I make a scrappy quilt, but cannot just grab any color. It has to go with the rest, I have to "make sure" the colors are in the right place. It's an OCD thing I'm sure, perfectionist problem definitely. Anyone else have this problem?? The pictures don't really capture the colors, I think it's the lighting in my sewing room.

Yeah, that's why I like the layer cake, jelly roll, charm, etc., collections so much - someone has already determined what looks right together for me.

BTW, love your selections!

2wheelwoman 07-17-2009 10:59 AM

Love the beautiful vibrant colors on the dark background. And, you're not alone - I can't just "grab" a piece either. I grab it, then agonize over it, and usually dig around and grab a different one. I wish I could let go and not worry about it so much, but I am who I am.

Iluv2quilt 07-17-2009 11:01 AM

And I probably will change the placement of the blocks several more times as I get added material. lol.

barnbum 07-17-2009 11:05 AM

Oh gosh that's beautiful!! And you're not alone in the scrappy issue. Everything I do that looks random is oh so very planned. I'm doing a scrappy watercolor log cabin now--and every strip is chosen carefully. My husband's scrappy CW quilt was very very carefully done.

An artist friend of mine said random color is the hardest kind--getting it to look just so. Don't we know it!

CajunQuilter2 07-17-2009 11:06 AM

    I am the same way. My friend and I each made a quilt from our combined stash. It is scrappy & she instructed me not to match, to just grab. Weeellllll, I did okay on some of the blocks but on others I just COULD NOT do it!!!

kluedesigns 07-17-2009 11:12 AM

OMG!!

i can't even do scrappy because of it and i don't like those style of quilts because of it.

PamH 07-17-2009 11:15 AM

Very pretty... i end up matching mine also.

I have been tempted in making a brown bag quilt. What ever you pull out of the bag must be sewed next. Just not sure if i can make my self do it.

billswife99 07-17-2009 11:17 AM

Same way here too, I love the look of scrappy but I analyze it and that takes away from the fun.

This one is gorgeous! Is that a black background with batiks? Beautiful!

Iluv2quilt 07-17-2009 11:22 AM

It is a black background - some of the colors are batik, some are not, all from my stash tho.

Boston1954 07-17-2009 11:37 AM

You are NOT alone. I like things to match too. I cannot just throw stuff together and hope for the best. I feel like I am wasting my fabric.

quiltykitty 07-17-2009 11:38 AM

Yeah, I'm sort of like that about color. Things just have to be right or I don't like it. And if I don't like itm probably won't finish it either.

Love your colors, BTW

quiltluvr 07-17-2009 11:40 AM

It's like wanting to wear makeup that gives you the "natural" look and ONLY takes two hours to get it looking that way.

I watch my placement too. I'm always thinking there's some loud fabric that will just be blaring "get me outta here, I don't belong" and ruin the rest.

OTOH, I've seen pics of some really awesome scrappy quilts that blend so nicely with countless prints, florals, novelties, plaids, geometric, and so forth and just the right balance of contrast. That's what I aspire to.

You're doing a great job on your selection and placement. Looking forward to seeing more as it progresses.

Shemjo 07-17-2009 12:20 PM

Keep thinking I will do a "real scrappy", but I never seem to have the "right" fabrics to let myself go! :?

charmpacksplus 07-17-2009 12:28 PM

Everytime I see a quilt that is truly scrappy, I want to change a few of the blocks around. Too much red here or too many stripes there. I like controlled scrappy

Iluv2quilt 07-17-2009 12:43 PM

Me too - just looking at these pictures makes me want to move things around - again!

MadQuilter 07-17-2009 12:48 PM

Yep - I'm an "organized scrapper" as well. Am losening up though. Your colors are great. If scrappy was your goal, you did a great job!

Jennifer 07-17-2009 01:14 PM

I love the colors. I try scrappy, but its more of an organized scrappy. I sometimes suffer from headaches because of this. That's when you know that you are overthinking it!

sewaholic 07-17-2009 02:03 PM

Yep I love scrap quilts but I can't just pick up and sew either. I have to fiddle around till it pleases me. Guess it defeats the whole purpose of a scrap quilt, but unless I am happy it wont get finished.

sewaholic 07-17-2009 02:04 PM

Forgot to tell you - Your quilt looks great.

