I made this for my mom last year just before she was having chemo treatments. Well all she "wanted" was the squares sewn together and the ugly backing put on it. I do not like this quilt it is so off and she lovenly calls it "What did I do to deserve this?!?" Or "In the beginning" I would love to redo this quilt what would you suggest. I will add some more fabric to it make it a little bigger and will add some minky fabric to the back she says it is too cold. So what pattern would you use??

dunster 12-11-2010 03:27 PM

I think it is absolutely GORGEOUS just like it is.

Sadiemae 12-11-2010 03:29 PM

I would just add some borders if you want it bigger and quilt it. I love the bright colors!

QuiltnCowgirl 12-11-2010 03:30 PM

I'm seeing some black sashing & borders to make all of those gorgeous colors pop! Maybe black minkee or fleece for the backing?

Quiltforme 12-11-2010 03:34 PM

I like the black sashing how big would you make the sashing?? Jade

What size is it now? What finished size are the squares? How many rows of each?
I guess too it would depend on what size you want the finished quilt to be? Do you have anything in mind? Let me know & I'll play with it & see what I can sketch out for you. If you want that is :)

Quiltforme 12-11-2010 03:41 PM

it's a lap quilt right now not that big maybe 60x60 would be great!

amma 12-11-2010 03:42 PM

Maybe just applique the quilt to a bigger piece of Minky? Center the quilt in the center of it and let the minky be the borders? :D:D:D

QuiltQtrs 12-11-2010 04:35 PM

I would just add a 2 1/2 - 3" solid black border, then a "Piano Key" border
of all your scraps, and bind it in black. The colors will really pop!
It is simply gorgeous as it is.....

nlgh 12-11-2010 04:57 PM

I agree with everyone. The quilt is very pretty as is. Just add borders to make it bigger. I like QuiltQtrs suggestion.

Oh this sounds so pretty!

irishrose 12-11-2010 05:41 PM

Does your mother like red? I can see it with a 1" black sashing strip to make frame the colors, then a 4" red - maybe a blender - as a final border. Bright blue or turquoise would work, too. Yellow might look like a bumble bee. Got to have the black with those colors. I'd bind it with the second color. With the colors in the quilt, it doesn't need a busy edge.

Iluv2quilt 12-11-2010 05:43 PM

I really like this one, I don't think I'd change it beyond adding some borders to it. The minky is a great idea, I really like minky, soooo soft and cuddly!

dsb38327 12-11-2010 05:45 PM

I agree with your Mom. It is an awesome quilt like it is. If you want it larger I would agree with adding to it but otherwise I wouldn't change a thing. I love it like it is.

Moonglow 12-11-2010 05:46 PM

It's beautiful and bright. Just add some borders to make it larger. In this case 'less is more'.

montanajan 12-11-2010 05:53 PM

I'd keep the borders simple, maybe an inner border of black then outer border a blender of one of your favorite colors already in the quilt so the beautiful quilt stands out as it is. Lovely colors - I like bright!

MaRanda 12-11-2010 06:04 PM

Love the idea of black to make things "pop"!

Tootsie 12-11-2010 06:06 PM

Here's another vote for black borders. It really is so pretty now, and the black will show the bright colors off. Good job!

elsieirene 12-11-2010 06:14 PM

It is very pretty. I agree a black border would be pretty.

watson's mom 12-11-2010 06:22 PM

I love your quilt just the way it is. The colours are very rich looking. Excellent!

Jingle 12-11-2010 07:10 PM

It is gorgeous and bright I think black borders would frame it quite nicely and you could make them as big as you want, until you get it the size you want it to be.

Tropical 12-11-2010 09:36 PM

I agree about the quilt. I love that it is so colorful. I'm sorry to hear that your Mom had to have chemo treatments. Is she ok now?

Could someone please explain what minky is? Thanks.

Fayelh 12-11-2010 09:46 PM

I love the colours just the way it is.

Sheila Elaine 12-11-2010 09:57 PM

Yes, black & red borders will be awesome.

wildyard 12-11-2010 10:22 PM

I love the colors too, and I agree that a narrow black border is called for first. However, after that, I seem to veer away from everyone else. I think anything black wider than a 2" border would be too much. Even tho I love the bright center of the quilt, for borders, I would go calmer so as not to detract from the middle. If this quilt were for me, I'd love to see the 2" black border, then a 3" medium pink border followed by a medium blue border of 4.5 or 5". A black binding would tie it all together. I would pick the pink and blue from the center of the quilt.

I've not used it yet, but my understanding of minky is this - a soft, luxurious feeling fabric with depth that is sort of like fleece but much "richer" feeling. Anyone else have a way to offer a better description; mine isn't quite right.

Connie Merritt 12-12-2010 06:09 AM

This is one beautiful quilt and it shows the hills and valleys that your mom feels. If it were me (and I know its not)I would not change anything. It makes me feel as if you mom's feelings are in this quilt and perhaps it is her healing "blankey" (I surely pray so) to shelter her from harm. Good luck and many prayers for your mom and for you. You are a thoughtful daughter wanted the best for you mom.

eiltcoq 12-12-2010 06:36 AM

gorgeous quilt. I assume they are made with 5" charm squares. What is the name of the fabric? Do you have more squares? If you do, a narrow border in black as a 'frame' and then more of the squares around the quilt looks nice. Just my thoughts. Thanks for sharing. Eiltcoq.

fancifrock 12-12-2010 07:21 AM

The quilt is lovely as it is. Trust me it will make her smile during her treatments which is what she will need. The pattern doesn't matter at a time like that, it is the smiles that it will give your Mother. My prayers are with your Mother and you during this time.

What is the saying- Great minds think alike? my thoughts exactly and the colors will look like they go together.
I bought Minky from this store and they have tons to select from http://minkydelight.com/

hikingquilter 12-12-2010 07:57 AM

I agree with the black borders to frame the beautiful colors. I can see why your mom loves it the way it is. It's so cheerful!

DoxieMom 12-12-2010 08:00 AM

I agree with QuiltQtrs!!!

This sounds good to me too!...The minkey on the back will definately make it warmer!! I think it is very pretty now....can't wait to see it when you finish it AGAIN!!!

peppermint 12-12-2010 08:10 AM

I agree with every one on the borders. To make it bigger you could do a border and then another row of square. It has wonderful colors to pull from. Good Luck

Quilter Day-by-Day 12-12-2010 08:11 AM

I love it!! I would only add a couple of borders to make it bigger.

busygranny 12-12-2010 09:52 AM

Mothers always love what their daughter makes...thats how we are!!!! I would also just add a black narrow border with maybe a 3-4" solid color border. You could even use a batik fabric. Older people like bright colors so don't take that away from her.

Lady Jane 12-12-2010 10:13 AM

I think it is beautiful! Lots of color

annieshane 12-12-2010 10:15 AM

I really like this bright quilt. I would just add borders and quilt, to me that is all that is needed.

SewExtremeSeams 12-12-2010 10:20 AM

Well, Jade, I think it is lovely. How big is the quilt? The colors look so rich.

What is it you don't like?
