School project
3 Attachment(s)
One of my local quilting friends has a grandson in the gifted program. She asked him if his class might enjoy making a quilt as one of their programs, and the kids were intrigued. I was tasked with designing the quilt in black and gold for the school colors, and buying the fabric (the guild paid for it). We met with the kids once a week and they teamed up 2 to a machine and sewed the blocks (with LOTS of assistance).
We took them on a field trip to visit a local longarmer, and they each got to try the long arm out and sew how the quilting process takes place. Yesterday I quilted their quilt for them, and embroidered a label for it. I passed the quilt along to another helper who will bind it, then the kids (they are 12 years of age) are going to auction the quilt off for a good cause. I let the quilt guild choose the panto for the quilt, it's just a nice generic swirly pattern, although quite dense! This was a fun project! |
Wow! The class did a beautiful job! I am sure that the students will remember this experience for the rest of their lives. You, your friend and your guild have possibly inspired the next Bonny Hunter or Kaffe Fassett! Well done to all of you.

Such a great thing to do - and they must be so proud! Thank you for helping kids - so rewarding.
|

It's a beautiful quilt! and the students did a great job stitching the top. What a great group to tackle something like this the first time  ...... and for you having the patience and stamina to help them!

How sweet of you to do this with the kids! The quilt looks beautiful and I bet you had the time of your life teaching the kids and they are the lucky ones to have you to do this with. Great job!

What a wonderful project. Everyone did a super job. :)

I wish more schools did this. Its a great way to learn math, visual spatial skills, patience and team work. Also, donating or auctioning the quilt inspires community support.

Wow....what a wonderful story. I wonder how many will continue..or when they get older decide to take up the hobby. Also love the raffle idea...something they did and are proud of.
|
That is so super. Many don't realize how much math goes into a quilt. Love the beautiful label!!
|
How nice. That sure is a beauty.
|
What a great experience for those kids! Now even years from now, they won't be scared to jump into quilting. I bet you sparked several interest, but you may not know it until years from now. Too cool.
|
I've been trying to convince my son (he works at Job Corp) that some of those kids would enjoy working on a quilt but he hasn't bought into the idea yet. I think it would be wonderful!!
Your group really did a nice job on the quilt. It will certainly be a source of pride and inspiration to them! |
