Scrappy Binding Happy Dance
 

In my quilting ignorance I thought a scrappy binding was made by sewing the short ends of 2.5 inch
wide scrap strips together until you got to the required length.

Then I came across Nancy Zieman’s method and gave that a try. It was fun to make and I’m very happy with the finished result. Unfortunately no matter how much juggling I did I still ended up making one of the mitred corners with a seam in it. The fabrics I used were the patterned scraps from the quilt fabric and bright, plain jellyroll strips from my stash.

That offset strip method you linked is what I use for my pieced bindings.

No matter how hard I try I end up with seams in/near/next to my miters. I just avoid one on my first corner and go from there. In my defense, I did spend a couple of decades laying out the binding all around first before giving up.

We were chatting about this some on Tuesday in my small group. I have a seam line about 1/16" of an inch from my miter. I just laughed. Two of the other ladies said that they would have pieced in a larger piece and I can see how that would be nicer.

Thanks Moira! I'm constantly amazed, and thankful by the wealth of information available here. I, too, was piecing small scraps. This method is much better, faster, and will give me better results.

Lovely! I did a scrappy border with 2.5 x 5" rectangles. I had so many left over after the quilt top was done. But I just sewed them end to end, small stitches in the seam. Then I put the binding on like any other binding. It looked almost as cute as yours!
