Perhaps some of you from chat remember, that Red 16 point star I've struggled with for months. (Shadow Dancer, I'll bet is the most sick of hearing about it) Well the quilting is nearly done and I figured out that if I stand on a chair and drape it over the couch I can photograph it.
It is nearly a king at 101" by 102" It is to be a Christmas present for my mom, I have just a couple more hours of quilting and then the binding. I don't know yet if I will use the muslin backing to bring forward for a traditional Amish style binding or if I will use nested prairie points for the binding. I've been using a quilting guide for this one and it's working out quite well. Many many less lines to draw. |

Thanks Loretta, it's been a long time comming. I had to put it completely away for nearly a month because I was so mad over it. I tried to make it for her birthday at the beginning of this month but I reinjured a rib that I'd broken in my accident 8 years ago and couldn't move to baste the quilt let alone quilt it. So she got the little pillow instead.
The story behind the quilt is that when my mom saw the finished baby clothes quilt top (the quilt in my avatar) she spread her hands out over the star in the photograph with the pillow and said, "I want one of these". I'm certain she has no idea why she got a pillow for her birthday. I think it will look wonderful on her bed ontop of the quilt, all inspired from that day. The original star was made from a pair of faux velvet pants with little ruffles and the white from a little one piece romper. I didn't have enough material to remake it the same, so the new pillow star is the red from her first Christmas dress, and the white from her newborn oneies that her daddy bought. My first machine sewn buttonholes |
Oh and the white on white of the the quilt label and the white on white of the pillow back are the same fabric I used in the star. I love how it all ties together.

I really think your quilting sets it off perfectly too. Give yourself a great big pat on the back    |
truly a work worth finishing, just saying that's it beautiful does not do justice to this extraordinary quilt. The visual impact is astounding and your workmanship is amazing.

Oh Elizabeth, it is beautiful and worth every moment you spent flustered over it. I'm beginning to think that if I don't get all flustered and it is too easy..then I've done something wrong that I'll find out about later...sometimes much later
Your Mom is going to be sooo surprized and will love that quilt. I know I do! Great job! That new machine sure came timely and seemed to work really well for you! |
That is beautiful. I'd love to see it flat--but I understand it's too big. :D
You have lovely penmanship. |
ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!!!
|
Thank you all, your kind comments have made my heart sing. (and I've needed a bit of that as of late). My plan is to give it to my mom at her house so it can be spread out on the bed it will hopefully live on often. I'll do my best to remember to take the camera.
Am I crazy? I feel like telling her she has to have her glasses on when she opens it. I'm planning on folding it into the box inside out with the label on top, so when she opens it she will see right away what it is. |
Very Nice.....love the colors being so bright and cheerful
|
What a beauty, love the red and white. You have put so much of yourself into this quilt, your mom will treasure it.

You have done an awesome job!!! Worth all the pain-both physical and mental! A true treasure. |
Oh Elizabeth, it is so absolutely gorgeous! Your Mom will love it for sure!!! Thank you for the story about how this came to be. I've often thought about your mom's unkind remark to you about the other quilt, and so to hear that when it was finished she told you how much she loved it was soooo good to hear.....you Mom will treasure this quilt for sure :)

Im sure it is worth all the hard work and trouble you have had.. |
Red is my favorite color. Can you spread it out so i can see the whole quilt?
If mom does not like send to bebe!!!! FABULOUS :D :D :D   |
What a gorgeous quilt! You Mom will love it. I'm interested in how you did the label. Was it machine embroidered or an iron on? Getting close to being finished on a couple of quilts and I'm looking for ideas how to label. I've never included them before and thought it's about time I start.
|
B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L!! Your quilting is perfect.
|
This is incredible. I am an absolute sucker for red and white or red and ecru. I would love to know where you got the pattern. This one will be passed down for generations I am sure.

Bebe I'm sorry there is no way to show this quilt any other way, it took me nearly a month of trying to get it spread out the way it is for the shot. I simply don't have the area inside my cozy house to take the photo and with all the white I'm not comfortable taking it outside. My mom is really into things being "clean" and I wouldn't want to mess it up. In fact the image you see is the first time I got to see it spread out myself even though I was working on it.
quiltsRfun The label. I ironed down 1/4" or so down behind then I pinned the heck out of it and sewed on top with a decorative stitch (it looks sort of like stars/snowflakes). I have also sewn a label right sides together on interfacing ,cut the interfacing flipped it right ways out, ironed on and sewed the edges. I love a good blanket stitch for getting things like that. Mrs. Mel the pattern is called Wintergraphix I found it some months ago and one of the ladies on the board was kind enough to print out the pattern and mail it to me (thank goodness I had that). Oh and I doubled the pattern... http://www.inthebeginningfabrics.com...tergraphix.pdf |
Thank you Elizabeth, I am adding it to my file. :D
|
Beautiful! I love the different reds!!!
