Scrappy star using dryer sheets
2 Attachment(s)
A couple of weeks ago, I posted a few blocks of scrappy stars, asking advice about using dryer sheets for the scraps to be sewn onto. Comments, pro & con, were made about using them, and so I continued making the blocks, as they were used sheets and enough said that after washing them, they had no problem with the fragrance. I got all the blocks sewn together and just have to post it. I will be adding borders, to make it more queen size. It is pictured on a king bed, so size is about 55x77
Just a closer up picture. I was going to use sashing between the blocks, but it was suggested to not do that. I am so glad I didn't. |
I am so glad to hear the dryer sheets worked. I am getting ready to do my first pp and I will use the dryer sheets now. I have an abundance of them saved up. Such an inexpensive way to do pp.

looks great so far

oooh, I love that yellow background.
|
That turned out so pretty! It looks good without sashing

Beautiful quilt! Did you mark your dryer sheets to get a consistent sewing line? If yes, I am guessing you just used a pen and ruler and marked them by hand??
|
Wow this is beautiful! Can you share how you did this? I'm not sure how dryer sheets helped you but am so curious. Thank you for putting this beautiful quilt in my head. I have some scraps that will be great for this I think. Did you use a special ruler for the yellow center?

Glad the dryer sheets worked out for you. I used some when I was making a Sunbonnet Sue quilt. Worked like a charm and kept them out of the landfill.

Oh, Spartan, I love the way it finished. The scrappy diamonds are so perfect with the yellow centers. They flow into each other and my eye just roams around the top, seeing all the great fabrics. Some look like tumbling blocks and others have a twist like a winding road. I enjoy looking at this beauty. You have something fabulous here. Love, love love it!:D

interesting pattern -- where was your inspiration for that pattern? don't think i have seen that particular one before? i've seen other scrappies similar....but the positioning of the scraps is different...

This would be a Spider Web pattern if you worked the strips only to the point of the kite and turn the points to set north-south-east -west. This pattern has the strips extended so the star floats and does not connect to the other stars. A neat variation. Am I seeing it as an altered state of spider web,or not?:D peace |
wow, your quilt came out great!

I didnt pp, I squared the dryer sheet, used water soluble glue stick, to attach star in corner and just sewed narrow strips at random. That way when I sewed the blocks together I didn't have all the seams at the same places. The yellow piece is shaped like a kite

I can't really say where the idea came from. I had the kite idea, probably from the periwinkle pattern, but all these strips of scraps, so I just started playing with 2 blocks and liked how they came out. Problem is that I still have a lot of scraps left. Must dream up something else now. Thanks to all for the great comments

The yellow is a great background color. Nice work!

your quilt is fabulous!!! i am so glad that you continued on and finished it. i didn't comment on your post about dryer sheets, tho i have used them for years. i put them in a mesh laundry bag and launder on gentle, press flat and use. after washing, the smell almost gone, then wash quilt...no smell.

Wow the stars are so bright and pretty!
|
Very cool....I love the yellow too, nice and happy.

That is such an interesting design. Can't wait till it is finished with the borders. Good job.

Love how the yellow background fabric makes your blocks pop. Can't wait to see your finished product. Very, very nice.
|
Love your scrappy quilt. Can't wait to try it.......................someday LOL
|
Nicely done
|
Do you remove the dryer sheets at some point??? If so, how difficult is it. What is the name of the pattern? Looks like
a lot of fun to make, and the result is outstanding. |
It looks great!

Looks a lot like Bonnie Hunter's Spider web. She did one called a Serpentine. Just a matter of how you place/arrange the blocks. Looks great!!

i sort of adjusted the periwinkle pattern and, no, I did not remove the sheets. I used school glue to set the yellow kite into the corner on the 6 1/4 square of dryer sheet, and then just sewed 3/4 to 1 1/4 inch strips alternating sides then squared at 6 inches. On the periwinkle quilt, which is pp, the kite is set into the point of the triangle, thus ending up with a spider effect. Hope that makes an understandable explanation

I'm glad the dryer sheets worked for you, great way to recycle and your quilt is beautiful.
|
The yellow really ties all the other colors together, love it!!!
|
Looks really nice! I've had this type (star) in mind for a while -- just need to do it. Hope it turns out as well as yours did!
|
Very pretty! Love the scrappy
