It IS gorgeous! thanks for sharing!

katcox 09-13-2011 09:20 AM

I think it would be worth the blisters, love the colors.

Sibi 09-13-2011 09:21 AM

I made a rag quilt the same size as yours and trust me, I understand where you are coming from!! I thought I would NEVER finish snipping those darn seams! It is sooo worth it though when you're done. :-)

Just a question, how do you prevent all the unravling on the raw edges from clogging up your washer?

Well............I've been told that rag quilts should be washed at a laudromat the first time or two to prevent costly repair to the washing machine, but I'm hard-headed so I put it in my machine at home and was shocked at how much debris was floating around in the water, so I got a strainer and a bowl and proceeded to skim all the floating fibers from the water. I kept resetting the timer so it wouldn't start draining before I was satisfied that there wasn't much trash left. And I did it again in the rinse cycle. I skimmed out a bowlful of lint. And that was after I ran it through the dryer several time so the lint trap would catch most of it and had to clean that out every five minutes. That process did not go as well as I'd hoped. My brother in law is an appliance repairman so I knew who to call if I had a problem, but he's not cheap, even for relatives.

Do NOT wash rag quilts in your home washing machine the first time. Do NOT!

I have run another load of clothes through and it worked fine but next time I will find a laudromat for the rag quilt.

Just beautiful! You did a great job. I have made several of the big ones, but used the Accuquilt Go machine rag cutter. It pre-cuts the fringes for you. Easy and fast. Love your quilt!

romanojg 09-13-2011 10:09 AM

Very pretty. The snipping is why I use the accu quilt; makes life a whole lot better (and faster)

romanojg 09-13-2011 10:13 AM

I've done a few and never had a problem with my washer getting clogged up.

georgia 09-13-2011 10:27 AM

really pretty

MargeD 09-13-2011 10:50 AM

It looks beautiful, you did a great job. I haven't done one yet, but if I did I'd get the special scissors to snip the layers, as they are supposed to be easier on your hands. Nice job.

Jingle 09-13-2011 10:53 AM

Absolutely beautiful, great colors and great job. So worth the blisters and time spent on it. Good for you.

skydiver70 09-13-2011 10:56 AM

Wow! That is pretty. You did a wonderful job. I did a full size quilt with both sides being flannel, but my squares were about twice that size. It does take a lot of cutting, but well worth it after the fingers heal. Thanks for sharing.

Rag snippers were the first thing I bought when I started planning my rag quilts. What a labor saver!!! No blisters either. BTW, your quilt is really pretty. I love the soft colors and it ragged beautifully. I'm sure you're glad you did it. Thanks for sharing.

quilt gramma 09-13-2011 12:19 PM

My first rag quilt i made was lots of work clipping the squares and then i went and bought the proper rag snippers to make it . Have made 3 quilts now and alot easier but your hands still get a bit sore ..

Janice Thompson 09-13-2011 12:23 PM

Very pretty. When I made one out of denim, I clipped as I sewed. Made the same mistake and clipped after I had put together

nannygoat 09-13-2011 12:42 PM

Wow! Beautiful work! I have made 4 rag quilts, never one this large but I really like them. Beautiful colors too!

bjrusty 09-13-2011 12:46 PM

that is one rag I really like. Great work lady. Barb

Love Rag quilts!! The spring loaded snipping scissors is the way to go in clipping them. Much easier. Of all the quilts I have given away, the ragged quilts are the most loved and used. That makes me happy. I made one queen size for my adult grandson (at his request) and he loves it. ;)
Your quilt is beautiful and the fringe is really nice.

Your quilt is beautiful. I love to make rag quilts. My DH does the clipping for me. I'm sooooo lucky. I bought him the rag quilt nips. He loves them.

Grama Chris 09-13-2011 12:53 PM

GREAT JOB :) I also made a rag quilt (flannel) for my GD, chk it out. I made them 10" sqs w/9" batting or you can use flannel. I invested in rag quilt scissors & they are to die for. You DON'T prewash the fabric but when you're done put in washer/dryer & vwala' fringe between & sooooo soft.

Phyllis42 09-13-2011 01:28 PM

Nice looking rag quilt. Accuquilt is great for cutting the blocks AND fringes.

These charms are mostly from Fig Tree Quilts' Gypsy Rose collection by Moda from about 3 years ago, might be hard to find now, but I mixed in some from other collections because I was running short.

Thanks Jeanelle, the colours are beautiful.

Very pretty.

TexasSunshine 09-13-2011 04:24 PM

Very nice, I use the snips also but do a little at a time, then stop, rest, do something else and come back to it. Also I get DH to help, he doesn't mind.

I made one of these awhile back, but before starting, I purchased those rag quilt scissors. that made the snipping so much easier becuase of the way they are constructed. Beautiful quilt, but I imagine it being very heavy also.

These are supposed to be easier to use than scissors. I have a quilt that's supposed to be clipped along all the seams, too. I haven't take the spring-action grippers out of the box, yet. . .
