Scrap jar block.

1 Attachment(s)
I am new to quilting and the few things that I have made have been pretty simple. But I love looking at the various blocks that people make and I had a look round the internet to find something that I like the look of. I found a scrap jar tutorial and thought "how hard can it be?". Well yeah, I found out how hard it can be :p My cutting for some reason is totally off which lead to some HSTs being completely wonky and some of the smaller squares being slightly more rectangular than square. But overall i'm happy with what I managed to make. And we all know that practice makes perfect :D

Edit: I've just noticed that the piecing on the outer corners is wrong too. Oh well, just as well its not going into a quilt!

Not so bad for a newbie. Just keep practicing & soon you will be doing it perfect! I really like the colors & fabrics in your block & you are being kinda hard on yourself because it doesn't look all that wonky to me!

ManiacQuilter2 07-25-2014 04:11 AM

I don't see much wonky and maybe with a little starch and pressing you can get it under control. A suggestion is to make flying geese units for the star points on all four sides. That would eliminate the four center seams. Any seam that is purged from a quilt is that much less bulk. I think you did a great job. I don't know the size of the block but you could make a placemat or something else from this block. We have ALL learn from our mistakes.

This is a very pretty block. Keep up the enthusiasm! Imagine a whole quilt made of these blocks.

ptquilts 07-25-2014 04:24 AM

I love anything scrappy and your block looks like it will be a great quilt!

QuiltnNan 07-25-2014 04:25 AM

it looks great to me. and, yes, practice is a good thing

Grandma Bonnie 07-25-2014 04:43 AM

I think it looks great - especially for a newbie! There were a lot of seams to match up in this block and they all match well as do the points! I would certainly use it in something - a table topper or something like that!

toverly 07-25-2014 04:48 AM

Very nice! Just look at it as a practice block. I almost always toss the first one. But I really don't see any flaws in your block, a simple press and it will look great! It would be a beautiful quilt.

Tartan 07-25-2014 04:48 AM

Very nice job indeed! The star points are all 1/4 inch in from the edge so they won't disappear when you sew the blocks together. Give yourself a pat on the back and use it in a table topper/runner or continue with more for a quilt.

gabeway 07-25-2014 04:54 AM

I like it! Challenging start!

quiltsRfun 07-25-2014 05:19 AM

Looks good to me. Live those colors.

mim 07-25-2014 05:49 AM

You did a great job with a block that isn't easy-peasy. Everything lines up. If you worry about the corner pieces being too small -- make them oversized and trim afterwards. Remember half (or more) of a quilting lesson is how to correct a problem when you make an error
Mim

tessagin 07-25-2014 05:58 AM

I think it looks fine and just remember practice makes perfect. No quilt police here!

scrapatches 07-25-2014 06:26 AM

Nice block! I think you are on a fast learning curve and just need to make a few more blocks. I have made these blocks and they are fun but challenging. It looks like you have nested your seams well according to the tutorial. Your seams look great! The corner is fine. I would not have seen it at all if you had not mentioned it. Did you square and trim your HSTs? This is one of the things I continue to "live and learn" ... :) Pat

cjsews 07-25-2014 06:30 AM

Very nice for a newbie. I may have to put tis on my to-do list. I really like your fabric choices.

pojo 07-25-2014 06:33 AM

i love the colors and the block
well done

SheriR 07-25-2014 07:32 AM

I really like your block too. Just think, if you practice 11 more times like this you'll have a nice Practice Throw. :D

Baloonatic 07-25-2014 07:33 AM

I think it looks great, especially for a new quilter!!! A like the corners,
you'll have a little 4-patch when you put the blocks together.

Jeanne S 07-25-2014 07:36 AM

Looks great to me!!!

calla 07-25-2014 07:45 AM

Your too hard on yourself, one colors.....calla

fxsts93kf 07-25-2014 08:29 AM

Very pretty block! I can't see anything wrong with it at all!

PenniF 07-25-2014 08:33 AM

I love this block.....and if i were you i'd put it in a quilt !!!!

Fifee 07-25-2014 09:01 AM

Thanks for all the lovely replies. I knew I had when cutting the HSTs that I had somehow managed to cut them wrongly but fabric is precious and since I wasnt doing anything special with this block I used them anyway. I think I might just make this into a dinner place mat, its 12" square so will fit a plate nicely and I have other scraps I can use to make a couple more, so thanks for the ideas folks :)

Pennyhal 07-25-2014 10:08 AM

Gosh, it looks just like mine look! Press with a little starch and carry on!

QM 07-25-2014 10:21 AM

what a challenge! Good for you.

Doggramma 07-25-2014 10:30 AM

Your block is pretty! It looks good. I still have those issues of things getting wonky and not being even around the edges of the block, especially with HST pieces. Even when my blocks aren't the greatest, they still get sewn together and the wonkiness can be quilted out. I think you're doing great!

tammyg 07-25-2014 12:34 PM

I love this block.... stars and the scrappy look are my favorites........

BrendaK 07-25-2014 12:51 PM

Looks good to me. Lovely colors. You are doing great. BrendaK

JuneBillie 07-25-2014 01:52 PM

What a pretty block you made. I like the idea of using it for one place mat, and then making some more. Great Job!

Micki922 07-25-2014 02:27 PM

It looks good. Keep practicing.

ube quilting 07-25-2014 02:46 PM

Your block is actually very pretty and rather a challenge for a beginner. IMHO, I think you did quite well on this block and would keep making a few of these. There are lots of techniques in it to practice. Keep this block, put a date on it and in a few months you can take a look at it and see how much you have improved your piecing.

I like your block!
peace

Ditto! I've been working on this block for 3 days and I still keep cutting off my points.

redquilter 07-25-2014 03:07 PM

This was a tough block. Lots of seams to match up but I think you did a really nice job. I like the colors/fabrics.

BETTY62 07-25-2014 05:11 PM

I think you did an awesome job on your block. Keep up the good work and happy quilting!

nannyrick 07-25-2014 05:38 PM

I think that you have done a great job for just starting out. Keep up the good work

Sew Freak 07-26-2014 03:17 AM

not bad for a newbie....BTW....we've all 'been there'!

ArtsyOne 07-26-2014 03:21 AM

You have a beautiful stash of fabric! I've been quilting for 40 years and I still sometimes get the same result as you have with the outside corners with no idea how they got that way. For a newbie, you've done an enviable job with a difficult block.

Clarice29 07-26-2014 03:26 AM

Nice block. Keep practicing, you're doing fine.

GloriaC 07-26-2014 03:26 AM

I'm with you Polly C. I think it looks great.

IshtarsMom 07-26-2014 04:51 AM

Got a drawer full of "auditions"..Think you are smart to analyze your work...if we don't how do we ever get better...Do wish I had written myself notes and pinned to each.
