Sampler quilt - take 1

6 Attachment(s)
As a quilter beginner (or beginner quilter????, quilt beginner????) I've decided to make a lap quilt and learn as much as possible during the process....

Only recently I discovered that I'm doing a Sampler Quilt ... Poor blonde girl :D

all of the blocks are 10 inches finished and random color.

probably I'll use the QAYG method.....

This are the first 5 blocks

I ve all ready done a leaf block, a basket block and 3 blocks with appliqué (but no photos yet).

I want to include traditional and old quilt blocks

any suggestions ?

tks

Very nice blocks. That is a great way to learn how to make them.

Very nice blocks. Are you going to use a sashing between the blocks? I'm a bit weird, but I like to see a punch of black with white small print as sashing material when the blocks are truly a scrappy look.

You're kidding, right? You've really been quilting a long time. Those points match too well! beautiful!

Bluebonnets 08-31-2015 10:06 PM

Great blocks!

ruby2shoes 09-01-2015 01:25 AM

They're very pretty blocks and so well pieced! Lovely job!

BrendaK 09-01-2015 01:27 AM

Super blocks. Can't wait to see the finished quilt. BrendaK

Your are doing so good with the points. I had to smile because this is how I started: practising different blocks and it ended up in my very first bed quilt. Keep on the good word and have fun

Trapunta 09-01-2015 02:41 AM

It's turning out great! Don't forget to post again when you've finished.

LindaMRB 09-01-2015 04:58 AM

You are off to an amazing start and yes your points are way past beginning.
If you go to Quilters Cache they have SO many squares - some free, some requiring copyright - and many are 10" finished size. I think they also have info on how to change a square to the size you want. And you can sort by size.

Good luck and keep posting your progress!

Great blocks, and I think all beginning quilters should do a sampler to learn the different techniques. My favourite sample was Craftsy 2012 block of the month. It's free and the lessons are still available.

FabStripper 09-01-2015 09:16 AM

These blocks all look great. Your doing a real good job. Where did you get your patterns? These blocks are so nice and will make a beautiful quilt. If you think your a beginner your going to be intermediate by the time you get this done. I never worry about that. If I like a quilt I make it. If its advanced more than I ever done I'm better off for trying it.

I am a big fan of Samplers and yours is shaping up beautifully. I personally feel a Sampler is a wonderful way for a beginning quilter to be exposed to many different techniques. I started with a sampler and right after finishing it I tackled a Lone Star with set in seams, then attic windows and tumbling blocks, all with set in seams. I thank my early exposure to Sampler quilt for giving me the confidence to do any quilt pattern. You won't be afraid of anything once you complete this. Your fabrics are beautiful and you have already tackled some seriously challenging blocks, like the first one you pictured.

Click on this Google search and see if you find a block you want to make. All I can think of is Grandmother Flower garden made from hexagons, attic window, log cabin and Dresden plate.

I really like the orange star quilt block and wonder if theres a pattern somewhere for that.

NIICHMOM 09-01-2015 10:21 AM

Nice going, great job on the blocks

feline fanatic 09-01-2015 11:21 AM

I completely forgot to answer your question for suggestions on blocks. I think something with curved seams would be great to add to your repertoire. Curved seam blocks include Drunkards Path and New York Beauty. NYB is usually paper pieced to get those nice points so you may be able to tackle two new skills with one block.

Something with set in seams (aka Y seams) would also be a good addition. Blocks that include Y seams are LeMoyne Star, Attic Windows and Tumbling blocks.

you doing a great job all very nice!!!

tinliz 09-01-2015 12:16 PM

Looks like you are off to a good start. I had a difficult time with my first sampler quilt. The edges of my blocks were not straight. When I squared them up, I lost a lot of points. I finally learned from videos on Eleanor Burns videos how to get room at the edges to save my points, at least most of the time.

You are doing a great job piecing. No one would know you are a rank beginner. Keep up the good work.

roserips 09-02-2015 08:57 AM

For a beginner you have done some very difficult blocks! LindaMRB pointed out quilterscache great sight and have fun selecting the rest of your blocks. I look forward to seeing your progress as well as the finished quilt!

I'm not sure how I'm going to do it. I will do the QAYG and I'm still searching the best way to do it...

Wow your blocks are beautiful :)

Heather Hayllar 09-04-2015 04:18 AM

You are learning quickly cause these look great! I find that log cabin blocks are quick, can be made any size and I tend to show beginners half light half dark on opposite sides, you asked lol
