Scraps and Graph Paper

1 Attachment(s)
I couldn't bear to toss batik scraps so, using my son't leftover Quad Graph Paper, I cut them down to size.

Oh my, that's tiny but beautiful!

My favorite fabrics are batiks. You did a wonderful job.

Thanks y'all. They are all batik scraps. The finished size is 18 x 23. The actual blocks finish at 2 1/2 inches. I was trying to cut my scrap stash down to 2 inch squares and had many triangles that were not big enough to get a square but too good to toss. Now I am throwing away only little bits. I am thinking about getting it framed. Too many people think it's a placemat.

oksewglad 11-19-2013 10:41 AM

Now that's my kind of quilt! I too make quilts from little pieces. It takes a while to sew these blocks and yes "It's not a placemat"! This is a picture of one I donated to the local hospital auction with only a third of the blocks you have made. Making this size is really appreciated as a donation quilt and people will spend $ on it over a table mat or wall hanging the same size but from larger pieces. It appeals to quilters who do not work with this size. This one earned $110. http://www.quiltingboard.com/attachm...664198-023.jpg

Kudos to you and your sunny quilt!

QUILTNMO 11-19-2013 12:16 PM

very pretty!!!!

Wow oksewglad, that is beautiful. I think I am hooked on them now. It's so nice to complete a project without having to run to the LQS for a back or batting. Fabric goes a long long way.

Diane007 11-19-2013 02:08 PM

very pretty...

How did you quilt this?

Thanks and congratulations on being hooked! I just finished the center of a simple rail fence using 1" scraps that I'm making for a holiday gift exchange. Keep at it and look forward to seeing some more of your beauties.

Well, I kind of copped out a little on the quilting. I used invisible thread and went between the blocks, stitching in the ditch. They are only 2 1/2 inches apart. The pieces look so much like pleating that I didn't want to distract from the pleated look. I am now working on one that is 5 blocks per inch, it is going to be similar to this one. Since I paper piece, I am even considering not ripping out the paper on the next one, what did you do? I figure it will help stabilize it even more to leave it in. Afterall, there are "old" quilts with newspaper still in them. Just thinking about that as I sew.

I don't call that copping out! I feel the piecework should be the showcase of these small things and yes I often do as you have done with the clear thread and SITD. On this LC I used the serpentine (3 pt zigzag) stitch set at 2 (width) and 2 (length) on my Bernina and stitched with a variegated thread down the diagonal of the blocks and carried this diagonal line out into the borders.
I must confess--I very seldom PP as I don't like to rip out the papers. I just cut my fabrics the size needed. There is no reason why the papers have to come out. Some have printed patterns onto a light weight interfacing so there is no need to take it out. We do what is easiest :)

Jingle 11-20-2013 08:36 AM

Both of the little quilts are beautiful. I'm trying to use up my scraps, doubt I will worry about using up scraps that small. I have large yardage amounts of fabrics I am anxious to use up also.
