Scrappy quilts tend to look aweful unless the maker has used at least a base level of colour principles to match their colours.
Whatever way you're happy with though, only you have to like your creations ;) |
Love your quilt blocks. I love jewel tones on a black background.
I guess I am kind of a combination. I pick a bunch of colors I like, cut the shapes I need--say squares. Then I can randomly put the squares together to make my blocks. Then I lay them out and play with them until I am happy with what I have. |
I like your blocks - very nice
I have that same - need - to have "controlled" scrappy - I just can't bring myself to put any old thing together It takes me much longer to put something "scrappy" together than the other types of piecing I also agonize and rearrange and rearrange and rearrange and get some other fabrics out to make it look better to my eyes |
I think you're right to consider how colors fit together, even in a scrappy quilt. I have seen some ugly, and I do mean ugly, quilts from scraps because no planning was done. Then those same scraps become jewels when someone takes them and plans out color placement. Just because scraps are being used no need to make trash.

I hear you all too well. That's why I need instructions, lol. I understand the OCD thing.

Maybe it is just me, but that looks like a chocolate brown background and it is just Fabulous. Never would have thought of using that color, but wow does it look great. Now if it is just me and that is black, it is still just as gorgeous, but I am going to add chocolate brown background to my list.

love those bright beautiful colors.... :D
|
I'm the same way with "scrappy"...I place them, photo them, rearrange them, photo them, etc....then I download to my computer and agonize over "which one" goes better :) :) :)
After hair pulling, screaming and jags of laughter--I decide...but at least then, I know it matches (LMBO) |
My goodness! What a beautiful quilt!!!!!! I love scrappies and would love to do one in this pattern! What is it called?

wow, I would say your colors are in all the right places, suzi! :D

well! Finally! A group of control freaks I can have some fun with! LOL
I have control issues, and whenever I am working with someone else, I explain that it is about the only self-discipline I ever consistently practice, and I am not sure I should give it up! <g> ANyway, one of my sewing buddies (we sew together once a week, every week, for five or more hours at a time) is a very relaxed person who makes MARVELOUS scrappy quilts ... they are just beautiful! SO, of course! She wants to heal me! After many weeks, we were going through different kits we had laying around the Post (the product of a control issue person cutting the same pieces for HOURS on end, with no real urge to stop - - are you getting the picture? LOL) I finally grabbed a kit which was a friendship star, with ribbons running together .. at least, that is the basic plan. I made up my mind that I was ABSOLUTELY going to grab a HST and put it together with the next piece and NOT think about what any of it was .... I went so far as to throw every HST on to the table, and absolutely unmatch them! Got the kit home, and DD came and asked me if I had a quilt already cut out so she and grandboy could do some sewing over summer vacation ... and, the FIRST thing she did was start SORTING all the HST back into the original, MATCHING HST ...   she seems like such a relaxed little thing, you know? but ... I guess she isn't ... as I grit my teeth and say: SOME DAY I WILL MAKE A SCRAPPY QUILT! LOL ... I think it is because so often, we pick up a book saying: Use all your scraps .... and the pictures they show are so planned, I hurt! maybe our scrappy expectations aren't the reality? LOL |
I hear ya, omak. I so envy the scrappers. And I m NOT a neat freak. If you'd see my sewing room and other areas of my house your would see I'm not. But just relaxing with scraps drives me bananas.

I have yet to attempt a scrappy quilt, still don't have enough stash. I have seen them with lots of different colors but the quilter usually has some matching colors in them, like lines of darks or lights. I agree with Eddie, I like jelly rolls and layer cakes for the same reason, someone else made the choice for me.

Beautiful.

Your scrappy is looking great.
I too, have a problem with scrappy! I over think them. I guess I like the organized scrappy!! I like other peoples...just not my own.  |