Iluv2quilt 07-17-2009 02:16 PM

Thank you all - the quilt is meant to be scrappy looking (all the right pieces in all the right places) lol. But I'm actually having fun with it, can't really mess it up right? :-)

dunster 07-17-2009 04:17 PM

I guess I am the only one so far who can be truly scrappy. I've just started quilting a log cabin made with scraps - will post when it's done. I used everything that I had, and didn't pay any attention whatsoever to what went where (except for light and dark, of course). I did the back with scraps too - bigger pieces but with no particular care for matching anything.

Yes, I have to like the colors mix before I can place it there. :D

Your quilt looks great!

sewnsewer2 07-17-2009 05:06 PM

Wow that is really stunning with the black! I'm the same way, it has to 'go with' the others.

I have the same problem; but, I found away my guild did a project where we put all our pices in a brown papper bag. And whan came out went into the quilt. Here is the quilt I did.

littlehud 07-17-2009 06:05 PM

I agree. I do the same thing, but it has worked very will with your quilt. I love it.

amma 07-17-2009 08:57 PM

I love it!!! Those are some bright cheery fabrics!!! :D :D :D
I have a hard time with scrappy...if it is all scraps and no other fabrics I can do it...but give me a few pieces of fabric to frame the blocks or for borders...and I want to start matching things up
Maybe there is a support group somewhere for people like us???

gcathie 07-17-2009 09:09 PM

very nice indeed......I do the sme thing I have to display all the pieces and then mark them so I don't get them turned around....:-)......all in the eye of the beholder....:-)

Pats8e8 07-17-2009 09:24 PM

Your's looks gorgeous. I made a scrappy one, has a foundation back and then strips on top. It is ugly! I added a big denim border and turned it into a beach quilt. Won't be on any bed in this house! I like coordinated fabrics and colors, I'm more traditional I guess, or old. ha

Ninnie 07-17-2009 09:30 PM

Scrappy quilts are traditional. The key is to work in values and not in colors, Say a pattern calls for 10 dark, 10 medium, and 10 light. you choose your material by that.
the storm at sea is a great quilt to do this way, and you don't notice the colors individually. The only thing is you have to like the material to begin with.
I on the other hand, can't make my self make a quilt with only 2 or 3 colors, just can't get into them! LOL
I love your quilt , it is striking!

zyxquilts 07-17-2009 11:22 PM

Don't feel bad! One of my friends, who has been quilting for over 30 years just made her first 'brown bag' scrappy quilt! It was a gift from another friend (a kit) & she said it was one of the hardest things she's ever done. She is normally a very "matchy-matchy" kind of quilter & she really did just reach in the bag & use the first one she grabbed...it came out great!!! :D

patricej 07-18-2009 12:20 AM

i'm so happy to find i'm not alone in having this problem. i've tried several times to go scrappy and just let the "chips" fall where they may. HAH!!! Fat Chance!

we should start a support group. Scrap-Challenged Anonymous

Kyiav10 07-18-2009 03:02 AM

Beautiful!!

Kyia

lovetoquilt 07-18-2009 04:02 AM

I am the same way. With my tie quilt I tried to put color families together. I moved them around a lot and after I took the pictures I saw a few I still wanted to move, but couldn't.

Bevanger 07-18-2009 04:23 AM

fantastic job..... i love all the pretty colors.....

sewjoyce 07-18-2009 05:58 AM

The quilt is just gonna be gorgeous! I haven't tried a "scrappy" quilt yet -- but using one color all the way through it looks really nice and is just a bit more controlled....

johnette 07-19-2009 04:53 AM

It's beaautiful. I love the pattern. What is the name of it? I haven't been able to bring myself to go scrappy yet...maybe someday.

Iluv2quilt 07-20-2009 07:07 AM

Thank you all so much for "confessing" lol. I'm getting better as the quilt goes on, I just keep adding new colors and dispersing them throughout the quilt - it's been a lot of fun so far. Didn't realize I had so many colors that pop!

Iluv2quilt 07-20-2009 07:09 AM

The name of the pattern is Jewel Box.

Jim's Gem 07-20-2009 08:48 AM

It's beautiful. I confess, my scrappy is slightly planned as well. I can't just grab any color, I have to make sure that no two pieces of fabric the same color are next to each other.
Love you quilt so far!!!
