nannyrick 09-11-2014 05:16 PM

I like it and your quilting is beautiful!!

heather1949 09-11-2014 07:18 PM

Wow beautiful, you did an awesome job.

gabeway 09-12-2014 04:27 AM

When I first looked ar it, I thought it a little flat, but seeing the closeup, I think it is beautiful.

hildie 09-12-2014 05:02 AM

I really think it is great. I like the colors you choose- they are right up my alley. I really like it!

I love your quilt. I made one for my DH I knew I was going to be disappointed with it. It was just not my style.

Monale 09-12-2014 06:35 AM

Personal tastes really vary... Boston1954, I think your red "Passion" quilt top is beautiful! :) (I am normally really into greens, but I have to say that the patterns and colour values in the green one don't appeal that much to me...)

hairquilt 09-12-2014 07:51 AM

Movement is what it lacks to me! The more movement I can get in my blocks I seem to like better!

#1piecemaker 09-12-2014 07:54 AM

Very pretty!!! You've been busy!! Great job!

Wild8580 09-12-2014 09:22 AM

Quilt4u, the question is, did DH like it? Is it the pattern you don't like, the fabric, the colors? I think it looks like a mans quilt. I actually like it.

BrendaK 09-12-2014 10:08 AM

I love it. You did a great job. If you want someone to take it off your hands I am the girl. Be happy to sent you my address. I also love all the other quilts that were shown. BrendaK

I would like to take a class on quilt design theroy. There is so much to think about when making a quilt besides accurate sewing. Color selection and color placement, and movement (what is that and how is it achieved). This venture is so expensive and time consuming it's so disappointing to make a quilt you don't like. I too am not going to do another mystery quilt because of the difficulty of choosing fabric withough knowing how the pattern looks. I've just finished one and will be modifying the first three rows because I don't like the way the colors blind with the other rows. I'm enjoying these posts and ideas.

misseva 09-12-2014 11:52 AM

I agree, your quilt doesn't suit you. It does, however, suit me. I'll send you my address if you like. Beautiful.

We all have one or more of those here is mine, just can't stand it for some reason. I gave it to someone.

double pics? oh well twice the ugly, lol

QM 09-12-2014 12:46 PM

Fortunately, you realize what you don't like about your quilt. Of course, a top you don't care for can always be a back.

annpryor 09-12-2014 12:49 PM

I am also watercolor artist so I use the color wheel for my quilts,

pokeyscorner 09-12-2014 12:58 PM

I too have made a mystery quilt I didn't like. The choice of colors was lights, mediums, & dark's. BUT my lights ended up being too close to the background fabrics. So they disappear into the background & they were supposed to be star points. It remains on our bed & my DH loves it. When doing a Bonnie Hunter mystery you could use a toned down version of her colors or collect all the instructions & do it after you have all the instructions. That's what I've done with her last one. I am color challenged I think.:o

Jinny is that a stack and whack? Never tried one of those. The color doesn't grab me. Is that what you don't like?

pokeygirl 09-12-2014 01:46 PM

Wild8580...your quilt is beautiful!

KARENBOUTQUILTIN 09-12-2014 01:53 PM

Isn't it amazing at the differences in our taste and color combinations. I dearly love everything about this quilt!

I made this OBW a few months ago from some striped orange/pink/peach fabric I received in a swap. I didn't have enough of the fabric to make the quilt as large as I wanted, so I added some borders. When it was finished, I decided I didn't care for it after all, but couldn't put my finger on what was "wrong" with it. I finally just slapped a price on it, and took it to the craft fair along with several of my other quilts.

Guess which one sold! LOL! ;) :D

Cathy77 09-12-2014 02:09 PM

There are quiet a few quilts on here that I really like! (Yes, I'm also talking to you, Wild8580! I love the autumn colours!)

I decided right when I found out what a mystery quilt are that those aren't for me! I'm picky when it comes to choosing a pattern for my quilts and there are many that just don't appeal to me somehow!

The quilt I don't like I made is the one I'm calling "Falling Waves":

That is so funny, Moonrise.......I was reading this thread and thinking it's the old Goose vs Gander thing....what one person hates, the other loves. I don't see an ugly quilt on this thread, at all.....:)

Caswews 09-13-2014 03:46 AM

Well I happen to like your passion quilt !

DH loves it. He was the one that picked out the pattern and the colors. I love the batiks. But the pattern not so.

anothernancy 09-13-2014 04:52 AM

I have been known to use my seam ripper and take one totally apart to save the materia for a redo. I also LOVE your quilt.
