Remember 87 and Still Quilting?
4 Attachment(s)
Last yr. I shared the story of my 87 yr. old cousin who had to move into a nursing home (same one my Dad resides in). She was and still is their only resident with a sewing machine in her room. She told me of her wish to make a quilt to use up the vintage embroidered blocks once gifted to her by an aunt. Well, she's now 88, survived quite a bad battle of pneumonia and long hospital stay, worked on getting her strength back, and finished the quilt.
Please excuse my photos. I popped into her room today when she was at activities, and I didn't feel I should straighten and remake the bed without her being present and asking her first. I hope I have her drive, energy and persistence when I'm her age! |
How touching! I hope to be quilting at 88 too! And what I really love about your post is that she was "out at activities"! Sounds like nothing is keeping her down--good for her!
She's my hero! Hope I am still quilting at 88. Pretty top!
You go girl!
If I make it to 88, I hope I am still creating as well as she is.
She's amazing, all right.
That is so sweet!
That's terrific! The quilt is so pretty and quite a testament to her energy and creativity. Thanks for being sneaky while she was "out at activities" and snapping these pictures. :)
It just goes to show you that age is a number and it is all about attitude. Her hobbies and activities are those things that keep her "young" and going.
How precious and I hope she blesses you with it in her will.
Beautiful quilt made by a lady with go appeal.
very nicely done
I hope she is able to recover and regain her strength and keep on quilting.
what a gorgeous quilt! please tell her she is officially my quilting hero!
oh how wonderful nice quilt!!!
Fantastic!!!
What devotion to an art.
Her quilt is beautiful! So wonderful that she has her sewing machine with her and can continue to do what she loves! Sounds like she keeps busy with other activities, too. Good for her!
This is beautiful! Went to see my neighbor yesterday to swap some fabric. Her MIL moved in and took the smallest room (her wish). This gal is tiny but she was quilting on her treadle! The only machine she has ever used. She's 91 and gets around better than I do.
Neat that she is still going strong! Pretty quilt too~
Thanks for the encouraging story. The quilt turned out quite well and kudos to your aunt for getting it done. Your aunt is wise to keep being active as much as possible.

What a treasure. I have an Aunt in Texas that will be 100 on December 29th and she is 4' 9" tall. For her 99th birthday party she performed a dance for all the residents at her assisted living facility. Praying for that kind of strength

I hope I have her drive, energy and persistence when I'm her age! I have made many projects for other residents including walker bags, adult bibs, bow ties, purses and tote bags, and various Christmas decorations. I have also made some raggy quilts, 2 crib quilts for great-grandchildren, and will be starting on sewing for 2 more great-grandchildren due this year. I do have congestive heart failure and a-fib, but am determined to keep going, just slowing down when I have to. I miss my husband, but have a full life with family, friends, and various volunteer and fun activities. Life is what you make it at any age and in spite of problems! I am a happy person! |
amazing ! good for her !

Its amazing how long people live now and how well alot of them do. Last night on Martin Yin, he was in his homeland and at a place where the still do all hand embroidery, this guy is 87 and has been doing it since he was 16. He still doesn't need glasses, even to thread the needle. He had a lot of beautiful work including cutwork needle, which I only do by machine. In another town this lady was 85 and a pottery maker, she does it all day long with her grand daughter spinning the wheel while she makes the piece. She had the happiest smile on her face and Martin said she was like that all day long. I quite a while to go before I'm close thier age but would love to retire and do anything I want. I guess when you love your job its easy to keep at it. I just want to do all my hobbies and spend time with my grandkids and great grandkids. I'd be happy, oh yeah, and not have to worry about paying bills. The quilt is very pretty and happy to hear she bounced back after such an ordeal.

WOW, she's amazing, I have all I can do to move some days. I also hope to still be quilting.

How wonderful. I wish her many more years of quilting and being active.

I only hope I will reach the ages of beauty. To me the elderly have a lot to teach. I always learn something new from my elderly quilters. I think they are wonderful women and men. I help all that I can in the mobile home park where I live. Some are old and cranky, but the challenge to me is to make them smile. I take them to and fro the doctors and appointments. On my down time, I like to make them something special. My next project is form a friend of mine. She is 79 and can out do me on a daily basis. I am planning to make her a quilt. I have a lot of flowery scraps. I am going to incorporate the flowers with the batiks I have. I am thinking of the cathedral quilting putting the flowers in the center.
The elderly are great and I love them all! |
I haven't said anything in awhile!! Kudo's to her! This is a great piece!!
I sew and quilt with some ladies at a section 8 (government assisted with bills and little lower rent). Nearly everyone is over 80 and there are about 6 ladies that make bags for CASA and preemie hats for Baptist hospital and regular knitted and crocheted hats for the Cancer center. You can NOT keep the ladies of this generation down!! They have made a big queen sized quilt to auction off to buy yarn and fabric if they need it! My mom was a part of this community for many years and she moved to Arizona to live with my other sister. She is sending me 3 quilt tops to quilt! for her great grands!!! I have a long arm machine!! |
Congratulations on her finish, pretty quilt. It is a treasure!
