Release the Hounds (tooth)

I finished this top tonight and boy it made my eyes cross! The diagonal squares were tube pieced and cut on the 45 degree bias. I did the quilt math as I was falling asleep one night. My method was sound, my math was not, (oops!) so I ended up cutting a lot more squares than I originally intended. The overall top is 48"x72" (4'x6') with 4" squares. Thankfully I overbought fabric. I'm pleased with how this came out but I don't know that I'll do it again soon. There was a lot of ease in these seams for the points to match up. :p No worries about God squares, there are plenty! Thanks for looking!

Beautiful!! A real eye-catching design. From a pattern, or your own?

trivia42 08-30-2013 10:49 PM

Thanks, I saw a finished one somewhere (pinterest maybe?) and did the pattern on my own, which is where my math gave me fits.

quiltsRfun 08-30-2013 10:59 PM

Beautiful! And I can see why it made your eyes cross. But you managed to keep everything in order.

Great quilt!!

QuiltnNan 08-31-2013 03:43 AM

great job... i really like the design and colors

QuiltnNan 08-31-2013 03:49 AM

as i look at it more, i think the pattern would make a great border on another type of quilt, too.

Eye Catching and looks super, love it in red & white! I always think houndstooth as black/white or dark blue/white. I love patterns that appear to be tessellating designs (is that redundant? :-) )
Thanks for sharing

Awesome quilt!

Annz 08-31-2013 05:31 AM

Very striking colors.

craftynell 08-31-2013 09:08 AM

Love it. but it makes my eyes go crazy.

QuiltnNan 08-31-2013 09:11 AM

did you design the pattern yourself or did you find the pattern somewhere? could you please let us know where we might get the pattern? thanks

Tartan 08-31-2013 10:24 AM

Very cute! I can see how it would be tricky to piece.

dunster 08-31-2013 10:24 AM

Such a mesmerizing design. It is beautiful.

paulswalia 08-31-2013 10:27 AM

Does anyone else see Batman heads in this quilt? It's delightful!

oh munner 08-31-2013 11:24 AM

If yo google "free hounds tooth quilt patterns" there are several sites that come up.

tessagin 08-31-2013 11:29 AM

Wow, it's super!

barny 08-31-2013 11:34 AM

I love your quilt, but if you go back and forth across it, it does make my eyes cross. Like ironing a striped dress.

serenitybygrace 08-31-2013 01:05 PM

Very nice quilt. I have never seen this pattern before. I really like it.

Tweety2911 08-31-2013 01:40 PM

This would leave me cross-eyed!! You did a super job!!

michelleoc 08-31-2013 02:03 PM

You did a great job with this, and I'm impressed that you did your own math (that in itself would have had me moving on to another project!)

feline fanatic 08-31-2013 03:09 PM

Fabulous quilt!

pattypurple 08-31-2013 03:13 PM

Tula Pink demonstrated this on a Sewing with Nancy show. I wrote down the sizes of the blocks and tried it. I agree with the crossing eyes. Your colors are great with this pattern

Grandma Peg 08-31-2013 04:38 PM

Very nice quilt.

trivia42 08-31-2013 07:07 PM

I didn't google it, I should have. It's three blocks, a white solid, red solid and diagonal stripe. I tube pieced the diagonal with alternating red/whites. Jenny Beyer has a good tute for tube quilting at MoStar Quilt Co. Here's where my math was off. I wanted 6" squares and thought I'd use 2" strips and get 6" squares (2- 1/2=1 1/2 x4 strips=6)... or not when you cut on the bias. I still don't quite know how to figure that out to get a 6" square but I ended up with 4.5" squares so I had to cut down the solids and create quite a few more squares of both solids and stripes. I was going to do 8 blocks across and ended up with 12, the same with 12 down and ending up with 18 blocks. The blocks are actually pieced exactly the same and then one stripe is rotated 180 degrees over so the points match which made it easier. I chain pieced almost all of it.

Very striking! Beautiful quilt.

Retired Fire Chief 09-01-2013 04:00 AM

It certainly is eye catching, I think I would get cross-eyed. Wonderful design.

alikat110 09-01-2013 04:29 AM

Grwat job, even if you had to adjust for math challenges...are you going to border it?

hudgoddess 09-01-2013 05:04 AM

I bet you did a lot of double checking and worrying when you laid out the blocks and sewed them together! Nice job!

I like figuring out patterns and adjusting them for my needs too. I have a genius IQ, a college degree, I used to do my own accounting, and did taxes for several years. Why does quilt math reduce us to wimpering imbeciles?

Could be, but what I see is rows and rows of kitty cats. Great quilt, great job.

twinkie 09-01-2013 05:24 AM

That is an intriguing design. It does challenge the eyes but sure looks difficult to me. Great job.

JANICE E. 09-01-2013 06:13 AM

I can see how you could go cross eyed with this pattern. But it turned out really nice

#1piecemaker 09-01-2013 06:14 AM

Very nice!! You did a great job!

1screech 09-01-2013 07:28 AM

It looks like rockets waiting to take off.

quiltingloulou 09-01-2013 07:32 AM

This look great. You have done it well.

MargeD 09-01-2013 10:55 AM
