Sashing Question re: new quilt

1 Attachment(s)
Here's the quilt on working on from striped fabrics. I will sash black between the rows. My question is...... should I use long strips width of quilt or piece them with square cornerstones (still all in black)? Hopefully the picture will come through. Thanks for your help!!

I think it would look great if the corner stones were done with some of the fabrics in your blocks, or maybe just one of the fabrics for all corner stones. Whatever you decide it is beautiful!!

joyful1 01-23-2013 04:20 AM

Whatever you do it will look great. Love the blocks you have done, great use of striped fabrics. Please post pics when finished.

Blinkokr 01-23-2013 04:25 AM

Looks great, depending on the width across, if you can I would do 1 long strip across, if not strips with corner stones
Have a Blessed day

Lovely choice of fabrics .I love all the bright colours ...I think for me it would be hard to choose which one to use for a cornerstone ...

Depends. If you are confident in keeping it aligned, a measrued long strip is good. If you worry abouf aligning, cornerstones are a useful tool.

I totally agree with this. The quilt is so geometric that you need to keep all the blocks in good alignment. If you can do it with a single strip, go ahead. I can't, so I would use cornerstones.
It's going to be stunning.

wolph33 01-23-2013 05:28 AM

wow...what a striking quilt...love it....cannot ans. your question

BeckyL 01-23-2013 06:32 AM

Your quilt is breathtaking. I think either way you do it will be fine. Use whichever method is most comfortable for you.

cuppi duke 01-23-2013 06:32 AM

I don't have a clue but I sure like it as is. Very striking quilt.

terri bb 01-23-2013 06:38 AM

Love it. Great job. Colors are outstanding.

gabeway 01-23-2013 08:05 AM

You have enough action going with the blocks so I would go with whole strips.

DebbE 01-23-2013 08:10 AM

Definitely whole strips of the black -- you can line it up properly, just use lots of pins and check, check, check often. The blocks should be the focus and with the black strips, they will be.

Tweety2911 01-23-2013 12:33 PM

Beautiful quilt! Whatever you decide will look great! Look forward to seeing how you finish it!

MTS 01-23-2013 10:29 PM

I would make smaller blocks (same way you made the larger ones - or the reverse) and use those as cornerstones....not just because you won't have the longer piece of sashing, but mainly because it would be a more interesting design overall.

Lilrain 01-24-2013 12:42 AM

Cornerstones, whether they are of a different fabric from your sashing or the same, amke it a lot easier to get the rows lined up. beautiful quilt

GailG 01-24-2013 04:10 AM

I think the solid black would be very effective, but I, personally, would do better with cornerstones (especially on such a large quilt). Cornerstones could all be of the same fabric of choice (perhaps a solid white or off-white).

Poakie 01-24-2013 04:54 AM

Wow! That's going to beautiful whichever way you do it.

dd 01-24-2013 05:04 AM

I think you have a lot going on and the plain black strips would just set it off. But if you really want to do the cornerstone to help line it up, I would only use like 3 main colors. It's usually best for the eye to use an odd amount.

jansquiltn 01-24-2013 05:14 AM

Beautiful start! I personally would use cornerstones but would make them like the center of your squares and have black as the last edge so it would be like a mini one of your blocks. I'm sure you have some leftover bits. Use them UP!!!!

wuv2quilt 01-24-2013 05:18 AM

WOW! It's beautiful!!! Can't wait to see the finished quilt. Thanks for sharing

redquilter 01-24-2013 05:25 AM

Really neat quilt. Great use of striped fabrics. I'm thinking along the lines of the others who said cornerstones might be the better choice here. Either way - it's beautiful.

Beautiful quilt. I have found that cornerstones (yes I have even done them in the same fabric as my sashing) makes it so much easier. I would totally do the cornerstones in the same black as your sashing .

BizzieLizzie 01-24-2013 07:09 AM

I love your quilt! I agree with all the ladies regarding keeping things aligned. Cornerstones will help but I wonder if it would distract from the geometric beauty of the top if it were in a different colour? Perhaps cornerstones in the same black fabric would suit better? I will be interested to see your finished quilt! It is going to look gorgeous regardless of how you finish it. You need to go with the look you want to achieve. Personally I think plain black, black corner stones or without, would look good. Thank you for sharing and allowing us the opportunity to offer you our thoughts and suggestions. :)

I vote for cornerstones with some of your bright fabric!

CherryPie 01-24-2013 02:00 PM

What a colorful quilt and the black just makes those colors pop. I know I would have to use corner stones just to keep things lined up.

Central Ohio Quilter 01-24-2013 02:37 PM

WOW!! What a fabulous quilt! That is just beautiful!

Yes. I would use cornerstones.

ube quilting 01-24-2013 04:19 PM

I wouldn't do cornerstones if they were going to be the same color as the sashing. What I think would be really really cool would be making the cornerstones just like the blocks. That would take this wonderful quilt way over the top!

@MTS: Yes!
@ jansquiltn: Also YES!

Love the quilt. Anxious to see what you do!
peace

nativetexan 01-24-2013 04:45 PM

I think skinnier black strips across would look good. it won't make matching the wider ones any easier though. great blocks!!!!

coachmatthewsvhs 01-24-2013 07:02 PM

I tried half square triangles... too big...... tried smaller, ummm.... not sure. Tried small On Point cornerstones..... like a kid in a candy store... too many choices.
THANK YOU ALL for your suggestions and observations. My policy, ..... when in doubt, wait. I'll post when I decide. I may try to FMQ this one too........ that would be a first!!

irishrose 01-24-2013 07:35 PM

I'd choose a solid or blender bright like the aqua for the cornerstones. What's your favorite color?

Dian Reno 01-25-2013 07:09 AM

Been trying to figure how u made the blocks. My ideas have lots of waste. What size block did u make. Please explain your process. I LOVE it!!!

kathy 01-25-2013 07:13 AM

I think it would look great with cornerstones like the big blocks! if that's just too much, I would do them even in black, I think it would make it all go together easier, love your quilt btw!

solstice3 01-25-2013 09:28 AM

cornerstones would look great if you are up to it. If not black alone will look great as well

Letty 01-25-2013 10:14 AM

I agee, that is such an exiting design.
