A nice quilter in my town gifted me a large bag of her scraps and unwanted blocks. I sashed and backed them with my own fabric and spent the last 3 days doing tight FMQ and quilted, embroidered feathered designs in the four corners of each block. I still need to hand stitch the back of the binding and throw it in the wash to "shrinkify" it. :> The quilt isn't my colors, but will make a nice gift for someone. It's fun to take other people's "trash" and turn it into a treasure. I've got one more small quilt in the works from her blocks. So, to any quilters out there that have blocks they don't want...don't chuck them. Give them to someone to make use of! Yes, the points in this one weren't perfect and the blocks needed some help...but, I hate to see someone's hard work go to waste. Hope you like it:>

I love them and love the feathers too! I have some I will never get to, but they are a bunch of random sizes ect...usually from swaps ect...So if someone wants I will send...they are very random though.

Have you ever considered sashing the blocks to get them the same size and then putting them together? I plan on doing that with some antique blocks that are not the same size. I also received these blocks in the bag of scraps she gave me. It was like Christmas!

That is a great quilt. It's going to find just the right home & someone will love it. You made a great sacrifice in saving this quilt.

That is a great quilt. Even if you don't like it someone else will. And what a wonderful way to work on your quilting. Yours is wonderful by the way. I want to try feathers too.

It's an embroidery design, so the main talent required is placing correctly and hooping. Though I did have to make a few samples to get it exactly how I wanted it;>

Great job!

I was wondering too! There is an Elk Grove in Illinois as well (but I don't think we have elk).

You mean you hand embroidered the design on the 'back'. You had to have a quilt frame to hold the quilt. Is there tutorials on how to do this embroidery, because all I do is tie the quilt and than sew along side the blocks through the three pieces and that comes up with a squared off or whatever design on the backside. Of course, my quilts are family gifts so whatever I do has to do .... for lack of room to have a huge quilting frame here.

The quilt is a lovely quilt. I done a few quilts for an order from old dresses and blouses that a guy had stored and wanted to do something with as they were his mother's clothes and it's a memory quilt.

I am now parked near the Sacramento River and where the Feather River come together. Just North of Nicoluas. I know where Elk Grove is located. Cold here this morning 45 degrees.

That is a beautiful top. Do you free motion quilt? I am hoping to take lessons at the "Sew Sew Shop" in Marysville.

No, I mean it's hooped and the feathers were machine embroidered. I did do the FMQ myself on my machine, but the feather designs are a straight from the machine. I hoop the quilt, position the design and it stitches out:> Sewing machines with embroidery capability are awesome! I just showed the backing as the quilting is more visible. Next time I'm going to try 40 or 30wt. thread as the feathers don't "pop" as much as I'd like on the front of the quilt.

Yes, I like to FMQ. It sounds like your parked at a nice spot. I bet it's pretty scenic. I think it will be high 70's maybe even hit 80 today, so perfect weather! I've never been to the Sew Sew shop. Is it a quilt store?? If so, I'll have to drop by some day. Marysville is probably an hour drive for me, so I don't get there often.

crafterbarbara 05-07-2010 06:54 AM

Sew Sew is on D St. It has been there for over 45 years. They have classes on knitting, crochet, sewing and of course quilting.
Really great paper piecing class I took several years ago. A sitting room where you can bring a project, meet with others and receive assistance if you want. Or just a place to visit.

Our son put in a full hookup spot for us here when he built his home 9 years ago. It is really nice for mom and dad to come and visit. We are full time travelers, try to come at least once a year.

Candace 05-07-2010 07:08 AM

THis store sells fabric, then? Uh oh :>

charismah 05-07-2010 07:13 AM

I think you did a beautiful thing..giving this quilt life!

crafterbarbara 05-07-2010 07:15 AM

Oh yes, beautiful selections, and such nice clerks.

cmsmith46580 05-07-2010 08:02 AM

oh to have a embroidery sewing machine. Once I get all my bills paid off..... I can do soooo much with embroidering .... my goal/dream for later.

crafterbarbara 05-07-2010 11:54 AM

I have so enjoyed my machine. Keep the dream, watch Ebay there are some very good buys.
