I saw Anna's avatar a while ago and fell in love with it! Apparently it's from a pattern in a book but as it was only log cabins, I thought I could work something out in EQ. What do you all think? Apart from the seahorses, there are fish swimming up and down vertically between the seahorses, can you all see them? :-D

Very cool - love the colors, too.

sparkys_mom 07-19-2011 02:38 AM

Yes. I see the fish - love the seahorses.

piepatch 07-19-2011 02:40 AM

Yes, I see the seahorses and the fish. Very clever, and very pretty! I love the colors.

I was looking at the work of Escher ages ago and wanting to do a tessellating design - I guess now I've found one! His seahorses are far more organic and tessellate into other seahorses - that would have to be done with applique but I like this version! I've been googling around and there seem to be quilt patterns out there called 'Tessellating Seahorses' in books by both Karen Bolestra and Barbara Schaffield but I can't find images of them. I don't think I'm breaching anyone's copyright as a) log cabin is a public domain block and b) I've only taken an idea and created my own design - there's no copyright in ideas - I don't think I'm treading on toes... at least, I hope not!

It was unintentional - I was only aiming for seahorses - the fish were a happy bonus! Now there's honesty for you.

Interesting .... very interesting mix ..... colors of ocean waves ....
One to ponder ...
Good job. Thanks for sharing .... How big is it?

CorneliaVa 07-19-2011 04:00 AM

Seahorses are super .... still see the wave action, but my eyes still haven't adjusted to the "fish" part .... maybe that's what I am seeing as wave action ...

Wave action works, too. A multi-purpose design! :D

The blocks are 6" at the moment and 8 x 6 so 48" x 36" but it would have to have borders... I haven't settled on a block size yet though. I'm thinking applique fish and or seahorses swimming round the border or possible a plain border and then do those in FMQ with beads for detail. :-D

hcarpanini 07-19-2011 04:16 AM

Unique!

The fish are grey and vertical. Every other one shares the seahorse's eyes. The others are eyeless - perhaps I'll do these in beads? I LOVE beads! :-D

Thanks! When I look at your avatar again, I can just make out that the seahorses are tessellated by staggering them, hmmmm, got me thinking! Still, I DO like my serendipitous fish. :-D
