Scrap Quilts - Beginning - Inspired by Quilting Board!

3 Attachment(s)
Good morning! A couple years ago, I didn't think I was a big fan of scrap quilts. But, I have seen so many wonderful versions here on the Quilting Board, that I got inspired!

I began two scrap quilts yesterday, for the first time ever, and thought I'd show my progress. Thank you QB members for all the wonderful inspiration!

Assuming I loaded the photos in the order expected......
- The first photo is a string quilt using phone book pages for piecing. (I quickly learned I need to use dark fabric immediately surrounding the center yellow strip if I want the yellow strip to be noticed in all the blocks. I also decided I need to leave the paper on, at least until I've sewn all the blocks together so the block size doesn't shrink/change.)
- The second photo is of a quilt that is going to be a combination of 16 patches and 4 patches.
- The third photo is a closeup of two finished blocks.

My piecing (i.e., exact/correctly sized 1/4" seams) leaves something to be desired, but I think the overall effect will work!

Looking good!
And each quilt is a learning experience too, even long after we are no longer new at it.

DebraK 10-29-2013 04:29 AM

good for you! I think you'll find it very satisfying to make something beautiful out of all those bits and pieces. You paid good money for the fabric, you might as well use it up. You picked a couple of great patterns to start with. What's nice is that it is something you can do in between other quilts so the supply of scraps is ever changing.

Tartan 10-29-2013 04:45 AM

I love scrap quilts! You have a good start with your blocks.

BrendaK 10-29-2013 04:50 AM

Good going. I also wasn't a big fan of scrap quilts until the board. Now I am on my second one. Good luck to you. BrendaK

Beautiful colors!!!

Jingle 10-29-2013 10:07 AM

Your are off to a great start.
I too am in the process of using up my scraps. An almost impossible feat. They seem to just keep growing.
I made ten scrappy quilts last year ans so far this year I have made three, working on the fourth. Hard telling how many more I will get out of just older scraps.

Tweety2911 10-29-2013 12:50 PM

Beautiful colors in your scraps! Love what you have done so far.

You certainly are off to a great start.....so colorful!! I love, love, love scrappy quilts! And, I think my favorite pattern for them is the string quilt. You can arrange them in soooo many different ways!! Keep up the good work.

be sure to check out "quiltville.com" Bonnie Hunter has a great tut on leaders and enders so you can be making your second scrap quilt while you are making something else. I have been doing leaders and enders now and I'm on my third scrap quilt of 2" squares. One is an Irish Chain that is now quilted and in my cottage in Flagstaff, AZ (summer place) and the other needs to be quilted. I think this 3rd one is going to be "patches and pinwheels".

They are going to be wonderful, can't wait to see them finished.

sustraley 10-30-2013 03:41 AM

I too found out I like scrap quilts after participating in swaps and putting some of those pieces together. Another thing I have found is that it may not be your favorite or you may think you did not piece it well. But when it is all together and quilted, it may become one of your favorites. Scrappy quilts can be fun to do. Can't wait to see the finished projects.

Very pretty! I love scrap quilts, and I like making strip quilts. Hope you will show us the finished product!

carolynjo 10-30-2013 05:03 AM

Yes, scrap quilts are really fun! Good start on yours.

Thank you everyone for the nice comments. I do plan to share the final products!

Regarding Bonnie Hunter's website..... I also became aware of her website and leader/ender process from the Quilting Board. I am currently making these two quilts at the same time. The one with the 2" squares are my leaders/enders to the string quilt. It's going much faster than it would have otherwise!

bibi 10-30-2013 05:16 AM

Great going.

Andrea 10-30-2013 06:25 AM

I warn you! Scrap quilts are addicting! Can't tell you how many I've made. Although I always generated quite a few scraps on my own, many of my fellow guild members began bringing their scraps to me. They jokingly call me "The Queen of Scraps." Have fun.

Jordan 10-30-2013 06:51 AM

Great start. It is quite easy to get hooked on scrap quilt isn't it!

Wanabee Quiltin 10-30-2013 08:33 AM

You're on your way to becoming a 'scrap artist'. Great looking so far, keep it up.

Annie68 10-30-2013 08:49 AM

Scraps are my favorite, great start.

tessagin 10-30-2013 08:59 AM

They're all going to be great when you're finished. What I like about the strip piecing (the top one), is it creates an illusion. Almost has a mirrored effect like beveled.

oldtnquiltinglady 10-30-2013 09:05 AM

Wonderful work. I too have found scrap quilt pictures here on the board and have taken the idea out of my sewing room and so far have made two beautiful quilts. If I ever stop piecing long enough, I am going to learn to post pictures so everyone can see that I am really serious about my quilting......

Yours is the third one that I will be making soon. I forgot the other two that I got ideas from, but to all of you, thanks a million.

Auntie Em 10-30-2013 11:36 AM

It is always so much fun to build quilts!!! Great job!!!

Debbie B 10-30-2013 11:53 AM

I love scrap quilts & yours are going to be pretty. I've never heard of using the phone book for paper piecing. How do you like it? And it doesn't leave ink?

MargeD 10-30-2013 01:32 PM

It's always nice to try something new and scrap quilts often take us out of our comfort zone.

Wildernessties 10-30-2013 01:53 PM

Love your choices and I LOVE scrappy quilts! In fact, I just started some string blobks and may place them just the same way as you did. Nice work.

It's my first time using the phone book pages and it's working great! I made my stitches smaller than usual, and it perforated the paper so that it can be removed easily! The paper is thin, so it tears very easily. I know some people leave the paper in the quilt and let it dissolve in the wash when done. But, I decided to remove it before quilting due to the concern you expressed about the black ink and light colored fabrics. There is no ink on the quilt using this method. I learned about the phone book pages from the Quilting Board too. A wealth of knowledge!

chezstitches 10-30-2013 06:16 PM

nothing better than scrap quilts! Keep going!!

zozee 10-30-2013 06:24 PM

Yay for scrappies! I wasn't a fan, either, before coming here. It's fun to play with scraps and enjoy purposefully using those fun bits and pieces.

Quilter Day-by-Day 10-31-2013 04:30 AM

Scrappy is my favorite. Looking good.

purplefiend 10-31-2013 01:14 PM

I love making scrap quilts, currently working on a String Star quilt.

Here's a short video of me sewing some of the blocks. I'm using a 1914 Singer 115 treadle.
