A salvaged quilt ready to give more huggles

A while ago I rescued. "Grandmothers Flower Quilt" that someone had gave up on. Now I use my quilts as IMO that is what they are made for, I don't make SHOW quilts. Anyway last week I noticed a really distressed and badly damaged section on this quilt, which was half machined and half hand quilted, not by an expert just someone who loves quilting, and seams were coming apart, time for an emergency operation
I did a few seams in coordinated cream thread of stepped zig zag stitch over them but this one was way needed more than that As I had a couple of samples from my Patchwork Class lessons I appliquéd a Sun Bonnet Sue's wandering thro' Grandma's garden, as I think this quilt will need ongoing attention this could become a theme, so this is what I came up with: It certainly looks strong and IMO really pretty and as, because of the way it has been painstakingly made with beautiful loving patience by someone I want it to live for a long time. Umm but is it me is Sue looking as tho' she is on a snowball |
Nice repair job! I'm with you - quilts are meant to be used.

That is awesome! I am like you, I too use my quilts. I donot have a quilt that does not get dragged around by kids, snuggled up with on the couch or keeping you warm on the bed. :)

Very cool looking

Great save!!! Using SunBonnet Sue, Perfect!!!
|
How cute is that! You did good to come up with that fix!!

Great idea!! :)

WOW you have done a terrific job repairing it and I like the idea of the sunbonnet sue addition. It does kinda look like she is standing on a snowball or maybe a stepping stone in the garden, I like that idea even better. Great job and well worth passing on. thanks for sharing.

I took a pic of the quilt laid on the bed and must admit to be rather chuffed with the result as initially I thought the Sunbonnet Sue appliqué would look odd but I think she looks rather nice in her garden.
I will make a couple more Sue's just in case as this quilt is another one the Muffin likes to rumple up into a nice bed for herself :) |
You have done a good job there. I cut one of my quilts once using a rotary cutter while trimming the edges ready for binding. I cut a clean V shape through a fold of the quilt which was underneath. My heart went into my boots, I felt sick and I stood almost motionless for minutes wondering what to do next. I thought over a cup of tea and decided all was not lost. I used fusible thin vilene which I slipped in under the top fabric, sticky side up covering the clean V cut and gently fused the edges back together. It worked a treat. Then I stitched it for security. Phew! Your idea of appliqué is a good one. Nice to read a post from the UK.

What a great idea. You saved a wonderful quilt.
|
You did a wonderful job!
|
oh so nice glad you saved it!!!
|
What a great way to save a quilt! Glad you are enjoying your quilts.
|
What neat idea, and it is so perfect in that quilt - just fabulous!!! Keep those Sunbonnet Sue's wandering through Grandmother's Garden...
|
This is great, and a great idea! I have been trying to find a solution to worn areas on a quilt my grandmother made for my first son (now 33), to have when he has a child. He dragged it around quite a bit, but this lets me do a repair without changing the quilt dramatically. Thank you!!
|
Great repair job..I use all of my quilts, too. My kid made forts and now my grandkids make forts with quilts and cardtables...such fun and lots of memories...I did the same at my grandmother's house when I was a child. Some things never seem to grow old.

What a neat idea for repairing a quilt. I gave my son and daughter-in-law a quilt and they let the dog sleep on it and of course she tried to make a nest and ended tearing it in several paces. Think I now have a solution for repair. Thanks again for the idea for repair.

Great fix for a quilt.

Nice way to salvage a quilt!
|
Terrific idea! I, too, make my quilts to "be used".
|
Good job at a rescue!
|
My first quilt was just a scrap patchwork quilt of 5 inch squares - it was actually a kit I got a Woolworth's for $1.00 back in 1975. The fabric was not the best as you can well imagine and it was all hand sewn and then tied with yarn, so the fabric gives way from time to time and I just put a patch over the seams so keep it going. It is funny looking but my daughter loves it and it covers a bed from 1860. I wish I had thought of something as cute as a Sun Bonnet Sue. She would have been so cute.

no..looks like a stepping stone in the garden////
