Samples of EB Hole in the Wall
1 Attachment(s)
About a week ago, I posted a question about what quilts could be made from fat quarters, and I must thank all who replied, for the great suggestions. One of them was Eleanor Burns Hole in the wall, and someone said that if you watched the video, you could make it from that. I watched the video, and they were so right, and I went right to work, with some scraps and made one. The only part I didn't like, was that it came out SOOOOOO BIGGGGGG, squaring up at 20 inches. So back to the graph paper, make the dimensions smaller and came up with a block that squares up at 13 inches. Much easier to square something smaller.

Beautiful blocks! I looked for that video and couldn't get it to come up. I'd love to learn to do this one.
That beige background print is sooo pretty. |
Ah, yeah, the joy of squaring up...:(
I think the small block looks great! How wide are the green strips? |
I watched it but it was long. I'm spoiled with Missouri Quilt videos that are right to the point!
I didn't realize the blocks were so big but I do remember her giving the quilt measurements I think but it didn't compute in my brain. I like your idea of making the blocks smaller. |
Looking good. I also looked for the video. Look forward to seeing your finished quilt. What you have done so far is super. BrendaK

Nice looking block.

On the smaller block, I started with a 3 1/2 inch square, adding 3 1/2 x 1 1/2 inch strips to the 2 sides, pressing, and then just did a cut and measure to finish it up. If you want more complete directions, just pm me. It really is an easy block. Mine should have been pressed better before I took the pic. Oh well.

looks good. congrats for figuring it out on your own
|
Very interesting block. Thanks for the dimensions.
|
I love to watch Eleanor burns methods. nice job on the blocks
|
I watched the video too; I didn't like all the other chatter they had going on. just wanted to get the directions for the block. I wrote down the measurements and directions as she went ; but then part way through she made mistakes. She did mention that the block measured about 15". So I guess I will have to get one made and see for sure.

That block is so nice
|
Really like the block.
|
I watched the video too and then put the block in EQ. I came out with a 15" block, like PurplePassion. You really shouldn't have much squaring up to do if the fabrics are cut to the right sizes. Is it possible that you wrote some of the dimensions down wrong? I'm going to a retreat and need a nice easy project to work on, so I'm thinking about making this one.

Yes, use that larger one on the back. Looking good.
|
I also watched her video and made a quilt, it was so big but no larger than any other quilt just the block is large
|
I think the original post had a link to an actual pattern?
|
Thanks to all for the posts and info. I agree about the chatter on the video, it was overwhelming, but then she was also working with a live audience. I never did hear her say how big the block should turn out. I thought that I had written all down right, but just 1 wrong measure will mess things up. I am happy with my smaller block, and have some material, that I have been wanting to fussy cut for something like this, so that is my plan. Thanks again, all, always so much info from all of you.

I am so glad you posed this thread... I had forgotten I had started this last November. I watch the video, took notes and them type up a tute to follow....then I watched the Vedic again to check my notes and stetches Eleanors pattern is cut from 13 fat quarters plus background fabric. My blocks are 15-1/2 unfinished, I have 11 made..wondering why I did not finished the last one...now on top of my list :).
Will be looking for your photo of your quilt and hope you enjoy making these blocks . :) Judy in Phx, AZ |
